1.
I thought this sort of price fixing was illegal these days? I know Marshall did it some years ago and got told to stop. Why should TC care what a shop sells stuff for anyhow? They've already made their money off it. A
Sadly not, as far as I'm aware. Channel have vociferously protected the price of their perfumes with the argument (tested in court) that discounting devalues the actual brand. Levis, and I'm sure others, have followed the same tack. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_goods
  2.
Someone in my city (Leicester) is selling both a Thunder II bass, and a Thunder III bass, both with hard cases. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MIJ-Westone-Thunder-...=item3f004f2374 I won't be bidding as (i) I'm sure they'll go for more than I'm prepared to pay, and (ii) I gave this month's guitar buying budget money to my partner to help with dental bills. So, I'm stuck at a big fat £0 budget again. But it's interesting to see them turn up locally.
Another basschater, no less. 3.
Hi Everyone! Could anyone tell me if it's possible to upload, or attach, an mp3 file. I think this would be a very good way to share ideas and opinions. It would be good if we could listen to what other players like...and listen to... What they think is good... or bad! What do you think? V.
You can add attachments by uploading a file and then clicking on the Manage Current Attachments drop down box.
  4. Use a metronome and play at a slower speed than the original, speeding things up only when you're certain you're playing all the notes in time. If you want to jam along to the track download Best Practice and slow things down using that. You don't have to tap your feet - nodding is just as useful for getting into the groove. You should really be using your little finger as well.
  5.
Or, indeed, from here: Sid Vicious CIJ P Bass for sale
Oooh... that's very nice. Good price too.

    Intro..

Hi Mark. I've found Gumtree to be good for musicians ads, but there are a number of other sites like partysounds and joinmyband that others have found to be useful.
  7. Just a thought, but there used to be a guy in the market near me who had a computer controlled laser etching machine. He was using it to etch pretty much anything that people wanted. As far as I remember, what was etched was just letters in a choice of fonts, but I'm sure these things could be set up to do pictures (or logos!). And the etching on the examples he had to show was pretty deep, not just the fairly shallow sort that you usually see on jewellery. I'm sure there are plenty of other people about who offer the same sort of service.
  8. Can't help with the looping videos bit, but Download Helper for Firefox will download the videos. There are also plenty of online sites that will download them for you if you'd prefer not to use Firefox.
  9. "The door price will go up to £8" Wonder if he's ever played at Water Rats?
  10.
Thanks Jon, I read the Serial-No. like you, it's definitely the capitol letter 'I'. And the follwed 77... states the year as you said, because it's in my posession since 79 – bought private. About my whereabout: I'm german and this bass was bought in Germany which matches to your guess: 'Anyway, I'd be 99% certain it was an Ibanez - in Europe/the UK.....'. And as you mentioned the pics are really great, typical RIC-Sound. But the bridge Pup frame needs to get a new chrome finish, my sweat might be a bit to agressive. And the checkered binding is accurately made it is even interrupted under the tail bridge which is a specification of an original RIC. The back-screened truss rod plexi cover was on it (I didn't change anything on that bass) and it's made the way Rickenbacker used it these days, as far as I know. So I'm wondering if one could get a plate seperately with 'Made in USA'? So, almost everything's clear. Thanks again, Gunnar
The checkered binding is actually slightly different to a real Rick. On the genuine article the black dots butt right up to the painted wings, where as on your one the dots are surrounded by white. I don't think you'll have much luck in finding a rick style truss rod cover with 'made in USA' on it. There was a guy in Italy who was selling Rick type TRC's with raised lettering, but they didn't have the model number or Made in USA on them. And of course Rickenbacker won't provide you with one unless you exchange your old one. Your best bet would be to make something up yourself, or get someone else to do it for you.
  11. Let us know how you get on. Which one are you going for - the Aero?
  12.
Well, I have to admit, this whole are of creating clones just hadn't occured to me at all. Where does that leave us with the usefulness of serial numbers when items are being sold?
Personally I don't see the point of obscuring serial numbers unless there's a central registry, like with car number plates. It' would be easier enough for a scammer just to make up a serial if he understood how they worked - i.e. faking a 78 Fender with the serial S812345. They wouldn't have to know an actual number of a bass that's in existence, because nobody knows all the numbers that were used.
  13.
