Jason Newsteds abilities were wasted on Metallica
Black Coffee replied to shoulderpet's topic in General Discussion
Would I put up my bass being absent on my debut album to play on one of the hottest shows in town tour after tour ? probably would have found a way to deal with it. Their cunning stunts dvd was not hiding the bass and it was excellent. JN was popular with the fans too. Always appears to give 100% -
Jason Newsteds abilities were wasted on Metallica
Black Coffee replied to shoulderpet's topic in General Discussion
Having watched some coverage about the period of the band when JN was just through the door I though he did well to not lose the rag with the stick about “Jizz on you ‘stead” and the way JH and LU kept saying “how do you know when the bass is too loud? You can hear it”. At the end of the day it’s all ancient history now, and JN is an accomplished player who was the right man at the right time to put up with the angst and frustration in the band at the time and he was there through it. Cliff Burton was a genius and was more to do with Metallica’s early sound than most would give him credit for. The one time I saw them they were a class act and they played a stack of oldies which imho sounded better than most of the newer material. My elder son was only 12 and was at the gig too with me and he loved it. Good night of music. -
Jason Newsteds abilities were wasted on Metallica

So sad the bass sound was rubbed out in the justice recordings when the bass would have put the depth in the songs that was so painfully obviously absent. Ive been a Metallica fan for decades but it seems that the loss of Cliff (genius bass player imho) has never really been put behind them. Ive seen them live only once and Mr Trujillo bosses the bass, but I can’t help but wonder what may have been had that bus not flipped. -

Custom build buyers remorse - what did you get wrong?
Black Coffee replied to Drax's topic in General Discussion
The only remorse I have from my acg custom build is that I had a domestic cash flow crisis and had to sell it about 8 weeks after I got it. If the person I sold it to ever decided to move it on I’d jump at the chance to have it back. does this answer count ? -

Where is best for strings these days?
Black Coffee replied to pintspiller's topic in General Discussion
Ernie ball regular slinky or power slinky on a 35” scale. Stay in tune really well in all situations. Never had one break on me, not that I play hard - but imho they are tune and forget strings. Does what it says on the tin as such. -
I’ve bought cymbals for my drum kit form them. Cheapest by a long shot and all went fine, except the delivery time being about a week. At the price I got a 19” Istanbul crash for I was well happy to wait.

I don’t know enough about Clapton to have an opinion on this mediocre rating for him. I have heard and read much however about his bland personality and also his reputed influence on millions of musicians. Does him being labelled by this person who has spoken out as a bland horrible/insensitive/racist or whatever sort of person make him a poor musician. No. What has this individual to gain by this opinion?

New is always an opportunity to learn something different. But. Cant stand newly manufactured karaoke groups of 5 posturing voices who call themselves bands. Nothing personal, just prefer instruments - and individually gifted musicians combining as one.

What's your fantasy Lotto jackpot bass gear shopping list?

Dingwall Z3 with buckeye burl top and a super J with exotic blood red wooden stain on a quilted maple top for 5 string ammunition Fender Steve Harris sig with the blue sparkle and mirror pickplate for 4 string ammunition. Barefaced 8x10 (because I will have enough money to buy a house in the middle of nowhere where I can make as much noise as I wish). Hands down best cabs I’ve ever used imho after owning a super twin. A plethora of different amps, as there’s too many I already covet that I can’t afford probably starting with a tube driven beast - well because I can. -
Phantom of the opera - maiden Something happened on the way to heaven - phil collins st Jimmy - green day a bit of a mixture - i know. Three songs that cover most of what i enjoy in playing. I had never really gotten around to playin slap bass well and theres lots of songs i would like to be good at playing slap on. But im only a bass playin cub and theres time yet as im only playing 33 years. 🤣

Stentor double bass This is a 3/4 size stentor elysia double bass and has been used while learning and working through the grades. Also has been played on tour with UYO, in europe and several times in the Ulster Hall and Guildhall. It has been meticulously and lovingly cared for and deserves being owned by someone who will continue to enjoy playing and looking after it; as its owner no longer plays. Comes with a stand (in picture) and stout heavy gigbag. This a beautiful instrument at about £1,000 less than they are new.
