Strange....use of two 4x10s hardly made any difference to using one!
Musky replied to Musicman20's topic in Amps and Cabs
ashdown heads.... how were the speaker cables plugged in? I found this too. Plug both cabs into a socket on the amp..... and the volume drops. Plug one speaker into the amp, then daisy chain the other cab in, and it will be louder. (presuming the in/outs on the cab and wired in parallel. No idea why but I doubled the volume and clarity of my old church's rig by realising
Now that is distinctly odd. Something tells me there might have been some problem with one of the sockets (like the phase), but it'd be interesting to find out if anyone else has experienced this. -
Tell me about it! I had to remove a listing on ebay for a 330 copy three times, even after just showing a close-up photo of it's toaster pickup! The third time had no photos at all, but JH also strongly objected to the use of 'copy of... Weller, Townsend, McGuinn & Lennon' in the title description! He even sent me a cease & desist message, calling me a counterfeiter & describing my actions as 'sneaky' & 'cynical'. I like that Shaftesbury though, been after one of those for a while - not sure about the price(?). Anybody else on here going after it?
That's JH for you - always going the extra mile.

I notice she's photoshopped out the name on the TRC as well. Interestingly I did a search on RIC's UK trademarks the other day and was a bit surprised to find the only UK trademarks they own are for the name and the TRC design. Considering JH has made a big thing about having trademarked ALL of Rickenbacker's key design elements, I was even more surprised to find that in the US that's only expanded to cover the headstock and body designs, the Rickenbacker logo, as well as the horseshoe and toaster pickups . I know nothing about trademark law, but the body drawings supplied weren't very detailed (certainly not detailed enough to make out the bridge design, for instance) and it occurred to me that the trademark would be for the general design as a whole rather than the various distinctive components. It all seemed a little odd, given that JH has been harassing Hipshot for using the same footprint for their replacement bridge.
Does anyone remember that old television programme "Trouble Shooter" with John Harvey-Jones, the big-shot business guru (a sort of Alan Sugar figure), who would go into 'failing' companies, study them and then make all sorts of recommendations for change? He did a programme on Morgan and was basically appalled at how they did everything, from design to manufacture and marketing. He made all sorts of (fairly obvious) recommendations to update the company with the latest management thinking which would have turned them into just another apecialist car maker. The board (family-owned I believe) were polite but basically rejected all his advice, the gist of their response being that their approach to things, old-fashioned as they were, was actually one of Morgan's biggest assets. Of course, we can't be sure that Morgan wouldn't have become the next BMW if they had followed the guru's advice ( ), but we do know that they have survived against all the dire predictions from the 'experts'. A lot of "bad design" is like that. Once it becomes iconic, the design flaws simply melt away and become accepted as 'character'. Funny old world.
Quite strange that I was thinking of Morgan and that programme even before Simon mentioned them. Like you point out, the guys at Morgan just didn't think of themselves as the sort of company that Harvey-Jones wanted to turn them into. It's pretty much the same at Rickenbacker. I'm no fan of Jon Hall or some of his policies, but it seems to me that keeping Rickenbacker entirely in house rather than opting for off shore production is a result of his families history in the design. He's personally bound up in the brand, and like Morgan doesn't seem to see Rickenbacker as a bulk producer. And he actually seems to believe that Rickenbacker are purveyors of consistently high quality, top flight instruments!

Only 16-17 working days to deliver as well. What's he doing - training a flock of carrier pigeons to deliver it?

