Thanks for the replies lads youve all pretty much confirmed my fears, i suppose new pots wont break the bank, does that mean the EMG circuit will still work? ive managed to get enough money sellin a few odds and ends to get the nordys and im thinking if someone on here fancies some jv,s with a BT circuit i may have enough to get an aguilar obp 1 or 2 ( a two band is all im after for this) i think they come with the pots and arnt stupid money. Your right about the JV,S steve they are voiced to have a very faded but smooth sound, but i remember the slap sound my jazz used to have before i swapped, it had that lovely hollow punchy attack with a nice treble, the jv,s didnt sound the same, they do have a specific tone which i think you get regardless of what you put them on, this may sound crazy to some people but my jazz has a sound when played acoustically and i dont hear that sound plugged in what id like is the natural sound( and yes i know i should go passive, but i like to adjust at the bass coz i dont touch the amp eq). I fancy the nordys coz i have a nordy in my musicman and i think its great, they are supposed to be really good for jazz bass and they are quite reasonably priced. thanks again for the input ill let you know how it pans out- lee Hi Lee the BT controls won't work with the Nordstrands. I use the BT system with EMG P bass and J bass pups and this has plenty of bite but the JV's are voiced differently. Why not sell the EMG stuff and get an ACG 02 to go with the Nordys, this will give you more bite than you could ever need. Sorry Lee, I've just seen that money is tight, so the ACG may be a no no. Why are you going for the Nordys?

+1 Im left handed too and i play right handed, when i started on guitar many moons ago, my dad wouldnt let me swap the strings around on my acoustic guitar so was forced to play right handed, took longer to get my head around but well worth it, once tried a friends left handed bass and i couldnt do a thing with it (or right handed for that matter ) keep the flag flying southaws- lee Im a lefty playing right handed also! Im suprised theres so many of us on here. I decided to play right handed when i started becasue i could get my squire prescision for cheaper! was a great day.

Hi Cheers for the reply, the EMG,S are active i had them in before the preamp and it had a battery to power it, i got the preamp to counter the midrange of the pickups(they are very fat , perfect for fretless but i like a bit more bite for fretted) i gather using passive pickups with the preamp wont work so a new preamp may be in order too, but moneys a bit tight, i may well tr to sell the pickups and preamp on together i might get enough for an aguilar OBP 2 as i cant afford an east preamp (the j retro deluxe would be perfect as ive put the jack on the bottom and have a four control layout) anyway let me know what you think- thanks lee Were the EMG pickups active (seperate to the preamp) ? If so then it could be an issue for the preamp, if not then go for it.

Hi there Depends on what stuff you like to listen too, he covered a lot of diffrent kinds of music in his career, my first recommendation would be "kind of blue" with Paul chambers masterful jazz upright playing, later he did more modern fusiony stuff and some downright wacky stuff (Aura) my favourite,s were "your under arrest" with Darryl jones on bass and "Tutu/ amandla" with Marcus miller. but in my humble opinion for bass studying it,s all good!!! love Miles he,s great. Enjoy the music- LEE p,s , i dont know if you have access to a record player (i know vinyl) but ive a couple of his funkier stuff which ive replaced on cd, id be happy to dig them out and send them to you. hi, ive recently been getting into Miles Davis and im wanting to buy some of his records. Thing is there is a stupidly large amount of records he released. Can anyone recommend which album i should buy. Ideally ide like one which will be cool to study the bass in.

+1 John that sterling isnt short of Cahones!!! and the neck is fantastic, many thanks for putting it my way very happy with it ( when nearly having to sell a bass recently i chose to sell my warwick 5 over this, luckily i didnt have to sell either ) both fantstic instruments and all things to all men/women between them. Lee I've owned 2 Sterlings and 1 Ray and I have to confess I'd have a Sterling over a Ray any day! The Ray has a midge's kn*cker more ooomph when standard (I owned Lee's Nordstrand pup equipped Sterling and that has all of the balls of a ray) but the downsized body, S/P switching and gorgeous neck make the Sterling a better bass IMHO

Actually it was your original thread i remember, i just got it the wrong way round DOH!!!!!, thanks for the info very interesting especially about the stingray 5, s. Sterlings have ceramic pickups with a dummy coil for noiseless coil tapping. Stingrays have alnico. Stingray 5s originally had alnico, until the Sterling was brought out in 1993 (?) when they adopted the Sterling style pickup (albeit stretched). With the introduction of the Sterling 5, the Stingray 5 has reverted to alnico (IIRC).

Cheers, might have been the other way round so your prob right, mine actually has alnico coz its a nordstrand pickup, which is a bit fatter than the original which supports what your saying about the magnets as id imagine ceramic is a more modern tone:D the bongos have neo magnets would love to try one even though they look like toilet seats. I did hear something about stingrays having ceramic magnets in the pickups and sterlings have alnico,!! i have a sterling and i love it the necks really comfy and i like the small body coz im only wee myself ;)and im also a shandy drinking weirdo so manly stingrays arnt for me, played an old stingray a while back and loved the sound but the weight and neck was a bit much(especially for 5 sets a night 7 days a week . the neck diffrence is akin to a jazz verus a precision. soundwise the same although the sterling has the series/paralell/ single coil swithching i personall y dont like the other sounds but the main stingray sound is all you need, mind you tried a double pickup stingray 5 absolutely amazing well worth a try. take care- LEE is that why you tried to get my white sparkle Sterling off me back in May? I've owned both and both are great basses. I'd say the Sterling is the better bass for me because of the neck profile and switching (single coil mode is a useful addition imo) but I'd be just as happy owning a Stingray

Wow thats one gorgeous stingray!!! love the birdseye fretboard!! Ive always loved the musicman sound as one of my heroes is "Louis Johnson" but ive always shy'd away from getting one, until a fortuitous trade with mr warwickhunt bagged me this beauty!!!!! This is Rita my new 2003 Sterling in Cherry burst with matching headstock and a nordstrand pickup fitted[attachment=12579:demi_moores_019.jpg][attachment=12580:demi_moores_012.jpg] A total beauty im very pleased with it , i dont really use the switching just the parallel (i think) setting at the back for the proper stingray sound i dont really like the other settings, the grain in the ash is amazing need to sort some close up photos i think.Anyway keep posting those lovely rays, i particulary fancy an all natural double pickup sterling 5 ( i like the smaller neck and body as im a cissy) http://basschat.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/%3C#EMO_DIR%23%3E/laugh.png Lee
