1.
Do I smell GAS?
Quite possibly but I dont have the cash!
2.
Was that 'Notes' rehearsal rooms?
It was 'Sound Inc'...
3. I checked for any blown drivers....I thought it was odd myself. Nothing a miss. Simply put...a 4x10 (even 8 ohms) can get VERY loud. Even in the bands I play in.
4.
should be a noticable increase in volume, did you try doing that in a band setting?
It was the band rehearsing, and to be honest, the levels are pretty much as we do them all the time. Not ridiculous, but I wear ear protection. There was a difference, just not HUGE. I did try it with/without ear protection as well.
5.
Using just one cab the amp (set at the same volume) will put out a little more in that cab than having to split the signal in two cabs (the same way we say a amp is 180W@8ohm / 300W@4ohm for full power... don't know the techs on this... but i think you get my point). Adding to this you used the bottom cab alone who benefits of floor coupling. So, if we see this in perspective we have two situations: A - Both cabs running - each will recieve less signal than a single one. B - Bottom cab running solo - the cab will recieve an increase in signal and the floor coupling will increase in the same progression thus giving the feeling of having almost the same volume of two cabs. You may find interesting next time you're in a reharsal to try with the top cab running solo. I believe you'll then notice a big drop in volume. Try to A-B all the possibilities (two cabs vs top cab vs bottom cab) if you find the time and post your results. It'll be an interesting expirience and we'll all learn something mores about cab placement and coupling Cheers edit: correction of my portuglish...
Cool, good idea. Next time, top cab only. I actually realised how much I quite like 4x10s. Id love a Berg/Genz/Aguilar 4x10.
6. Im never in the right part of the country....EVER!
7. For the record, back in the day I didnt like sunburst. I used to like black and natural. Owning a white bass for 16 years meant the colour grew on me, and now I LOVE it. After seeing a few Precisions in sunburst, and Kurt Cobain with a sunburst Fender guitar of some sort, I fell for sunburst. A classic IMO. Black? I now avoid it for some reason.
8.
110% correct
YES!
9.
Probably a case of the head not being powerful enough to give any real volume increase when its output was split between the two cabs.
True, although it could well have been a 500W version. Not sure. Ill check next time.
10. The room we use just outside of Newcastle centre is always my first choice. Nice staff, warm, plenty of room, and full PA/backline available. To my surprise, this time when we arrived they had 2x Ashdown 4x10s. I am not sure of the model, but they were carpet coated, with plastic corners. Both were 8 ohms. They werent even heavy if im honest. If I think about it, they looked like these: http://www.ashdownmusic.com/bass/detail.as...gacy&ID=195 They also had an Ashdown amp. Again, I didnt take the model down, but im sure it was a 300 Watt version. Anyway, I plugged both cabs in, to see what the tone was like. I set the amp as flat as I could. You know what, pretty damn good sound. Very punchy, and not 'wooly' like Ive heard. It wasnt amazing, but it was very decent. I used both, then decided to just use the bottom one. I actually could barely tell the difference between one or two cabs. Sure, having two meant much more ommphh down low...in fact there was a lot, but no huge differences. Boring observation over!
11. Thats the kind of bargain im trying to find. People think Im mad, but as you have proved you can get a bargain bass that works very well for less money than you might think!
12. Thats the pre price rise figures. Wicked! One thing to be careful of, I went into my local guitarguitar and their TC cabs and the RH450 they had on the top was seriously marked from being dragged about. Im sure you can request fresh stock though.
13. ? I may be tempted to part with it but only if the price is resonance otherwise I'm keeping it
14. Im extremely picky. White/Off White/Sunburst/Tobacco Burst/Fiesta Red/Sonic Blue/Surf Green are the ones that do it for me. I do still quite like a natural finish though, but I only own one elec guitar like that now.
15. "Hey! Im new to here! Im currently looking at buying a new cab (s). Ive just sold my old ones, and I need something thats going to take no more upgrading! The SVT 810E seems to be where it at! Ive tried one a few times, and boy does it sound massive. I like tight punchy growly bass. I use Precisions and Stingrays. I play in hardcore bands at the moment..until Im too old. Ive got a great Trace Elliot SVT12SMX 400Watt Head. Anyone know of any other good cabs?! Ive tried a fair few. I dont think two 410 Ampegs do it right...and it works out more expensive. Retailers im looking at are GAK, GuitarGuitar, Electro, and a few others like Dolphin Music. Anyone used these places before? Anyway, Ive never had much experience with connections other than the cheap peavey connection I had with my old cabs. Head is max load 4Ohms. It has TWO speaker outlets. One is the standard jack to jack type outlet, and the other is a 3 pin style. Im not sure of the technical names sorry ... Anyway, I want to get the right leads. What connections do I need to cater for with the 810E? Im guessing its the Speakon connection I should use? Do I just need one lead from the Trace to one Speakon input? And can you buy a three pin to SPEAKON lead? Want decent quality. Or do I need two?! Just to sneak this in...best Sansamp? Im probably getting the non prog cos its smaller and more lightweight. Is there any need for 3 channels on the prog version? A few places are selling the standard at £160 which is awesome. Lastly, covers for 810E....where can I get a decent one from in the UK?! A lot to ask I know! Thanks Gareth" The old days when all I wanted was an 8x10!
16. To the OP, both pickups on, Sansamp BDDI as pedal. Play with a pick. Done
17.
How to get a punk sound? First, practise room - got to be cold and damp with hard walls (garage, cellar) Second, drummer - needs to be crap but insaneley loud Third, equipment - got to be borrowed and crackling and sh*tty Fourth, drown a crate of beer or sniff some glue or both or more Fifth, crank up the volume that should do it worked for me i mean come on, is punk the new classical music???
Lol, whilst I agree the stereotype of punk can be seen as bad musicians, check out Matt Freeman from Rancid and Brian from a Wilhelm Scream. The genre has changed a lot.
18. Have you considered a lightweight 2x12? What is your budget? What style are you playing? Ive gigged that same amp with the BF Compact and it wasnt that good a match, but it depends on what you need, volume etc.
19. What a shame. Hope you eventually get your cash for the dodgy bass. I can see that thread now for the GS112. I was tempted to make an offer but I wont be bothering now. Sorry to hear it didnt go well.
20.
As for the Walkabout thing, one of the things that makes the Walkabout what it is is the tube that drives the power stage (in addition to the pre-tubes). It's a fairly unique thing.
Aye, I think the talkbass crowd might be expecting too much out of it. Its probably more voiced towards a market contender against the RH450.
21.
I did however my experience with them in the past hasn't been favourable, plus I don't have the full amount to pay ASAP. Just got off the phone with the ever helpful Darren at The Bass Merchant and I've put my deposit down for : Big Al 4 string White finish Black pickguard Rosewood fretboard Triple singe coil pickups Should arrive in febuary. Can't wait.
Mint setup. Not only is it classy, white w/black and rosewood is rather 'punk' which I always like. Glad you went for the rosewood as well, just because I sit firmly in camp rosewood
22. Any UK prices as yet?
23. If you were closer id be down for a test drive!
24.
Indeed.... he used TC Electronic RH450 bass amp as well as two RS410 cabinets
Bloomin heck....not the choice id expect. If you want the more thumpy vintage meets modern funk tone, this amp has that tone for sure. Personally, the whole super pingy 80s slap tone sounds like nails down a blackboard, so the amp works for me. It definitely works excellently with a Musicman bass.