Does Anyone know anything about these?
Musky replied to JMT3781's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
The keyboard player in my last band had a Vox Jaguar, which was the less upmarket version of the Continental. I did the buying for him as he didn't have an Ebay account at the time (this being nearly 7 years ago now). He paid £300 odd for it, and about another £200 to get it fully sorted out. The Continentals go for more, but the dual manuals sit between the two price-wise - they don't have the Beatles connection. No idea how much current prices are though. The dodgy G will be a fault with the board - all of the same notes on these keyboards originate from a single board. Probably a simple fix, but there doesn't seem to be a vast number of techs about with experience of these keyboards. That's just about all I know about them, but I found combo-organ.com a wealth of information at the time. -
Whoa, that's pretty gross! I didn't think it was possible to make one of those Kay 'fakers look worse than they already were.
you'll probably laugh at me... I'm a guitarist but in this case I'm interested in buying a bass...a very cheap one cause I still don't know if I will like playing bass...maybe in the future I will buy a good one.. to be clear I would spend around 275 pound (don't laugh ) and I was searching for a mexican Fender Jazz Bass that looks like this one [url="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop_image/product/39a48a1a6a8bab19ee44f2204b000443.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/10810-fender-60-s-jazz-bass-black-.html&usg=__roGqA6LzDhqcmPut847xZ5VkbRY=&h=780&w=780&sz=99&hl=it&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=eD8S7edk_y1zmM:&tbnh=144&tbnw=144&prev=/images%3Fq%3DFender%2BJazz%2BBass%2Bblack%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dit%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D592%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C74&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=550&ei=ONboTIzSNsSOjAf4lPyFAw&oei=rtXoTNqYEJ2ShAe8xKEP&esq=21&page=1&ndsp=21&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0&tx=72&ty=18&biw=1280&bih=592"]http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http...280&bih=592 do you think other less famous brands would be better at this prize ? Please let me know.. thanks a lot
If it's specifically a black/tortoiseshell MIM you want you should probably expect to have to wait a while, but one will show up either here or on one of the other sites mentioned. One was listed the day before you signed up - perhaps that was what drew you here? If it's just a jazz style bass you want, that opens up a world of possibilities including the Squier Classic Vibes and Vintage modified basses. -
Couple of things spring to mind here. In a tuned cabinet, which this is, the cabinet dimensions, port size and pipe length were all selected to match the original driver. You can probably get away with just swapping drivers in bigger cabinets but in a cabinet this small the margins are going to be so much tighter. The dimensions (volume of airspace used up by the cone and magnet etc.) of the driver are taken into account in the cabinet design so just sticking something else in there may cause problems. If the speaker isn't the original then I'd be more inclined to go and find an original driver to replace it with - thats the only way you're going to get the whole thing back to the original spec and give it a chance to perform in the way that the manufacturer intended. If you do decide to swap the driver then a BL12 200X is no good - the amp is rated at 300W into 8Ω and you need a speaker that can match this.
By the sound of things the cabinet wasn't originally ported.
The cabinet is around 13cu in (ie about 14 x 14 x 12) with a 3" port - don't know the tube length, could measure it if necessary - in place of the tweeter.

So is a luthier building the bass for the OP, using the Jap Faker he got here? Just trying to clarify what's going on, having missed this when the first post was up. Although I don't know why he doesn't just come on the thread & tell us! J.
I didn't see the original post either, but Silddx commented on the luthier's introduction thread about this project. Actually the OP's post was deleted two days before the luthier turned up, so I don't know what's going on either.
Weird. What happened?
I'm guessing that the thread was pulled at the request of the luthier making it - after you pointed out this thread in the introductions forum! Mr. Hall may indeed have better things to do than set the hounds on custom builders, but that won't necessarily stop them from getting jumpy! Bit of a shame really, as I'd have like to see how this panned out.
The slim profile and thin nut is what seperates a jazz neck from a P neck. So yea, all jazz necks have a thin nut and slim profiles. Can't think of any stock fender jazz basses that have precision necks on them, so I guess all jazz basses have the same thin necks. I'm 99% certain that they haven't changed the profiles on jazz necks since they started making them.
When I was learning bass my tutor had a lovely transitional period 60's Jazz. Great neck on it, and it inspired me to buy a mid 70's Jazz for myself. I had it for the shortest period I've ever had a bass. The long and short of it is that Jazz necks have definitely changed profiles over time.

Sounds like a decent price. Not sure where he's buying Schallers for £125 though. I thought about half that was their usual price???
The Epis are quite popular & can go for a few quid. Possibly to weirdos but who am I to judge?
Oy! Who are you calling weird! You're right about the knobs though Jon, assuming they would have been the same as my Epi. And Jerry, although the pickup covers are nice a chunky, they're considerable skinnier when naked! -
I've got a bass that's been modded to receive remote power. It has an XLR instead of a regular output jack, although that connects up to a seperate power supply rather than an amp.

Didn't Ashdown do a UK made limited edition? Normally they're made in China AFAIK.
To do it properly you need a straight edge that covers three frets at a time. A fret rocker has a different sized edges so that you can do this all over the neck.
Steel ruler plus hacksaw? I'm such a cheapskate!

Rare certainly. That's not quite the same as valuable, if that's what you were asking. It has to be said the Pangborn basses are quite rare themselves, despite the fact that these were the core of Ashley's business. He was never a volume builder, and despite Mark King's usage raising his profile in the eighties his instruments never received the sort of profile perhaps they deserved. Add to that they've been out of production for over 20 years and you get a builder that many people have sadly never heard of. Doubly so when it comes to guitars - as you point out, he's best known for basses. I wouldn't like to hazard a guess at any possible value and I think the only way your friend may find out is by sticking it up on ebay. Though I suspect he'll probably be hanging on to it.
we rehearse in a hall so there may be some temperature changes, there is some improvement if i concentrate
I'd really expect the buzz to disappear altogether when you concentrate on your fingering. It doesn't require that much pressure on the string to fret it properly, and once your attention has been brought to the problem I'd have thought it should go away. If this doesn't also happen when you practice for more than 45 minutes at home perhaps the issue is being exacerbated by a more exuberant right hand technique in a band situation. Is this happening all over the neck? It could be that the bass is in need of a set up or that just the strings need raising slightly. If the set up is adjusted for a low action only just on the right side of fret buzz, when you tire it might be that the problem arises. The same applies if the neck is shifting slightly. If this doesn't happen at home I'd start by raising the strings slightly. If it turns out to be purely down to technique it's easy enough to lower them again.