I have the book of john entwistle's bass collection... he has a rickenbacker bass model 31 which is what this is based on. Looks lovely too! Or the 4005
I didn't know Entwistle had used one of these. Then again he seems to have owned virtually every model of bass ever made, so it should come as no surprise. Are some digits missing from that model number? Edit: I've just realised that you said he owned the Rickenbacker version - I'll have to take back what I said about him owning every model of bass.
  14. It's not actually a reproduction of a bass, but it's based on the 330 guitar. The fact that rickenbacker never produced a bass like this doesn't seem to stop Mr. Hall pulling the auctions though.
  15.
Hi Jon, thanks for responding that promptly and clearly. I will post some detailed images but not today because I've got to run a gig first, this time with my brown 76 US made Precision which is not a bad one.
Brown? Is that a refin?
  16.
Hey thanks... It sounds complicated though, iv been trying to figure it out for nearly 2 week my lugs dont work haha. Thats why i came for some advice on here
Try Best Practice or the Amazing Slow Downer. Slow it down enough and you should be able to nail pretty much anything.
  17. That's strange - I didn't notice that the 10a I played had a longer scale, so I turned to google. It seems that even Dean seem a little confused as they have two pages for the 10a, one stating a 34" scale and the other 35"! http://www.deanguitars.com/e10APJ_basses.php http://www.deanguitars.com/dean_winter_09/Edge10A_PJ.htm Maybe they've changed the specs in the last few months?
  18. Oddball factoid: I once saw Jack Bruce playing a gig with a wall of these behind him. Never played one myself but they can't be too shabby for JB to want to cart that many about...
  19. Have you tried loosening the screw that holds the centre of the gear slightly?
  20.
There aren't any black-bound copies, as far as I know, certainly not from the 70s era because there were no black-bound 4001s to copy. This is the same "modified" one that's popped up a few times in the last couple of months: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4001-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ270563145415 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4001-BASS-GUITAR_W0QQitemZ270568782343 And old Uncle Ash is trying to flip it for a poxy £50 profit - or more like £15 after Ebay Tax. It must be a total dog. J.
I notice he's changed the truss rod cover as well. Doubtless that will be up for sale before too long.
  21. Not tab, but a decent excuse to learn the dots - clicky. Edit: Actually, just looking at the whole thing it's clear that's not a complete transcription of what the bass player is doing - pretty much like every tab I've every seen. Still, it's a start.
  22.
Is the Dean Edge 10a any good?
The one I tried was. The neck was a typical Precision width but very slim back to front - it was far better than the Squier Classic Vibe I tried, though I suspect that the CV just needed a set up. Apparently my friend's son's bass tutor likes it as well. I can't really comment on the sound of it though, as I was playing through an unfamiliar amp in unfamiliar circumstances, but there was nothing that stood out as obviously bad.
Or maybe this? http://www.fairdealmusic.com/guitars/bass_...e-series-z-bass
If you can live with the looks.
  23. I don't think you'd do too badly with any of the basses you've mentioned, though of course the set up and build quality can vary hugely with budget instruments. It's well worth your while to have a quick try of the actual bass you're going to buy, even if it means paying a little more in a shop. For what it's worth, I went shopping for a bass for a friend's son just before xmas and was very impressed by the feel and playability of the Zodiac even though I usually prefer a wider neck than it's Jazz-like profile. In the end I decided on a Dean Edge 10a for him, in part because I thought he'd prefer the looks. Incidentally, I've just realised the Zodiac I tried had two pickups in a P-J configuration. That's something else to bear in mind - starter packs often have basses that are actually cheaper variations of the instrument that is sold on it's own.
  24.
I know you're tongue in cheek Si, but of course I'm not. What I would like to know is whether anyone has any ways of getting around this whilst retaining the joints, or at least, whilst appearing to? If not, no worries, I'll go ahead anyway, but if so, all the better. Where's the Bass Doc when you need him eh! Cheers Chris
I believe you can age solder joints. Can't remember exactly how though - maybe using acid. I'm not sure, it's just something I vaguely remember seeing in relation to instruments that have been faked to look completely original.
  25.
A true 62 re-issue JV would have reverse-turning machine heads and a spiral bridge. Thinking I am the seller p!ss taking he is.
Yeah, it's a Japanese domestic model rather than the more accurate ones which were exported. Though in truth the JVs were never sold as reissues so I think he's just trying to hit a few keywords.
