1.
Saying that, my fondest memory of Hawkwind was the naked dancer with the big norks.
Why am I not surprised?
 2. Looks like a green Big Muff, Boss Octaver and a TU-2 in this shot. http://www.popmusicology.com/userimages/user-386203_1170288368.JPG Nice sound he has in that clip.
 3.
So you're ok with the metallic blue Squier paint showing through beneath the top coat?
Hmmm... hadn't noticed that. It'll look a lot worse when it gets some genuine wear on the top coat as well. Oh well, at least blue and green go together.
 4.
More melody lines. Think The Jam, think Red Hot Chilli Peppers, think The Who - the bass keeps constant melodies, which fills out the sound. Think of those bands again, but imagine them using root-note basslines - suddenly the music is a lot less full. Don`t try to be overcomplicated, but work on small hooks and riffs which can be repeated. In effect, in cases like this, the rhythm guitar can end up doing the basses job, and the bass becomes the melody instrument.
^ This. It's not just 3 piece bands you should be taking cues from, but 4 piece bands with just the one guitarist as well. There are plenty of ways you could conceivably fill in to make up for the absence of the extra guitarist, and how you approach it is going to depend on your band and style of music. Geezer Butler and John Entwistle are miles apart in terms of style but both approaches worked within the context of their band. There's going to be no easy fix all to finding what's going to work within your band, but hard thinking about what actually needs requires filling in and what might be better with a simpler more laid back approach will pay dividends. Interesting that most people have suggested buying some more kit though. No change there then. Edit: Hillbilly Deluxe beat me to it, and much more succinctly too!
 5. You should just be happy it didn't date from the early eighties. Some real horrors went on under the pickguard on those things.
 6. I've only just taken a look at this and really IMHO it's not that bad. Sure, the back of the neck looks really off and the whole 'grime' thing seems quite pointless (I'm sure even Gallagher's strat got a wipe over every now and then), but I've seen far worse relic jobs. It's nowhere near the efforts of those who are at the top of their game, but if he improved the 'wear' on the back of the neck and did away with the grime it'd be a fair effort. It's much better than some of the Fender Custom Shop relics I've seen...
 7.
Here you go, these are identical to mine. Mine are in much better condition, although obviously more cream [s]dis[/s]coloured.
They look exactly like mine as well, though mine don't have the PAF stickers. And those ones haven't had one of the magnets just fall off...
 8.
I have very strong feeling about this, since I've been put in the situation by other musicians before, but my view is that, if you're not prepared to be in the band any more then you don't deserve to be on any proposed forthcoming releases. This is more important than ever since there is potentially money involved for the ex-members through the PPL.
+1 I know things can happen and a player can feel compelled to leave at any point, but it really grinds my gears that there seem to a significant number of players who think 'I'm going to leave, but I'll hang about just long enough to get my name on an album'. Sod 'em. Just wipe their parts and start afresh with a new player.
 9.
Hondos are odd, some of them are really nice well made things, others are bits of plywood sh*te, I have had bolt on manky Les Paul copies made of ply, and I at one point had a lovely mahogany set-neck one. Bloody brilliant it was, shame I moved it on. (both had the excellent DI-Marzios though).
I've got to admit, I thought 'Hondo' when I saw it. I seem to remember Jon saying that Hondo were knocking out some good quality basses in the early eighties. If I didn't dream it, it'll probably be buried in this thread somewhere. I do remember him saying that there were DiMarzio copies about though, so despite the hex adjustable pole pieces they might not be the real McCoy. I've got an old DiMarzio P pickup knocking about somewhere, so if you want something to compare yours to I'll dig it out.
 10. If it's pre '76 it'll have no serial number on the headstock and a serif font for the 'Precision Bass' lettering. The neck code isn't guaranteed to be visible as they had a habit of fading. If the parts are all original it can't be later than the last date available from the neck, pot or pickup codes. Try checking your bass against the timeline in another thread - http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=128339&view=findpost&p=1171344 I really must get round to finishing that off sometime.
