1.
If I need to learn a song, the first thing I do is write down all the chords for intro, verse, bridge, mid 8, etc then sort out the bass line. I find being able to play the song on guitar or keyboards gives me a clue as to why the bass is doing what it does and what it should be doing if I can't hear it properly (actually, more like what I can get away with) Also, being able to play all the chords usually means I can correct our guitarist who's only listened to it in the car on the way to rehearsal
Being able to check harmonies is invaluable, but don't allow it to distract from actually listening to the bass line. I often come across situations where a guitarist or keyboard player have written a lead-sheet based on what they've heard harmonically without paying attention to the bass-part. The upper part of the harmonies is accurate but you sometimes come into conflict with the keyboard player's left hand. Then ensue patronising looks from said keyboard player until you can bend his ear to actually listen to the bass on a recording (sorry, thread-hijack and mini-rant are hereby over)
2. All of the information above is spot on, especially repeated hearing in order to check and re-check "did I hear what I thought I heard? Or was I assuming what I expected to hear?" I think most of us who have posted so far are of a generation who worked this way and this is an extremely useful discipline. Of course thanks to all things bright and digital, we do also have the benefit of software to slow things down nowadays. Things like the amazing slow downer, or audacity to name but two. These can both be helpful particularly when trying to check out faster, tricky passages.
3. A lovely looking bass and I'd take it for the logo alone, but no trades... :-( GLWTS
4. Open for trades (+/- cash) type bump. Nothing specific, maybe something p-bass-ish (tokai punch, sq vm etc. etc. ) but I'm open for anything really.
5. Forgive if this has already been posted, butt it was new to me. http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/BIG-BUTT-004-BASS-made-in-USA-/121770260680?_trkparms=aid%253D222007%2526algo%253DSIC.MBE%2526ao%253D1%2526asc%253D20150519202351%2526meid%253D988e7aee3ac34384bc47920c78eb2a1a%2526pid%253D100408%2526rk%253D4%2526rkt%253D6%2526sd%253D291565352585&_trksid=p2056116.c100408.m2460
6.
At least he has been responsible for a most entertaining thread 😆
Such self-sacrafice is truly inspirational.
7.
They co-ordinate nicely with your living area!
Or is it the other way around?
8.
"It looks just like a Telefunken U47..."
".... with leather?"
9.
This is the best bass tone I've ever heard although this is live, actual song starts about 1m 30s in
Yep. And JJ Burnell's sound on "Peaches", same gig. https://www.youtube....h?v=TUoIclrvsPQ
10. I did the complete opposite once. I went to see the Dave Weckl band at a club in Berlin (I live there). I was friends with the club's owners (mortals like myself play there too sometimes) and was having a drink around the corner from their table. They kept popping round the corner and asking me to join them at their table with John Patitucci. Not knowing what to say and not wanting to bug the guy, I repeatedly declined. At some point the band members left and the manager came round and said "You *rse, we were struggling to make small-talk in English and he (Patitucci) was right up for a gab and a beer:" DOH!
11.
Well it's active - so full range of tones - lush, deep and rich tones so can do both Jazz and P bass - does a few more too.
I hope this isn't a daft question, but does it make Alembicy type noises too?
12. Yeah, his Harley Benton knocks spots off it
13. I saw them all backing James Taylor in summer. A dream come true. Sorry to hear it's sold out. Have you tried Ebay small ads? I live in Germany, but here you can always find tickets being sold on, on Ebay. Usual rules apply, of course. Best bet is paypal or pick the tickets up in person. People aren't likely to do you over when you know where they live. Sorry if that sounds grim and menacing but... well, you know what I mean. Aaah, I've just realised you're based in France, aren't you? So, Ebay's no use... sorry
14. I can't be of any help, I'm afraid, but am curious. How does it sound?
15.
Robert Fripp wears Ray Davies's old glasses, because he likes to play with Kink rims on.
Ouch!
16. I kept hoping (for his sake) that this was one of those shreds where someones dubbed cackhanded playing over the original audio.... ..., but noooooooo 👎
17.
Actually he's more like P!nk.
Rubbish, he's nothin' like 'er.
18. I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel. 'Hurt' - Nine Inch Nails (the Johnny Cash Version is also ace)
19. Well I'm well late, but here's something well worth the bump. What a super nice and incredibly inspiring/modest bloke. Like DRAX, I took a quick look at this with no intention of watching it all and 55 mins later, there I still was. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNACNx5UlR8
20. Phallic? Oh behave!
21.
Paul Simon was a big photographer
A fine composer and musician, I'll grant you, but he isn't a BIG anything.
22. Hi there, welcome aboard. I'm in Germany too, in Berlin. Whereabouts are you? Cheers, Paul.
23. I take it shooting them wouldn't be an option, then?
24.
Apparently Noel and Liam Gallagher actually share the same eye brow
... And were, in fact, shortlisted for the roles of Oddbod and Oddbod Junior in the classic 12th Carry On film, Carry on Screaming.
25. I don't know if it's already appeared in the thread (too lazy to check all 5 pages), but how about Barber's Adagio for Strings. Often over-used but still beautiful. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=izQsgE0L450
