1. Peels Away 7 might do the job, though it'd probably be best to check with the manufacturers to check that it won't damage the anodising.
 2.
I'd be buggered if I'd ever spend 1K on a new Precision! Hang out for a S/H Japanese one and save yourself a lot of money.
+1! MIJs are at least the equal of MIAs and a damn sight cheaper. I've not tried an MIM myself but from comments on the forum quality control seems to be a bit more variable. I think I'd have to try the actual one I was buying if I was looking for an MIM myself, but I'd be happy enough to take a punt on a MIJ without laying hands on it first.
 3. I think Bloodaxe has well and truly hit the nail on the head here. Mr Higginbotham seems to have been quite active on various blogs and has commented "Robert Higginbotham/Tommy Tucker estate has been omitted from the payment process for his copyrighted works and the copyright laws seem to support those activities with Congress’ approval….." Although I feel for the guy I've got to wonder why he's issuing cease and desist letters when he seems to know he has no financial stake in the royalties.
 4.
what modifications????????? Its you thats talking about this scam about voltage changes that nobody has ever heard about and lets face it is possibly the most elaborate scam with the least amount of return for alot of work!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this honestly a scam or is it something you have worked out to make this sour deal not look so bad on you?
Ahem...
Right guys. Now Geesters got involved in the thread I'm going to leave it open. But I would respectfully suggest that both parties find a solution by PM. If I get up in the morning and the thread's gone down the pan, I'm going to close it. While I personally think it's good that members are warned about deal's gone bad, I don't really want General Bass Discussion turned into an arena for slagging matches about problem deal's.
5.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is it worth getting a tech to confirm the "US voltage" amp can't work in both countries? It seems strange to me that the seller offered to let people try it at his house in the original ad. There might just be a possibility that you're both right. Cheers Mark
+1 Just a thought here, but it may be that Geester's thread was simply a way of canvassing opinion about possibly being scammed himself. Scenario: He's been happily using an amp without any problems, sells it and then receives an email saying that it's a US amp and won't work with UK voltages. Only of course this runs contrary to his own experience. So, having found out that the OP travels a lot, concludes that the scam outlined in his post may be being perpetrated. Having come to the conclusion that a scam is in operation, Oldman's request that the amp is returned before any refund is made is treated with scepticism. We've no way of knowing what is actually going on here, but it seems to me that if the scam Geester described was an attempt to muddy the waters it was a particularly lame one. To my mind, something along the lines of the above scenario makes more sense. Geester's input is needed here, preferably via PM with Oldman, and if necessary perhaps an intermediary could be found to ease any qualms either party might have over being the first to make an exchange (if indeed it is deemed necessary). Edit: I really need to learn to type faster!
 6.
My hypothesis based on these comments is.... Because I don't like this particular brand of music and you do,I do not appreciate music as art. That's the impression I get.Am I right? I watched those clips, and thought that it was a couple of young guys who probably hadn't been playing for long and were playing in front of their mates. To me it sounded sloppy and amateurish.
Yep, I think they sound sloppy and amateurish as well. But then again, if I could have recorded one song it would be The Kingsmen's version of Louie Louie. That's as sloppy and amateurish as they come. Sometimes it's just part of the aesthetic.
 7.
Mine has 'Made in Japan' written on the cavity cover just underneath where it says 'Produced by SGC Nanyo'. I guess that is the main clue - despite that sounding facetious it isn't meant to be

Well, give the man James at Bristol Guitars his due : I sent him a message and he's amended the listing to remove the comments about it being Japanese. Besides the missing Made in Japan on the electrics cover and the model number, the serial number is wrong (it starts 00, SGC Nanyo the first two digits were the year of manufacture and they stopped in 1996). The other thing that struck me as odd was the electrics: all the pots and all the electronics are fitted to a single circuit board. All the SGCs I've ever seen had individual pots with bits of circuit board attached to them, and connected up with some wiring (and some fairly dodgy soldering).
Ahh, now I remember Jon's first law of JapCrap: it has Made in Japan written on it! Still, I didn't realise that the newer creations were going out under the SGC Nanyo brand. I knew there was some kind of dispute over the Nanyo name, but thought that the new ones were just using the Bass Collection name with no other connection. Good to know so thanks for the heads up.
 8.
SGC Nanyo Bass Collection , Made in Japan. Except this isn't made in Japan at all, it's a later (probably Chinese) copy. Be careful out there. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=250798115622
I've got to admit I'm not that up on Bass Collections at all and might have been fooled by that. From the big thread on SGC Nanyo I remember that the serials were supposed to be tucked away in the control cavity and all the model names began SB3**, but the fact that SGC is plastered over the pickups would have had me convinced. So how can you tell it's a copy?
 9.
What a load of old bollocks!
Horses for courses I suppose. They're an amazing prospect live - chaotic, frenzied and exhilarating.
 10.
Thank you for the recognition - but the flaw inherent in that solution is that much of my massive, gushing fountain of hot & sticky but ultimately useless information is backed up by a library of links to websites such as Westone.info! To be honest this seems incomprehensible and somewhat spiteful to me - even if he didn't want to continue maintaining the site, he could have left it up - or alternatively there are plenty of people with spare web space who could have hosted it. If I'd known I would've offered, I run a couple of other sites & the Westone one wasn't a physically big resource. Bollocks. Jon.
It might not be too late Jon, assuming that he still has the files backed up. Though I'd imagine that he wouldn't be amenable to the idea, given that he's just taken down the whole site without any warning. Such a shame.
 11. And they ripped off Tauzero's copy.
 12.
It's the fashion for smaller cabs meaning they trade off sensitivity, thus need more watts for the volume.
It rather depends on the cabs doesn't it? Acmes definitely, BFB Midgets less so. I tend to think it's just the decreasing cost of the extra wattage myself. If you can have 500w for the same price that 300w would have cost you a few years ago, why not? Having said that, the increase in volume from going from 300w to 500w is insignificant.

