Whilst that is true it is not really significant. The extra decibels from the extra cab are what counts. Remember volume is measured in decibels, not watts.
Yeah, you're quite right John. I was more concerned that the OP seemed to believe that because the cab was rated at 250w, that was the power he'd be drawing from the amp.

Someone posted up the picture on talkbass after seeing it advertised somewhere. It was only up for $100, so predictably after he'd made his enquiries the bass had sold.

Not for sale on ebay, but it may as well go in here to keep the 'fakers together. I came across a Swedish brand called Eagle which appears to be the same a the things sold as Anniversary in the UK. Nothing particularly unusual in that, as instruments are often rebranded at the importers discretion. More interesting is the fact that the same brand has been used on what appears to be a 4001S through neck. Obviously it's been modded, but it still bears little in common with the more modern 4001's bearing the same brand. Anyone come across these before and any idea on the factory? So... how would you go about removing varnish from a neck?
Musky replied to JamieBenzies's topic in Bass Guitars
Blue tack is very good for removing any stray metal filings that end up attached to your pole pieces. -
the grey stuff I used came from a now sadly closed-down hardware shop (turtles in Croydon). Iti similar to but a lot finer than the green bit of kitchen scourers and is sold as an alternative to wire wool.
Cheers. I don't think I've seen that about. I'll have to keep an eye out next time I'm in a decent hardware shop. -
I recently did this to a few of my basses (& a couple of guitars) - It makes a great difference. I used grey scotchbrite equivalent to fine wire wool.
Are these the green kitchen scourers you're talking about here, or is it another of their products? -
The Dillions seem to be the same as the ones branded Indie in the UK, albeit with a more authentic headstock.
ahh nice one mate I was just wondering because I dont particularly like 115's. especially on their own. too boomy and thick for what i want. well, i guess a second 4x10 would never hurt anyone! but, would it be worth it? my amp atm is a 300w output, but the 410 I have with it atm is 250w (I think) so would adding another 410 even be worth it?
Just a thought but assuming the cab you're using is 8 ohms, your 300w head is only going to be knocking out something in the region of 200w. So adding another 8 ohm cab will give you the full 300w as well as the increased sensitivity Bill noted, i.e. a worthwhile increase in volume.
That's the problem - there isn't one! Which is why most discussions like this (and there are lots) are either random or take place in the JapCrap Spotting sticky on the Fleabay board. Is there enough demand for a specific JapCrap sub-forum, or at least a JapCrap Discussion sticky? J.
You ought to have your own affiliates forum Jon!
I'm not really getting the Squier CV love - they look pretty cool, but the two I've tried in shops have been badly set up and sounded rubbish acoustically compared to a US or the Mex Classic 70s jazz. I know that's not the whole story but I do think when looking for a classic jazz bass sound the wood is an important contributor, and basswood or agathis don't really do it. I think these are alright basses but no better than budget offerings from Yamaha, Ibanez etc. The VM 70s, though, sounded much more like it. Tone plugged in was nice and growly but rather restricted in bandwidth, so my conclusion was that with a pickup upgrade it could be a very good sounding bass. However, again I tried two and both suffered nasty fret buzz and had poor finishing on the necks, though the bookmatching on the body was lovely. If you can live with the weight (heavy) and find one with a decent neck, then these are the most 'jazzy' sounding budget basses I've heard - and therefore IMO the best! *But not as good as a US.
I've got to admit I was a bit disappointed with the CV Jazz I played last month when looking for a bass for a friend's son. Although it felt like a nice bit of kit in my hands the action was quite poor really. Admittedly it hadn't been set up (which the shop said they'd do if I wanted it), but the Dean I walked out with actually played much better and cost a third less

With the work need, £225? I'm a little wary of basses that need just a 'quick MOT' to get playing as they should though. If it's an easy job why hasn't it been done yet? Having owned one of Fender's 70's lemons, I tend to not to assume that everything will be fine with a quick set up.
I eventually got round to getting the Hondo II Rickenbacker copy fixed up at a music shop in Stockport. It sounds really good the action on it very good indeed. It's a shame the machine heads/tuners are a bit cheap as the tuning is nowhere near as reliable as my Jazz bass. Still, I'm pleased with it and with a set of Elixirs on it and cleaned up it's looking good. Out of curiosity, what would a bass like this be worth these days? I believe it is the same model used by Peter Hook in the early Joy Division days.
A year ago you probably would have safely got £300 for it. Nowadays I'm not so sure - the 'fakers that survive to the finish on ebay more recently don't seem to be fetching as much. I'm not sure if it's the recession or whether 4001's aren't flavour of the month anymore.

