IMHO that's a little on the steep side. I've got a DP300 - I bought it new many years ago, but I've seen the heads go for less than £100 on ebay in the past and the matching cabs don't seem particularly sought after either. I know selling items as 'collection only' on ebay can be a bit of lottery, but someone on here bought a Laney G300 (the follow up to the DP300) and a Hartke 4x10 last year for £150 BIN. I suspect if he'd just stuck a bid in he would have got it for a lot less.

My Status apparently used to belong to Guy Pratt. It appears to be a prototype so it might well be true, though I can't honestly say I'm bothered either way. Thinking about it, I'm not sure I'd be too stoked about about owning any famous players bass.. Maybe Mani's 4005, though I'm not actually a fan of his and would be just as happy with a copy.

Welcome to the forum. Regarding your question about basses, I tried out a bunch of basses in that kind of price range last year when looking for a xmas pressie for a friend's son. Oddly enough the best two I tried were the Dean and Peavey models! I opted for the Dean in the end, even though the Peavey was a bit cheaper and had a very nice neck (very much like a nice example of 70s fender Jazz). I can't really comment too much on the sounds as I tried them in different shops with different amps, but they both sounded in the same ballpark as you might expect with the P/J pickups. It might possibly be a bit of a sideways move rather than an upgrade, though there's always the possibility that you might just prefer the Peavey anyway. The Squier VM Jazz might be up your street at that kind of price - try posting the question in the Bass Guitars section as you'll get more responses there.
i'm not sure about a price as i'm not that experienced with peavey stuff... but i can guarantee that sound to price ration on that thing is sky high. At the moment big stuff just isnt selling. everyone is after lightewight gear. I just had to let one of the best sounding cabs ive ever played through go for very little for that reason. its a shame... but as good as those black widow loaded 2x15's are, they just won't fetch much because we're a nation of weaklings.
+1 I seem to remember that someone on here bought a Mk IV and a 2x15 for £60 last year. I don't think that the price was in any way representative of what they'd usually go for, but these rigs are seriously undervalued. A search of the Amps For Sale forum might give you a better idea, but personally I'd cherish it while your back still holds up.

Google suggests it might be Eddy and the Soul Band. There is at least one remix of this version available, but I don't know which particular version was on Father Ted.
this has always been my favourite and leaves me in awe every single time! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVl39LBZGMw
I love Entwistle but I've got to admit that leaves me stone cold.
+1000 The legendary Andy Fraser on bass. rolleyes.gif It's certainly not very simple - try playing it note perfect with his feel.
Actually you're right about about that. Those bends and vibrato are a complete bugger, especially when you're a puny bassist like myself.

I always liked the solo from Free's live version of Mr Big. Not strictly a solo, but the bass takes over the lead. Very simple but very effective. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGODVQmcEu8 About 4:15 in.
Thanks guys, i might have to sell the EB3 as i'm about to order a bass from Prosebass!
Wow... That might be the quickest bout of BC inspired GAS ever.
After complaining once to HM Customs about charges, which amazingly including an extra freight charge for a carrier to take it to and from customs at the airport, the officer advised that if I had a friend in mainland Europe, I could actually get the guitar sent to them first, re addressed/posted from Europe to me with no UK import tax. Haven't tried it but that may work although possible postage charges may lessen the financial gap.
But your friend would end up being hit for VAT at the local rate when the guitar arrived from the US. Unless they were a diplomat or US serviceman based in the EU.

A Fender Precision that I bought new in 1981. It came with a warped and slightly twisted neck - it didn't actually play that badly, but I didn't mourn for it when it was nicked 6 years later. :Edited to make some sense!:

The £36 threshold is for goods marked as gifts. Ordinary purchases have a threshold of only £18 before VAT becomes due.

Why is the "What do YOU play" topic in Bass Guitars closed?
Musky replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, I'd wondered that as well but had assumed it was because the Basses Owned thread was very similar in its theme and they were both getting quite long. -
Anyone with the older model TKO, there's 2 1/4 jacks that say 'pre out' and power amp in' or similar. Does this mean I can use a DI straight in and bypass the amps EQ section?
Try it and see. I've plugged an 18V active bass into a power amp in socket (it wasn't a Peavey) before and it worked fine, with just the master volume as the only working control. I guess the results you get will depend on the output of your bass though.

