1.
I'm totally lost! What's with the 12th fret harmonic thing??
Read Lawrence's explanation above and take a look at the link in Jean Luc's post. If you're still struggling with intonation it might be worth hopping on a train to take up Lawrence's offer - it's one of those things that become obvious once you actually seen it done. Or maybe you could check youtube for a video - the process is exactly the same for both bass and guitar.
 2. I hear a can of worms being opened. There is no one best bass; that's why you've got to own lots.
 3.
SB Elite. I presume this is Matsumoku as claimed. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...atchlink:top:en And a cardinal series at what I think is a rather high price. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aria-Pro-2-Cardinal-...=item255f98dd61
Whoa! That Cardinal is waaay overpriced. Even at half that I'd be thinking twice.
 4. Waynepunkdude must deserve an award for gigging with a band the same day it formed!
 5. Henry Thomas with his Westone
 6.
It's been covered loads of times - even Rolf Harris and Dolly Parton have done covers of it! I remember one done back in the 80's that was a cut down version and far shorter than the original, but I think they were a 'one hit wonder' whose name escapes me.-
Indeed. Dread Zeppelin even counted Robert Plant as a fan apparently. I really don't remember enough of the details to have any idea why Led Zep would have wanted an injunction to prevent the release of a cover, but in the seventies rock was Serious Business - perhaps they just didn't like the idea of someone taking their art in vain. Or perhaps it was something more prosaic.
 7. Ampeg moved most of their production to Vietnam over two years ago now. I've not noted any negative comments about reliability with the new stuff, but then again I can't say I've really been looking for them.
 8.
Can you provide some examples ? I have never heard of anyone being prevented from using works providing the royalties are correctly assigned. They may get sued or investigated by PRS and have to re-assign royalties, but they are not stopped from using them permanently - or am I wrong here ?
Way back in the mid/late seventies I remember a case reported in the NME where Led Zeppelin prevented someone covering Stairway to Heaven, on the grounds that it was derogatory. I can't remember whether it had actually been released or was about to be released, but I do remember that the journalist wasn't overjoyed with the news as he thought it was a good version. I don't remember who was responsible for the cover, and don't think I'd ever heard of them even at the time.
 9. The Precision is the most copied bass in the world, and it's not that uncommon for people to stick genuine (or genuine looking) Fender logos on them. Some will even go as far as buying an old neck plate or one of the fakes that turn up from time to time in order to convince others that it's the real deal, so even a serial number is no guarantee that it's a genuine Fender. Unfortunately there are enough differences yours isn't a real Fender, but it is quite an accurate copy. As to what it really is, that's anybody's guess. It might have a bit of age to it though, judging by the tuners and flat topped knobs - most newer versions of those seem to follow a different pattern. It looks lovely whatever it is.
 10. Not quite a straight A pedal. Not sure when this is from though - Brian Johnson is singing. Edit: Attachment deleted 12/3/11 to save some disk space!
 11.
...? Since when did this become "the rule"? You're hardly likely to mistake what someone is talking about simply because they call it a Ric rather than a Rick.
Unless someone was talking about the company rather than an instrument... I'm sure there are plenty of people who didn't know what RIC was.
 12. Sorry, I didn't twig that you were referring to the one in the ad.
 13.
According to "The Complete History of Rickenbacker Guitars" by Richard R. Smith, the difference between deluxe and standard (S) models is: As for set-neck instruments, the book does describe many Rickenbacker guitars as having glued-in necks, but for basses it says: I don't think anybody would claim a set-neck to be "removable", so this supports the claim that Rickenbacker have never made a set-neck bass - just neck-through or bolt-on.
Rickresource has pictures of set neck basses in it's Articles section, but they certainly weren't the norm. Delberthot - the 1999 and 4001S models were one and the same, 1999 being Rose Morris' designation for them.
 14.
Great find CrazyKiwi!
Not sure that was a 'find' really. He seems to have emailed Kiwi with the above information. Nice of him to have taken the time.
 15.
The MIJ Fenders are (or perhaps it's now "were") made on the Tokai Japan production line.
