1.
Ooh look, we joined BC on the same day me and thee! I really miss those free festivals - I used to play quite a few in Wales in the '80s. I think I've only paid to go to a festival once and that was the Lovebox three years ago to see the B-52s. Otherwise, I've either been playing them or they've been free anyway.
Ha, so we did! Maybe we should start a club! I've played a few festivals myself (UK and abroad) but don't really go anymore - at least, not as a member of the audience (not unless they supply armchairs, slippers and a sweet trolley! ). Having said that, I may be hangin' around at the High Voltage Festival in July (ELP, ZZ Top, Asia, Marillion, etc).
2. That's a nice trio you have there. The Clover and Spector are nice basses indeed, though I must admit that all-black Jazz looks the canine's dangly bits!
3. Gotta say the Wilkins does it for me too (not that the others don't! ). Spotted the albums too, including Hillage. (Mentioned in a thread elsewhere previously) I saw Gong in Hyde Park in 70-something. Caravan were also on the bill. Can't remember who else now; it was Gong and Caravan I was mainly going to see. Awesome day.
4. I'd be up for any London, or surrounding area, bass bash so I'd say I'm in. Only thing would be my gigging activities possibly clashing with the date. I was up for the 2008 SE Bass Bash right up until a week or so beforehand when a gig did come in for me. I'm glad to say I was able to make the 2009 SEBB which was excellent (much kudos to ped et al) and a great success.
5. A very nice pair, indeed, sir! Like you, I do like the pearl guard thing; particularly white pearl on a white body and black pearl on a black body.
6. Nice looking Thunder 3 though not sure if the modifications with the controls will help or hinder the seller attaining his BIN price of £450...? (started at £360) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=230419822071
7. Don'cha just love it when a plan comes together!? The bass looks fantastic and I wish you both a long and happy life together.
8. I'm not sure if that might be Keni Burke on bass. It was him, along with Nathan East, doing bass duties on the original "Steppin' Out" album. (Album also has a beautiful version of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature").
9. I particularly loved the Dupstaphunk track. Not come across them before but will check 'em out further. I was going to post the original "Steppin' Out" track from George Howard (RIP) but this is a lovely live version of from '85. This guy died way too young.
10. I've always sung (mainly b/v's plus a few lead vocal numbers) but I often like to scat-sing with bass lines for practice and often think about using this at gigs though haven't yet. I also scat-sing harmonies to bass lines, usually a third or fifth above, depending on the line.
11. Wow! Excellent arrangement of an absolute classic. The brass section and backing singers are just superb - not to mention that rhythm section, of course!
12. Sounds like you've already answered your own question.
13. Sorry, Pete - have to chime in here again as I have this album too! Excellent stuff though - Randy Bramwell is on bass. The vocals are credited to The Boyer Brothers. David Span (drums), Memo Acevedo (perc) and Cleveland Hughes (keys). The other big track on the album, for me, is 'Adrenalin' (with Marcus Miller and Lenny White) though sadly it's in copyright dispute at the moment on Youtube.
14. If we were not both bass players, Pete, I'd swear we were in the same band in another life! I've looked at Crusaders and Azymuth tracks in particular to put on here. Not to mention things like The Commodores 'Brick House'. How about some Caldera?
15. This thread continues to make me dig out some of my older (jazz/)funk 'n' groove vinyl, which I really should do more often, so thanks again to Pete for helping me burn the midnight oil! A great album I picked up in the early 80's, purely on the strength of the line-up, was 'Just Family' by Dee Dee Bridgewater. Produced by Stanley Clarke and featuring the likes of Alphonso Johnson, Abe Laboriel, Ken Wild (Seawind) and Stanley on bass. Plus Chick Corea, George Duke, Ray Gomez, Harvey Mason, Bobby Lyle and others. Ken Wild, from jazz-funk band Seawind, was one of the bassists on the above album. This track was from the first Seawind album: Another link from the DDB album above is keyboardist Bobby Lyle. His classic 1977 track 'The Genie' featured (to my ears) some superb bass and drum interaction from Don 'Donnie' Beck and Steve Gutierrez:
16.
Hi all I am sure we are all aware of Jaco, Marcus, Sheehan, Stanley etc etc...But I am looking for new material to learn from lesser known players, who have produced some great basslines. Been playing many years and know of many great player / lines, but always on the lookout for new stuff. A recent addition was the Bass player from the Robben Ford band, Travis Carlton, son of Larry. When i heard him playing I was amazed i'd not heard of him before. Great feel and timing. Anyone have other 'great finds'
Talking of 'son of...' - try Kyle Eastwood, son of Clint.
17. Hi and welcome to Basschat. If you've been hangin' here for a few weeks, you'll have seen there's a very eclectic mix of players, styles and all things bass -- and beyond -- on here. I'm sure there will be plenty who can advise and discuss whatever direction you choose, be it Rock, Blues, Jazz or whatever. Keep your ears and mind open, enjoy your bass and welcome to Basschat!
18. How cool is that! Maybe we should campaign to get this to the Xmas no. 1 spot and knock those other two contenders off their perches!!!
19. Freeez - great 80s Brit-funk band (TOTP 1981). Go, bassman, go! (Nice Aria SB1000 btw). Kokomo - great 70s Brit-funk band
20.
I've always Gassed over the Thunder II Fretless basses. Gorgeous looking basses. I remember seeing Steve Brzezicki playing one when i saw him in Fish's band on the vigil in a wilderness of mirrors tour. Outstanding sounding bass loads of mmmwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
I really should take these puppies out on a gig again soon. I didn't see the tour but I do have the 'Vigil...' album. For me, 'Cliche' is one of his best-ever songs.
21. +1 to all the above. I have almost all the tracks you list here, B5. Nice to hear Chic's 'Savoir Faire' again. I'm gonna dig that piece of vinyl out this afternoon!
22. All things being genuine, I'd put the owner at around 65 years old - which would make this a nice little lump sum towards a pension.
23. That's tasty, tasty, very very tasty...
24.
Just spotted this clip.... lush. And, IMO, based on how it looks and sounds, that bass has had the frets ground down and the neck epoxied.
I see no clips!
