I've just bought an SFX Bad Monkey from Bob, and he was thoroughly pleasant to deal with. No nasty surprises when it arrived so I'm jolly pleased all round. Thanks Bob.
Very true. But my point is that it has nothing to do with cone diameter & more to do with the cab & how much air is being moved.
Ah, gotcha. In that case, +1.
The Markbass standard 2x10 & 1x15 both have the same frequency range - 40hz - 20khz, so this kinda shows that Marshall are just going for sales.
So are Markbass. Stating '40hz - 20khz' is pretty meaningless without knowing how many dB that's accurate to. Though they already know that.

Try giving Wembley Loudspeakers a shout. If they're available I'm sure they can get (and fit) them for you. Before you do it might be worth your time checking over the speakers. Off the top of my head I can remember people here having problems which they assumed was a damaged cone, and which turned out to be something inside the cab touching the speaker, and someone who found a small screw that had attached itself to the magnet. Cheaper than a recone!
Thanks all for your technical input. I don't normally have to think about how it works - Ijust like to make a lot of noise! Out of interest will the addition of the second cab give me any more volume or will the output simply be shared between the two cabs?
If you add a second identical cab (i.e. another Ashdown 410) the extra speaker area alone will give you another 3dB. Add to that the extra 100w or so halving the impedance will give you, and you're looking at about 5dB more volume. The power will be shared by the two cabs, but you'll still end up with more power and be pushing each cab less hard.
Speaker efficiency and voicing. The Peavey is probably much middlier. If you can rig it, compare the amp into the other speaker section.
^ This. Plus if the TNT is 150w it's putting that out into it's internal speaker (4 ohms). The Ashdown is going to be knocking out about 200w into the 8 ohm 410, so the extra wattage is going to be completely inaudible. So it's mostly likely down to the speakers used.
Could an ashdown 300w head http://www.antonesguitars.com/ashdown-mag-...-head-716-p.asp support a 4x10 cabinet (ashdown) seeing as the 4x10 is probably alot more wattage than 300w, i don't know much about amps. Does this 300w mean thats the limit you can plug in?
The simple answer to the first question is 'yes'. In answer to your second question, you've got things about face. 300w is the maximum the amp will put out, regardless of the wattage the speakers are rated at. The current MAG 410's are rated at 450w, so that's the maximum wattage they'll take for an extended period without melting the voice coil. Plugging 450w speakers into a 300w amp won't make the amp produce 450w. In fact since the MAG 410 is an 8 ohm cab, and the amp will be rated at 300w into a 4 ohm load, the amp will actually be putting out about 200w into the cab. So you'll be safe using the MAG 300 and 410 together. Might be worth taking a look at the wiki as well. I notice the OP has an Ibanez Musician - Jack Natz out of Cop Shoot Cop used to use one of those. It's horses for courses, whatever fits...

The cheapest Streamer Stage II I've ever seen!
Musky replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Let's just say it involved a delivery of a large amount of equine waste to 'my' home address when I wasn't in!
Brilliant! -
It would work, but you'd be dissipating plenty wattage in the form of heat. A lot of it - the spec sheet gives the max temperature as 358 C. Some sort of fan might be in order. Or just get a second 8 ohm cab.
-
Thanks for the detailed explanations, Musky. Is it the same for hybrid valve/transistor heads or are their valves totaly isolated from the output ? I suppose I might have to get another 8 Ohm cab and wire the two in parallel if I want to stick to the VBA400... or get another head (or a low impedance cab...)
It only applies to valve output stages. Amps with only a valve preamp are not affected. It might be worth having a word with Marshall - it's possible the output transformer might have an 8 ohm tap which isn't used. Unlikely, but you never know.
-
Hi guys, I own an Ampeg SVT-15E cab which is rated at 8 ohms. Originally, I was going to get an SVT head but actually, I quite fancy the Marshall VBA400 which is all tube and has selectable output of 1, 2 or 4 Ohms. I know it's probably a question which has been asked a thousand times and I do know that, in theory, I should be ok running the 8 Ohms cab with this head; however people seem more cautious about impedance mismatch when it comes to all-tube heads. Do you think I would be ok running my SVT15 with the all-tube VBA400 ? If not, has someone got an idea why ? Is it because of resonance issues due to the inductive load, or something else... ? Thanks
You should definitely NOT run an amp with a valve output stage at a higher impedance than intended. With transistor amps you're fine to run a cab with with a higher impedance than the amp's minimum load (typically 4 ohms). All that happens is that the amp will output a lower wattage into the cab. Valves are very different - they have a very high output impedance (thousands of ohms), and need an output transformer to match them to the comparatively low impedance of a speaker. They also run very hot and at high voltages. Running them into a higher impedance than intended will mean the valves will produce a higher voltage to drive the load and get even hotter. Not good for valves at all. If the voltage gets too high you can expect arcing to occur anywhere along the high voltage path. Result? Destroyed valves/valve bases/output transformer. The worst case scenario would be running the amp with no load connected (or a broken speaker lead) which presents the amp with an infinite load. The magic smoke will very quickly appear. Depending on the tolerances of the valves and design of the amp you might get away with running the amp on the 4 ohm tap into an 8 ohm load for a while, but the valves will run hotter and have a shorter lifespan. And as I'm sure you know, revalving a big amp can be an expensive business.

At least we can be certain it's not a Telecaster.
Such a simple thing, to be honest.Someone actually sent me a message about that, but I thought it indicated shouting or something 10 years ago.But I dont think its all that important. At my age, seeing the screen is tasking enough.Big letters help, as you need good eye sight to see out of these Jamjars!!!lol
Welcome to the forum! Nice collection of gear you've got there. Re the caps thing: We tend to read by looking at the shape of words rather than the actual letters, and using all caps actually makes it harder to see the shape of the words. Might seem counter-intuitive, but I did have some trouble reading your intro.
I just happen to have a Hiwatt 200 Custom Bass Amp head, and its an early 80's Model. From what I believe, these amps reach a good price and sought after. But I'm not that sure, as anyone that put a price on it were talking in the £1300 region.I would'nt have thought you'd have hit that price for it.They were quotes, and I'm sure if they'd have been buying, it may have been a different story. Why do these amps get such a price, when recent gear, having less use, dont seem to get the price.?Just an observation, and would invite any opinions on same. Cheers.
It's the urban myth that every ebay seller relies on: It's old, so it must be amazing. As it happens though, old Hiwatt stuff was built to ridiculously high standards. All the electronics were handwired to military specs. There's a Hiwatt site that goes into all the details if you're interested. Edit: http://hiwatt.org/ is the site I was referring to.
What's a tug bar?
It served the same sort of purpose as a thumb rest, only it was positioned below the strings. The idea was you'd use it to anchor your fingers and pluck the strings with your thumb. Only nobody actually played like that, so Fender actually got round to moving it somewhere useful, albeit very late in the day.
Here's the one. It has some odd antigua-like finish, so possibly a late 70's job? Then again, the tugbar is in the 60's position, so scratch that! I'll leave it to the experts
That was his infamous green bass, the one which he reckoned he could never find another to replicate it's tone. It's also the one that his Shuker custom model is based on. You don't get a good look at it in the video but the tug bar and tortoise shell guard would make it 1974 or earlier. At the time Fender just made the one Precision model - no standards, deluxes, squiers or any other such nonsense. One size fitted all!
