If you need me darling, I'm upstairs surrounded by holiday brochures!

Haha, there's no money left
In threads where people show a collection of their basses, I like to ask what would be their desert-island bass if they had to pick just one. I think in this case, T, the desert island could be more of a looming reality than you think! Nice quartet by the way. So, which one will it be?

Kid Creole & The Coconuts. I saw them in '82 in London at The Lyceum Ballroom. I was out of breath just watchin' em! The live videos don't really do the shows justice. As they say - you had to be there...! Kid Creole & The Coconuts - Live Cologne 1982 - Table Manners Kid Creole and the Coconuts - I'm A Wonderful Thing Baby This is more recent and with a full orchestra. (Don't miss the one and only glimpse of the 6-string single-cut bass around 4:15. Not sure which one it is, if someone could enlighten me? W&T? ACG? Nice tone!)
Her playing on the (not commercially available ) Crossroads dvd I have is far superior to her playing on the Ronnie Scotts dvd ( a much better mix helps too). As for Rhonda being a better player, I'm not sure there's any such thing at this level. There are only players you prefer. In addition, you can only judge a player by the setting they're in and the musicians they're playing with, which makes it doubly difficult, as different players will thrive in different arenas. Would Jeff Berlin be better than Cliff Williams in AC/DC? I sincerely doubt it. As for the vibrato comment, again, simply a matter of taste. I really can't stand all this "player A is better than player B" nonsense, it serves no purpose whatsoever.
+1

Just tragic. It's late and I don't have the words but it's mostly all been said and I sincerely echo everyone's sentiments here. My sincere condolences to all who knew Tim. And not forgetting the guitarist he was trying to save who also lost his life. Doubly tragic.
Can anyone point me to any youtube stuff with Jeff Beck on it that they really rate? - I've only heard a very few old things he's done and I never understood why he was so lauded, (and no, I don't mean Hi Ho...) but maybe I didn't hear the "good stuff". Cheers folks, I'm sure you won't let me down!
Got your ears on then...? So much to choose -- (not just the stuff at Ronnie's) -- so little room! OMG, OG! That is rather nice. May we expect a report once you've had a chance to gig it? (Or is that a silly question? )

Personally, I wouldn't have minded seeing the previous line-up if I could have made it to the O2. I do love the Ronnie Scott's dvd, especially with Vinnie C, one of my favourite drummers. Tal must have been with Jeff Beck for 2 or 3 years now anyway. Maybe it was just time to move on(?). Mind you, I know NMW is no slouch on drums either. Rhonda, too, of course. Are Vinnie and Tal (still) an item? Are they off to do other stuff together!? Music-wise, of course!

New addition to the 7string armoury. But what is it??
Stingray5 replied to 7string's topic in Gear Gallery
With the help of my in-laws, I was lucky enough to be able to buy a new guitar last week. I tracked the journey of the new axe as it made its way across Europe and Big Brown (as the American's call UPS) delivered it at lunchtime. It's a really great guitar and I'm going to give it a once over during my college course this evening (2nd session of the Guitar Repair class). As ever, it doesn't exist if there's no pics so I've taken some. As usual it takes me 30 or so shots to get 1 decent shot !! The question is: What is it??
Well I know what it ain't - it ain't a bass! Nice colour and finish. Nice touch, too, with the staggered string-thru's. Not a Tom Anderson perchance? -
It's the angle of the pic. Here's a more straight on shot:
Ah, sorted! Again - nice!
Great thread! Here's my 79. (My first post)
Nice! Looks in great nick. As previously mentioned, I was also wondering about the G not seeming to align with the pole-pieces (...or is it just the angle of the pic?). Welcome to BC, btw

If money were no object, what bass would you have?
Stingray5 replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I'd go for this Pikasso (around $25,000) just so I could say to a group of guitarists "my guitar's got more strings than all of yours put together... nyah!" -
I have to agree with much of the above. My own '89 Stingray5 is a lovely instrument but the build consistency of MM basses in general is very good and newer models I've played feel and sound every bit as good. That said, my SR5 has a lived-in look and feel that, for me, only comes with age.

Stingray5 replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
I'm sort of GAS-less(!) at the moment but if pushed I'd have to say a genuine, all-original 62 P bass would do it for me. Failing that, probably a custom-built boutique job a la Shuker, etc. -
Yeah, and he sings too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE6tovWYBNE

This may or may not fit the bill. A G&L L-2000 (Tribute, so not USA). No bids (possibly other watchers?) and currently still at £395. Just under 3 hours to go. And it's in Lincoln! I actually thought of 'East River' while on this thread last week but got so distracted with other tracks, I totally forgot. Honest, guv! Anyway, just to say, it's one of my all-time fave funk tracks. Yeah - Heavy Metal Be-Bop... Along with East River, I was also going to post some Joe Hubbard and others. Joe Hubbard - Can't Find The Time Joe Hubbard - Auspicious Time Ronnie Laws - Always There (couldn't see if this had already been posted). (So many other versions of this tune: e.g. Willie Bobo's is a good 'un) B Baker & The Chocolate Company - Snowblower ...and finally... Norman Connors - Black Cow
-
That does look nice. But hey, this is a porn section, so can we have a full body shot? (...of the bass, that is )
-
Hi Tim and welcome to Basschat. For my 2p-worth, I'd go along with the notion of trying anything and everything you can get your hands on. If your budget of £500-£1000 is for a bass alone, then you are in a very vibrant section of the market with a wealth of quality basses to choose from. Rather than get into the Bass A vs Bass B vs Bass C argument, I'd just say get out there and have fun looking. Speaking as a guitarist too, I'm sure you'll also come to appreciate that the deep end is where it's at... And don't forget to let us know what you finally end up with. Cheers, Steve

Can't remember if this was in Pete's 'Funk and Groove' thread but, anyway, this is another of my fave JGW tracks: As the JGW fans will probably already know, Frank Zappa was a big fan of Watson and got him to contribute to his 'One Size Fits All' album on the track 'Andy'. (I couldn't find any original versions of this online; maybe try Spotify. There's a great version by Zappa Plays Zappa though).

What, no Sting? I'd have thought at least the Macca nay-sayers would have had him hung drawn and quartered long before now...
-
I was just on my way over to the 'Funk and Groove' thread when I heard the commotion coming from here and thought I'd have a butchers... Any room on that sofa? I've got donuts! (mmmm, donuts)