 11. It looks very similar to an Aria A100, which was manufactured by Matsumoku, and these appear with loads of different brands on the headstock. I don't think it's the same bass though - Mats had three piece necks for a start. Soopercrip's would have been an A200, or at least an equivalent.
 12.
That one is lsited on here, for more money, so is a BCer but not one who actually uses the forum, or understands the concept of lsiting free on BC = sell cheaper than ebay: http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1
Ahh, that'd be where I saw it then.
 13. I always find it irritating when non-musos describe my playing as 'crap'. An experienced musician would more accurately describe it as 'really crap'.
 14. An Ibanez with the listing not being nearly clever enough to avoid it getting pulled. I think it's been up before with exactly the same description. http://www.ebay.co.u...3-/120794931359
 15.
I once used one to hold the exhaust together on a Bedford Astra van, worked a treat.
It must be something about old Bedfords - I did exactly the same thing with a Bedford CF. Top tip - use the E string as a G will melt! As for the bracelet idea, I knew a guy who did just that. He also threaded different size and colour ball ends onto old guitar strings to make various other bits of jewellery as well.
 16.
In this video, he uses a precision, probably a fender, but what im most interested in is how the amber tint next to the frets got there. I think it looks dam cool, but have never seen anything else like it.
Like this? It seems to me that it's where the lacquer has come away and has got dirt into the pores of the wood. Quite what's caused it is anyone's guess though. Maybe it had a ham fisted fret job at some point?
 17. A bit weird that it's got lollipop tuners, though I suppose there's nothing really that weird about a Fender that has features it's not supposed to.
 18. Hmm... someone could have had a real bargain on this. Ended at 99p with no bids! It's back up with a 99p start again - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Collection-Fretless-Guitar-White-Hard-Case-/220875259916
 19.
How would a baseball player help? Only messing. My first bass was a Vox Standard which picking up now, is probably the heaviest bass I've ever come across (I'm sure it's made of cement). Most kids aren't gonna worry about weight. Charic's advice is good though, get him to a shop to try a few out. Maybe here? Clicky linky.
I think the Bass Centre is only an online shop nowadays. Maybe The Gallery in Camden would be a better bet.
 20. Jon would probably have had your arm off for this, as I know he's a fan of 'snot-glo'! It's a Matsumuku made bass (the manufacturer that made for Aria, amongst others). If the serial starts 00 it'll be pre '75, as that's when Mat started using sequential serials - before that they were random, so not much good for dating the bass. For any more than that, you'll probably have to wait for Jon to come out of retirement.
 21.
Dont think this one can be unplugged. What about using the FX send on Eden and return on the peavey to drive it?
That would work.
 22.
"Tokai" http://www.ebay.co.u...=item20bd9cf02d Asked him where he gets the 'Tokai' idea from, apparently he has 'done research' and Tokai don't advertise the basses they apparently make so they don't get sued, aside from all the other copies they make.
I think it may have been mentioned before, but I noticed the other day that the Bass Centre (where the Rockinbetters seem to have first popped up) are now selling identical basses under their Bass Collection brand. I wonder if the change was so they didn't get sued.
 23. Prices on 'fakers seem to have been headed south recently unfortunately. Not so long ago you didn't often see one go for less than £300, but there have been tidy looking examples going in the low 200's on ebay (when they manage to evade the Rickenwaffen!). I might try for £325 to see if anyone bites, but be prepared to drop or hang in there for the long haul. If you're going to ebay it be aware that John Hall is all over 'faker auctions, so any use of the 'R' word or any of it's derivatives massively ups the chances of it being pulled. It's usually good to include a phone number or email and encourage people to use it - that way if the auctions magically disappears you'll have a record of interested parties. It might be worth giving Ash a shout, as he's bought and sold (or at least attempted to ) quite a few.
 24.
The Cramps.
My first thought when I saw the thread title as well, even if it was just the early stuff!
 25.
?
It means +1, I agree, you are absolutely correct, etc.
