1. Standard balanced mic cable ( XLR male to female) should do it.
2. I can vouch for the quality and reliability of these DAWs. I am still using my DPS16 and getting great results.
3.
I use LaBellas strung through on a Fender P. No issue for 3 years.
Cheers. Nice facial hair too!
4. I know this has been aired before, because I recall reading the thread, but the search terms bring up zillions of unrelated hits! I am once again GASing for a Pawn Shop Mustang, but I favour flats and the Mustang's bridge is through-body only. I have read in various posts that: (1) this is bad news for flats and causes the windings to separate if the break angle is too large; (2) some people do this anyway and don't have a problem; (3) there are some brands of flats that don't seem to mind or at least are less susceptible to such problems; and (4) some string manufacturers make through-body flats to order. The truth is out there, and it's most likely to be found here on Basschat
5.
On a gig, trying to sound exactly like your favourite bass player on record is a mugs game.
The question I ask myself about my live sound is: Is it bitchin' ? That's what I'm shooting for. Oops, hijacking my own thread!
6. It's often the way - the sound you hear when trying kit in a shop is no guide as to what it will be like in a live or recorded mix. And how many people would opt for a big semi-solid to play on a disco or funk track, but it worked for Gary King.
7. Never had this happen on any guitar or bass I have owned.
8. Surely no extra DI box needed. Just connect straight from Streamliner DI output to Apogee input. Level is controlled by Volume knob 2nd from left.
9. Appearance was one of the factors that made me decide on a P-derived bass rather than a Dingwall. (The other was cost!) I didn't think I could turn up for a country gig with a fan-fretted five! In general if I consider a bass or guitar to be fugly I will just keep looking, no matter how good it is in other respects.
10. A bit alarmed to hear this, being a VM4 owner myself. I have had mine nearly a year, so I'm thinking any problem should have showed itself by now. However I recently fitted higher tension strings (45-105 Chrome flats in place of the 40-100 rounds it came with), so I'm hoping this won't cause bother. Thinking about it, that's got to be an issue with the wood grain - a duff but of timber getting through the QC process?
11.
I first heard 'Darling Dear' in 1970 on the Jackson Five 'Third Album' where it was the last track. I loved in then and still think it's one of the best bass guitar performances ever on vinyl.................Enjoy!!!
Gonna have to but a Greatest Hits rather than just listen to them on U-Toob!
12.
Yep a 'studio switch' can be one of the most valuable additions to your bass if you want to preserve your tone
Ah, the time-honoured DFA control!
13. Just pulled out the dots for 'I Want You Back'. Boy things have changed since I first attempted this! On the gear front I can now create a tight punchy sound, which is something my Ashdown rig (bless it) never gave me; and my technique has improved more than I realised. It's all gravy! EDIT: That breakdown is still a finger-knotter though!
14.
The music press and radio stations had some great fun with the story at the time.
Well I never knew that!
15.
That was Chuck Rainey - no wonder it's lovely!
Day off today, so into the shed with Gary and Chuck!
16. Just found this Talkbass thread on Gary King.
17.
I love those basslines too. Here's some info from a Google search: Gary King The late New York studio vet (Bob James, Roberta Flack) played on the Jacksons album Destiny [Epic, 1978], including the hit "Blame It on the Boogie." http://www.bassplaye...ing-of-pop/4769
Cheers for that. Did he by any chance play on Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway's version of 'You've Got a Friend'? That's just lovely.
18. I find that headphones help a lot when transcribing tricky or indistinct parts.
19.
Stop wasting time on the internet & get in the shed;)
If I spent as much time practising as I do piddling around on Basschat...
20. I recently came across a printed bass part that I did about 8 tears ago for 'Blame It On The Boogie'. At the time I would often download a MIDI song file and import the bass line into a program called Encore, then tidy it up. I had transposed it down to Db for a dep gig that I think never came off. I realised this when I tried to play along to the track! Anyway, I did a new version in Sibelius in the original key of Eb - what a great song, and a superb bass line - it really makes the song. I've had so much fun playing it, as my technique has somewhat moved on since I originally tried it. I know I have a bass part for 'I Want You Back' as well, and that one is pretty tricky, with off-beat 16th-note runs, especially in the breakdown. I aim to give that the same treatment. Where am I going with this? First I just wanted to share the love for great disco songs. Second, does anyone know who played bass on these records? One of the brothers? Famous session player? Little-known session player?
21. Welcome aalam! I was 40 when I started to learn bass, so it really is never too late. Have fun playing along with all sorts of music, then find other people to play with - that's even more fun!