That's the bit that rings true about this story. In 2008 Fender Japan started marking their instruments as Made in Japan again, rather than Crafted in Japan. Given the story about Made in Japan being associated with Fuji Gen's production of instruments perhaps there has been a change of manufacturers again. Fuji Gen?
 16. Tokai has been making copies of Fender instruments since the seventies, and are quite happy to stick their own name on the headstock. Why on earth would they feel the need to suddenly stick another brand on there? In short, it's BS.
 17.
Came across plenty of pubs and village halls with HH amps as well at the time. Rubbish. Don't let time fool you- they're terrible.
I'm not letting time fool me. I've still got my Bass Machine, and I'm hanging on to it for a reason - I really like it's core tone. And a mate still regularly gigs with his old VS plus an HH slave unit. I'd imagine they're not for everyone though. Like Nick I've not used an HH cab, but quite honestly there are very few drivers dating back to the late 70's that can handle bass at a decent volume.
 18.
Just bagged a H/H Studio 60B 'Bass Baby' for £30. Surprisingly loud for its size & very punchy. Buit in compressor, parametric EQ & bi-amp outs too! Like the look of it, quite 80's retro IMO. Its a tad noisy, so I'm gonna give it a look over this weekend, but I'm happy with it.
Congratulations Nick. I used to have one of these for practice use and they've got a great tone to them. Never did find a use for the bi-amp though.
 19.
to be honest with you on gumtree you don't find many...and on ebay it seems that there are no second hand mexican fender jazz bass...do you know any shop in London where I can find good deals with second hand instruments? thanks
Are you sure? I seem to see a lot of MIM"s on ebay, but they're not always advertised as such. You've just got to know what you're looking at.
 20. Happy Jack - are you sure your version of ASD doesn't supporting saving as an MP3? The version I've got will save as mp3, m4a, AIFF (WAV) and Quicktime (though I suspect I'd need the full version of Quicktime to save in this format - I've never tried).
 21.
<snip> Just about the only gripe I have with ASD is that it won't save files in mp3 format, only as WAV. Highly recommended.
Strange. My version (2.8.5, so a few years old) saves as AIFF (I'm using a mac), MP3, Quicktime and M4a.
 22.
Lawsuits, both settled and pending, would suggest otherwise - including, but not limited to, the authorship of the moniker Lady GaGa. Interesting, if all claims against Ms Stefani Germanotta were found to be substantiated, there would be very little about the construct Lady GaGa that was Germanotta's original creation. It might go some way to explaining the somewhat schizophrenic nature of the album, The Fame, and why Germanotta is spending so much money, via private bargain and at public auction, buying up copies of her privately pressed prior commercial releases.
I never knew that. But I'm not much of a fan of either Lady GaGa or Ellie Goulding.
 23.
It seems that most of the songs we play are out of tune or in dropped keys. Its easy enough to drop the E string to a Eb, D, Db etc, but microtonal changes are a right pain. Of course we usually play in the closest available key (JJF in B I think) Amazing Slower Downer really helps for the learning / play along at home time as changing the tuning is only a click away. You can change tuning and speed up / slow down on the fly so you don't have to wait for the tune to be re-rendered (my personal bugbear with audacity) and its cheap as chips.
Or Best Practice if you use a PC - it's freeware and looks to be virtually the same as the ASD (minus the EQ section).
 24.
He could actually believe that as that's what it was sold to him as. Doubt it but possible
Not a chance - he bought many of the parts on ebay, including the stick on inlays!
 25.
I'm sorry, what? You are seriously saying that Lady Gaga is more "talented" then Ellie Goulding? I cannot believe you can say that Lady Gaga has a) talent and more than other female artists around... Please go and listen to both, show me how Gaga is better, everything she does is manufactured pop rubbish. You can tell she's miming on stage. I'm shocked... Oh and the last year's choice of song for beating x-factor was genius, it finally showed that these stupid TV shows aren't all that music is and that some of us do have taste...
Err... If Lady GaGa is manufactured, she's manufactured herself. As for who is 'better' than who, it's all a matter of opinion. Vive la difference.