I've never seen a scratchplate like that before. It actually makes more sense if you think about it.
 14. Probably overkill if anything.
 15.
Here, I was having some trouble seeing the details in the pics, so I downloaded bigger ones, thought some of ya'll might want a closer look.
Cheers for that. I just noticed the reference to the "7 band semi parametric EQ". Don't the people who write this stuff actually look at the pictures of what they're describing, or is that they just don't know what a 7 band semi parametric EQ looks like? Actually I think the same description was given on the LG as well.
 16.
Not really in these specific circumstances... the handling @ 4 Ohms is apparently 400W, push 500W (the amp's rated output into 4 Ohms) into that and 3 things will happen very quickly:

The speaker cone will go beyond its maximum excursion and permanently crease and disfigure. You will be aware of this by the buzzing, farty noise it starts to make.
The speaker coil will melt. You will hear nasty crackling noises and a very reduced volume.
Smoke will start to escape from the amp as the output transformer drives into a load it can't handle. Silence will soon follow.
Best avoided! ficelles
1. Most bass speakers will be pushing their excursion limits at around a third of it's thermal power handling. You'll be aware of this by the buzzing, farty noise it starts to make. In which case turn down and/or reduce the bass EQ. 2. The speaker coil will melt, at which point you'll hear no sound at all. Before this happens number 1 will kick in. 3. If the speaker goes open circuit smoke will start to escape from the amp as the output transformer drives into a load it can't handle. If it's a valve amp. SS amps don't have output transformers. Fixed it for ya.
 17. It depends what you mean by a good idea really. If you mean unleashing the full wattage from your amp without the need to use another 8 ohm cab, then yes it's a good idea. If you mean getting an appreciable increase in volume, then no it's fairly pointless. By dropping the impedance to 4 ohms you'll probably be increasing the wattage by about 50%, or just under 2dB in terms of volume. That's pretty much inaudible in the real world. If you should ever decide to use another matching cab the increased displacement and wattage combined will give you about 5dB increase in volume, as well as improved bass handling. Now that is useful.
 18.
Have used Ampeg on and off for nearly 40 years..............back in the day it WAS just fantastic but had no real competition ( apart from Fender, which was/is a different beast ) in quality specifically bass only gear. Then up popped Acoustic, then Trace and Dynacord and HH et al, Ampeg survived on reputation and quality. Then the reputations of the other companies grew, Trace became extremely popular, then up popped Hartke, EBS et al and the market just seemed to boom and boutique brands apperared. We now have SO much more choice and some will inevitably find something that suits them better than Ampeg. That just wasn't possible back in the day. Those pictures are a shocker but IMHumbleO say more about the shop than Ampeg. As has already been voiced many times, they should never have been accepted by the retailer - do you think Ampeg would like to see these pics, I think not. Would you have accepted these in that condition if it was your shop or if you had ordered from a distance seller, again I think not. As it happens I still have newish Ampeg gear which I use regularly. Both amp and cab are under 3 years old and I have no idea if they are US or China built. I have never bothered to look. They work as they should, are well built and robust and sound great so I'm happy. I agree that it'd be wrong to write Ampeg off, hopefully they will be made aware of these quality issues and rectify them. In the meantime enjoy the choice, us oldies could only dream of this choice when I was a lad !!!! Oh and I didn't live in a shoebox in middle t'road. Stewart p.s the above list of manufacturers is not meant to be exhaustive, just an indication of a time line.
+1 I love the sound of the SVT but there's no way I'm ever going to lug one of those things about. Thank god we've all got a bit more choice nowadays, something Ampeg would do well to remember. And on the subject of choice, if I remember correctly Phatbass787 is an absolutely MAHOOSIVE Ashdown fan. He should get Ashdown to give him a job in their marketing department!
 19.
I get the impression that much like Leo's stuff there was a certain amount of random variation between standard models! The 4003 neck seems slimmer to me, maybe im crazy....
Yeah, the necks on Rickenbackers are all over the place really. Some are quite chunky and others really slim - playing the one you're going to buy beforehand is a must, otherwise it's a bit of a crap shoot.
 20. It rather depends on which 4001 or 4003 as they've both changed a bit through the years, but the overriding differences are in the neck. The 4003 had a chunkier volute, a revised truss rod and (if memory serves) quarter sawn timbers.
 21. You don't have to reproduce the fundamentals to get a decent bass output. The other thing to remember is that it's odds on that the figures that are quoted for bass cabs are mostly BS anyway.
 22. It's got to be Moulty Moulton of The Barbarians! None of that triggered rubbish.
 23.
Talking of overpriced, how about this! Probably six times it's true value.... 24.
thanks for that 1/ when do they go to head end adjustment 2/ ....ohh and from when to when for body end adjustment ...this info would be great be on the Fender timeline
Added.
 25.
What was the situation with rosewood board neck truss rod adjusters? Were they all heel end adjustment, with no plug at the headstock end (no sign of anything, just a blank scallop), or did that vary through the years?
All the 70's Precisions had the truss rod adjustment at the body end, however they came in both skunk stripe/walnut plug and plain unadorned variants. I've no idea why, although the rosewood necked ones with a skunk stripe share the same neck code as the maple necks. I did consider adding in info about the Jazz, but I don't have as much interest in them so decided to steer clear.
