1. Just what I was looking for, unfortunately my Ray5 fretless didn't sell so it'll have to remain just looking I'm afraid
2.
warwick have similar neck thickness. check out their web site for neck dimensions. quite interesting if you're as sad as me. although i have heard someone complain about warwicks diving.
Had 2 Warwicks, both bolt ons and modern ovankol/wenge necks - a thumb 4 and a ash corvette 4. Wouldn't say they neck dove as such but they definitely hung horizontal as a preference.
3.
The Status is headless I belive? What's the thickness of the neck like - I don't know how to technically describe it, but what I'm used to and like with the RBX is the neck thinness, so for example at fret 1, from fretboard to the back of the neck is around 2cm.
The streamline is headless yes. Neck profile....feels similar to a modern USA precision to me, quite slim front to back but the wider fretboard width of about 1.6" compared to 1.5" on a Jazz. I find it very playable and I almost exclusively played a Jazz for years.
4.
i repeat. the weight of the body is less effective than the actual design of the bass. i have a 5lb bass that balances perfectly. only 32" but 26 frets so not a short neck. the centre of gravity is the be all and end all. also helps if the right hand button isn't in the centre of the bass but slightly higher.
Not necessarily disagreeing with you but I once owned a Stingray on the lighter side of typical (about 8.5lbs) and that didn't balance as well as my current Ray4. As far as could tell the pin positions were exactly the same. Obviously the neck length, and body weight have some effect on the cog. On your 5lb special I guess you're using lightweight neck wood and tuners to ensure good balance?
5. Like you I don't have a great deal of love for basses with neck dive. At the minute the 2 Rays I have certainly aren't lightweights, the 4 stringer is about 9.5lb and the 5 a bit over 10, however the weight is in the body on both so they balance well. Due to this both are tolerable on gigs even tho I'm a lightweight mid 5 footer. I've had a couple of lightweight basses (7lb ish) an Overwater Perception and an Epi EBO. Due to the small light bodies on both they both suffered with neck dive and both ended up going. The only lightweight bass I've owned (and still own) that doesn't suffer from neck dive is my Status. Because of this it gets all the longer set gigs.
6.
MB1. Careful with that axe Eugene!
.......'it causes condensation'? Half Man Half Biscuit....a classic. Nah I was thinking more screwdrivers and drill.....
7. Now withdrawn. Time for some modifications......
8. Jim, thought this was going to be the one for you! I'd love this meself, but my last MM failed to shift so I think I'm going to stick with what I've got at the moment. Lovely bass, deserves to sell.
9. One last bump before this gets shelved.
10. Excellent bass at a great price Dave. I'm biassed but these truly are unsung heroes in the bass gear world. Can't justify another one so good luck with the sale
11. Well, in the interest of getting this moved I've (foolishly?) decided to put this in at £625!!! This is for collected, if you want it posted then it's £650. Im only holding this for today then it'll be withdrawn and kept as a wall ornament.
12. And another big bump for the very cheap Stingray
13. JT.....Dont get so excited..... It's not a Status but it does the job, It's acceptable for Jamnights and rough gigs. Is it worth £60..........IMHO, yes. Now........take a deep breath and give it up. You are achieving precisely nothing and expanding energy in order to do so. Just my 2p.
14. Well I've seen something I quite fancy and I've got a few days off next week so I'm going to knock this down to £650 collected or £675 delivered for this weekend. I've got potential for a px deal so that'll be explored after the weekend so if you're interested let me know sooooooon.
15.
Yep. We do JJF as well - or rather the rest of the guys do. I've been playing something totally different for the last 4 years and they haven't noticed...
Think I play something different every time I 'have' to play JJF
16. Jim, I don't think there's that much difference in sound between maple and rw boards (ducks for cover), had both and in a dark room I'm buggered if I'd hear it. However I can understand personal preference, with me I prefer rw on a Ray because the oiled board on a modern EBMM can get caked up and takes some care. Now the finished ebmms of the 80s and early 90s I think are better as are pre ebs
17.
dont trade!!! just buy a decent workhorse bass that plays brilliantly and sounds as wicked as any of the boutique copies!!! surely you can afford this and keep the MM too!!
Yup I've got to +1 this suggestion. I play in a function band and a 5 would be useful for probably no more than 10% of the set. I'd go a cheapy and keep the big Al
18.
I havent even quized them about it via Ebay, Do you think I should just to see what crap they come back with or to see if they ask someone to check it again? The fact they say its a green pcb and quote a part number suggests someone with the authority to mess there has looked and given that response though. Its a tricky price too because whats worth anything on it? Pre amp has been changed, Neck has frets added, Body has an extra route, Pickup is a Basslines one. The string tree is missing, So really its only the Pick guard, tuners and bridge (which even has the thumb turns missing) of any value from what I can see.
I keep toting with the idea of selling off a couple of basses (not the 30th this time tho Pete!) and picking up a decent pre eb but this sort of thing (and the minefield I went thru last year when looking for a nice old mid 70s Jazz) puts me off. Think I'll just stick with my 2006 pre-eb 'copy'.
19. Nice bass Jim, damn you sell/trade some good stuff. Pity I have no suitable trade fodder......fancy a rare immaculately Chinese crafted limited edition sonic blue Sue Ryder P bass?
20.
You should pop by and have a play before it disappears :-)
Now that would just be torment.
21.
This is just a ridicules price for a top fretless 'ray. Having bought a fretless stingray form Mart in the past, I know that it will be in excellent condition too
Cheers Paul, yup, despite being a few years older this is in pretty much the same condition as the one I sold you. If I could get comfortable with the inevitable wider board that comes with the B string I'd keep it, for some reason it seems to make more difference to my playing on a fretless than a fretted. Having said that every 5 string fretted I've ever owned has ended up going..
22.
Thanks Bubinga5, I think the market is pretty dead at the moment but like you say, this is a great price and I am not going to drop it or give it away. I will just wait until things pick up.
Pity you're not in the Market for a Ray5 fretless Linus or I'm sure we could have come to a deal.
23. I would seriously love this and you're in my neck of the woods as well. Stoney broke bump....
24. Had a couple of hours on this last night and had forgotten how well it plays (for a 5!). Still interested in a sale or trade should anyone wish to relieve me of this fine example of a Musicman tho...