I've got a VA350 which was the predecessor to the Hexa. It's quite odd in that it's got two preamps - an all valve jobbie sans tone controls and the standard GP11. You can route the two together if that takes your fancy. It's also allows you to switch the power down to as little as 80w if you really like the sound of hard driven tubes. Anyone know if the Quadra has the same switching capabilities?
Have you thought about just adding an extension cab? This will mean your amp is giving out its full power(as long as its an 8 ohm cab) and youll get a much bigger spread and more bottom end. I reckon a MAG 210 cab would make a huge difference and wouldnt cost you much
+1 Another cab should give you both more volume and better low end.

So this guy eats up your time at no cost to himself, swallows a load of bullsh1t about it not being designed for a low action, and then goes out of his way to let you have a piece of his mind? Just satisfy yourself with the knowledge that the guy's a c*ock of the highest order.

It doesn't get a whole lot weirder than this

If he can't find anything about them he's not looking very hard. http://www.cheesyguitars.com/jolana_basso9.html I've got a Jolana Kolorbas and though it does make quite nice 60's hollow body type sounds and plays well enough, the build quality is fairly ropey. -
Is this worth as much as is being asked for? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Westone-thunder-1A-f...=item439c2a8931
Good grief. That actually sold for £275. Either someone desperately want a black fretless 1A, or it's misplaced shill bidding gone wrong. -
74 jazz identification issues. Now with more photo's.
Musky replied to karlfer's topic in Bass Guitars
Lots of seventies Fenders have missing dates codes on the neck, so nothing to worry about there. The 'ARM' bit is probably Xavier Armenta, who would have been the guy who worked on the neck. Sounds like you've got a refinished Jazz with a final assembly date of 1975. -
No answers yet? If it were me I'd probably be looking to buy used. The old Trace Elliot stuff was bullet proof and certainly had plenty of control over the tone on tap. For that kind of money you could probably pick up a complete stack, which should be big enough not to look silly!
Ive just looked at the SPEAKON efforts on ebay. That is what im using at the moment. Its a Speakon connector that goes into the cab (turns and locks) then a single Jack that goes into the amp. So you think the cab may need rewiring to work with a 'normal' bass head?
I'm guessing that the speakon in that cab has more than the two poles usually found in cabs. I think I'm right in saying that GK use 4 pole connections for their Bi amp connections, but since the BFC can be arranged as 250w a side stereo 10" and bi amped with the 15", there must be more poles than standard. The speakon to jack you're using is only going to give a standard two pole output, regardless of what type of speakon the BFC is fitted with.
-
Hmmm... From the manual for the matching AH1000:
There is a further speaker output provided with the SPEAKON connector on the extreme right side of the amplifier. This is for use only with the special Stereo Bi-Amp cabinet ( called the BFC ) that has been designed to operate exclusively with the AH1000 to provide a full stereo bi-amp speaker configuration in one cabinet with the only interconnection required being this one SPEAKON socket. This special cabinet can operate in FULL RANGE MONO, or FULL RANGE STEREO, in BI- AMP MONO or BI-AMP STEREO merely by using the OUTPUT MODE switches on the AH1000. This has reduced what used to be a nightmare of interconnections using external power amplifiers and probably four cabinets to a single amplifier head ( the AH1000 ) with a single connection ( 1 x SPEAKON ) to a single cabinet ( the BFC ).
I'm not sure how they are handling that amount of options via a single speakon, but it should be an easy job to replace the existing speakon and rewire the cab for full range operation.
-
Weren't the BFC's intended for bi amping? I'd have expected to see two inputs on the cab, unless it's using a 4 pole speakon.
The new ashdown mini tube amp looks good, but after calling it the little bastard, where is there left to go if they want to do a more extreme version? Will they eventually have a range of amps called the 'kick in the b*lls', 'motherf**ker' & the 'utter c**t'?
I think Ashdown have already got that one covered!
Yep, you keep the excess whether its from ticket sales or on the door. We didn't get enough people along :-(
Not too shabby if you can can get 50+ along then - though that can be a big ask in London. I was half expecting that they'd be asking for a slice of the total sales.
Well Bugbear have kindly offered us 24th Jan at Dublin Castle. Is it a decent venue? We'll probably take it anyway mind
It decent enough - smallish black painted room at the back of a pub basically. Being a well established venue in an area know for it's venues is probably the best thing going for it though.
