I'm posting this for a Jazz guitarist friend of mine who has a new quartet in need of a bassist. Here are the details he has given me: - What we are is:

A modern jazz quartet (tenor sax, guitar, bass, drums) with a bluesy, funky feel to the sound.
Playing standards and modern compositions, with points of reference such as Kenny Burrell’s “Midnight Blue”, Joshua Redman’s “Wish” (with Pat Metheny), Grant Green, Stanley Turrentine, and always Miles!! but taking in lots of influences that are outside the sphere of “straight” jazz – world music, reggae, etc.
Based in Southern Essex but open to offers!!
Looking to record a demo and organise gigs once we have the right player
- What we are looking for is:

A bassist (possibly/preferably double bass? or fretless?) with own gear and transport, located within reasonable travelling distance of the Brentwood area (which is roughly central to the other members)
Someone who would be committed to rehearsing on a reasonably regular basis, learning new tunes and playing gigs
Experience and reading welcome but are less important at this stage than commitment and enthusiasm and an open mind
Age less of an issue – I’m now 51 and our drummer is almost 20!!
Contact: Steve Duke <[]> or PM me for his mobile.

It's a long time since I was in Paris, but Paul Beuscher Music is (was?) very close to the Eiffel Tower: 66 Avenue La Motte Picquet, 75015 Paris

One of the best Gear Porn threads in a long while. A very nice collection, including the ones that got away. Good reading too. Thanks for sharing.
A stunningly beautiful array of Babes!
Got an absolute favourite? What would be your one 'Desert Island Bass'?

I've done plenty of recording, band work and other session stuff and try to avoid the copy/paste scenario absolutely wherever possible. If it's a session restricted by time and/or budget, it might prove necessary and I guess that's ok. But it can sound too obvious depending on the part.

+1 to both the above.

Hey, I needed to get together a set-list of Motown songs. Thanks, Bilbo!
My mate's been banging on about them for a couple of years. I really like "Am I Wry? No", but never paid much heed beyond that. But we went to see them live the other night and I was blown away by so many different things, not least the attention to bass - the basslines were really melodic, the bass tone was fantastic, the bass was quite promonent in the mix. The band generally are all really musical - lots of melodies, both vocal and instrumental. At one point I wondered if Yes or Genesis would even be able to sound as complex and tight (and I'm quite a Yes & Genesis fan). I've hit youtube to find anyone doing a decent cover of the bassline for Am I Wry? No, but there doesn't seem to be anything. Might do one myself if I can get time to nail the line . . . If you haven't checked Mew out yet, they're pretty good anyway and on bass value alone they're well worth a listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-S0qJS9mG4 Mark
Thanks for that! I'd not heard Mew before but I have to say I'll be checking them out further.
I'll see tait's Twix and raise it a Mars bar and a large packet of Jelly Beans! Nice bass bb, love that neck. Out of interest, what DSLR did your Dad go for?
I can remember when the only bass magazine you could buy was American. It was full of issues and articles that where irrelevant to me as an English/ British bassist. I bought the guitarist magazines for the one or two pages of bass trivia! If you think BGM is not worth supporting then that is your choice you are under no obligation to buy it, but when it's no longer there I'm sure there will be tread after thread on these pages bemoaning the lack of a magazine that relates to us IMHO. People will be people and find interest in different things/ issues (thankfully) so not everybodys taste will be catered for. Buy it and get what you can from it!!
+1

Nice one, B5! Nathan East is The Man and one of my all-time fave bass players (along with Mr Levin ). Patti Ballinas is a pretty decent singer too as well as a rather tasty drummer!
You might be able to waltz to them, but these two : The Beatles - Norwegian Wood Leo Sayer - When I Need You Are definitely 6/8 , even if the former was incorrectly published as a 3/4 !
I realize, strictly speaking, that waltz time is 3/4. Mind you, I don't think the couples who requested my band play the above songs were particularly bothered whether they were dancing to a 3/4 or 6/8 time sig. As far as they were concerned, and as you intimated in your comment above, they were able to waltz to them!
moon river is the nicest waltz written.
Oops, I can't believe I forgot Moon River... doh!

If you're playing to a mixed age group... Waltzes: The Beatles - Norwegian Wood Debbie Boone - You Light Up My Life Commodores - Three Times A Lady Doris Day - Que Sera Sera Leo Sayer - When I Need You Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now -- and there's always -- Brand X - Euthanasia Waltz Quicksteps: The Cure - The Lovecats Bobby Darin - Mack The Knife Nancy Sinatra - These Boots Are Made For Walkin' Billie Jo Spears - Blanket On The Ground (segue's nicely into 'Hello Mary Lou')

Doc, I have to ask -- any chance of a pic of the new 'Ray? The Vigier does look cool too, btw.

I'd intended going to this, provided nothing came up.... Curses -- something has come up! Got a band rehearsal (pffft, what do they know about Bass Days?! ) Oh well, maybe next time? To those who are going, have a great day and I look forward to seeing any photos here after the event.
Would still swap for the right Fretless Ray
Ok, I've been toying with this for a while as I've been thinking of also going for a fretted 4-string Ray. But I do love my fretless Ray too! However, it's not getting quite as much use at the moment, so maybe...?? The pic in my sig shows it without the tort guard (click to see larger) so I've added a couple here too. Only problem might be the distance between us as I'm always very nervous with couriers etc. If it's not quite what you're after, no worries. Steve.

Redundancy and illness actually led to my going full-time as a musician about 18 years ago. It's been a real rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs, but I love music (mine and others) and am grateful for the opportunity to do something I love -- and even get paid for it! I would also echo many of the sentiments that have been previously mentioned. To me, being 'professional' has always been as much an attitude and state of mind regardless of whether someone is a full-time musician or playing for fun at the weekend. In that regard, I've certainly worked with so-called 'amateur' and 'semi-pro' musicians who were definitely more 'pro' than some so-called 'professionals' I've worked with!
... by someone who was keen to sell you a new wireless unit and wouldn't mind lying to do so? Thread on wireless licensing issues
Hmmm, looks that way. Still, I ended up buying a replacement unit elsewhere anyway. Thanks for the link to the 'Licensing' thread.

I realize I'm just slightly too late but would still like to register my interest just in case by chance another sub turns up or becomes available. [Just noticed the time for my post. Did someone forget to put the BassChat clock back? ]
What? It's fantastic! That line-up is the nucleus of the Blues Brothers Band.. great record. Have you heard the Live CD that came out a few years ago? Brilliant...
You know what, WoT, you're absolutely right! The passage of time is such that I hadn't actually played the album for some time. Listening back now, I will humbly retract my "far from the best..." comment! If anything it has improved with age (...wish I could say the same!! ). -

Band fan here, too. I still have my original vinyl set of "The Last Waltz" (plus the DVD of course). While on the subject, I have a pretty rare US import 3-LP set which I wonder if anyone else might own or have seen. I bought this around 1972/73 and it includes The Bands' own "Music From Big Pink" plus the first album by Quicksilver Messenger Service together with the Steve Miller Band (1st album). Also another original piece of vinyl in the collection is "Levon Helm and The RCO All-Stars": Far from the best of Band-related albums, though not too bad, I had to have it for the line-up alone: (image from the Edsel CD re-issue) -
Yep, that's one seriously nice looking bass. The matching pickup covers really set it off. Your patience has definitely been well rewarded!