Is this a plexi Ric TRC, or a clever fake?
Musky replied to Dave Vader's topic in General Discussion
If I hadn't just bought a very rare Ric I'd be trying to get that off you. In fact if I decide to let my new acquisition go, I might still be trying to get that off you!
Unfortunately this is the bass that falls into my personal 'the one I'll never get rid of' category. Edit: Just out of curiosity, you don't happen to know if 60's Ricks had lower profile frets than later models? As I said the frets are low on mine, very different to early eighties models I've had, and I suspect they were probably worked on at some point. -
I always assumed the 'breathing' a nitro finish allowed was moisture slowly dissipating from the wood over a period of years, whilst a poly finish was like wrapping it in clingfilm, keeping moisture in? Then, after a decade or two, your body would gradually become lighter and more resonant? I do confess to knowing sh*te all about it in honesty, and am prepared to be proved very wrong.
All plastics are porous to some degree, so to an extent they'll all allow the wood to 'breathe'. However wood doesn't just shed moisture as anyone who's subjected an instrument to damp or humid conditions will know. Is the suggestion that instruments will sound great in the Mojave desert and crap in a rain sodden glen? And what happens when your bass picks up scratches, dings or buckle rash? If the wood breathing is so important maybe we should all be stripping back our basses.
It's all smoke and mirrors. The tone of a bass guitar is almost entirely down to the length and type of string, the type of pickup and it's position along and proximity to the string. Everything else has minimal effect.
+1
Yep, all the plexi's I've ever seen (and I've seen a few) are painted. You should get that '68 out. What's the action like?
The action's very low, as are the frets. It's actually set up just as when I got it 27 years ago. I've never touched the the bridge height or truss rod and have always used Rotosounds, which the previous owner evidently used as well. Considering early Ricks are supposed to have problems with the string tension of roundwounds, I'm quite impressed. -
I believe there were; some don't have it. The one in question looks fake to me, but I'm no expert on the 60s ones in particular. Someone on there will know.
I've got a 68 (ish) 4001S and as far as I remember (it's been sitting in it's case for the last year or so) it doesn't have a model number and the 'Made in USA' is parallel to the Rick logo, rather than next to the nut. I've only had the TRC off once, but if I remember correctly it was painted on the back rather than a piece of paper like the OP's. -

I had to google non-idiomatic improvisation. Turns out I've been listening to it for years. And welcome to the forum.
First up, what a cool song, and what a tasty bass tone. Cheers for the link. Being an oldster, I'd not heard of these, so thanks for the intro. As far as tone's concerned I'd agree with what pretty much everyone else has said. You really need a 'Ray for that sound, and secondly, unless your amp is super, hifi clean, just digging in hard will get you close. If your amp is clean and your budget won't stretch to the sansamp I'll risk a flaming by suggesting the Boss ODB-3, on a lightish overdrive setting with plenty of treble. There's plenty of people out there that wouldn't piss on a flaming ODB-3, but I reckon they actually have some pretty tasty sounds in them, including something quite close to that one....
+1 I really enjoyed that as well. Two thoughts occurred to me about his sound: 1) he's really digging in (plenty of fret buzz in evidence) 2) There's not a great deal of deep bass in there. The second point might be explained by this picture - not really sure the 'Ray is entirely necessary! The pedal in evidence seems to be a Zvex Mastotron, though god knows what he's using here (it's a boss tuner on the right, no idea about the other two). It has some similarities to Jon's Kasuga, so that be my guess. We'll have to wait for the man himself for a positive ID.

SWR gear is well known for it's mid scoop, and that might be throwing you a bit - certainly threw me. It means that when you leave you tone controls flat you're not getting anything like a flat frequency response. Add to that the fact that the aural enhancer can increase that mid scoop and you get a tone section that isn't that intuitive. I've got a Workingmans combo and the limiter LED lights up all the time. It does pretty much what the label suggests, limiting the peak output to prevent damage to your speakers. It very subtle in operation and isn't noticeable in operation - I leave mine on all the time.
