Hi I use the EBS octaver its absolutly fantastic, but it does jump your volume up a wee bit when you switch it on, it has three modes which emphasise certain frequencys, but i always just use the mid setting, i used a boss oc 2 for years and loved it, totally diffrent sound a lot more synth like, but doesnt track that well low down but IMHO the EBS doesnt track that well past low c but i always play up really high when i use it. there is a boss oc 3 but ive no experience with that. all the best- lee Hope someone can help - I have the Pearl OC-07 that can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgkO85Jp-6o I want an up to date pedal as a replacement to use so I don't have to risk losing this one on gigs - can anyone advise something to try that's similar. I've had no joy whatsoever to date with any incarnation of the Boss pedals I've tried, and hope there's something out there. Thanks!
Amp / Cab Shootout! - Spur-of-the-moment Geordie Bass Bash!
lee650 replied to wateroftyne's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hi john So did the td650 surprise you, i love that head, ive played a lot of diffrent stuff through it and always been happy (oh and it sounds great for slap ) red off to the docs next week, had to wait a month for my local tech to be available very busy man to quote jimmy saville, may be having a trip home next month, will let you know. all the best, love the wall of rigs-lee WoT had the camera, rslaing looks comfortable with a 6 string SEI and... I have hair Must say it was a blast but 3 hours just flew by Revelations... at least for me All basses should have LEDs My Tech cabs eats wattage Schoeders are cleverly designed and eat cabs EBS TD650's have a lot more tonal variation that I imagined 4ohms is 'significantly' different to 5.3ohms regardless of sensitivity WoT should never be let loose with round-wounds I'll get up tomorrow morning and have given this some serious thought. Cheers RL & MB
-
Acoustic Image Focus SA: (600W) 3.5 lbs £ SOLD !!!
lee650 replied to eubassix's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Hi there you,ve seriously got my attention, ive been thinking of selling my EBS td 650, and buying a small power amp to use with my EBS microbass 2 as i only do small gigs so im looking at downsizing and having a little extra cash to put toward other stuff, this looks just what i need, but ive just looked at the acoustic image website and it quotes the power rating at 800 watts in 4 ohms , your ad states 600 is yours an older model? hope so as my cabs are rated600 watts in total so dont want to blow them up (mind you at the level i have to play) it would also depend on a quick sale of my own amp of course. let me know the specs, while im wrestling with my love of ebs ha ha. all the best- lee -
2xAccuGroove Tri 112L's £750 for both, inc cover SOLD, SOLD
lee650 replied to steve-soar's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Hi steve I too was born left handed, but due to rigorous torture, training, and the reluctance of my dad to ruin a perfectly good guitar by stringing it the wrong way round (the swine doesnt even play ) i now play right handed and im even treat like a normal person, and dont get funny looks on stage ha ha anyway back to the script, i really wanted these cabs, you,ve not had them long what are you after now???? ive got the tens as you know and they are fantastic really love em would have preffered the 12;s though, just about to put a massive deposit on a house so buying gears a huge no no at the mo otherwise i would have them and prob sell the tens ( enough power for an aguilar db 750 then! the tens are,nt powerful enough, work great with the EBS though). A huge bump for these amazing cabs whoever buys them will be very happy bunnies, let me know what your next rig is mate, all the best- lee -

Hi everyone Ive looked on the watford valves site, but to be honest they might as well be speaking in japenese, lots of nice little glass things which can transform a sound, but i must admit ive used hybrid amps for a while now, but never really delved too much into what makes valves tick. i did replace a groove tubes in my old SWR head for a mesa boogie one and i must admit i did notice a slight change, (a bit thinner sounding IMO) but nothing drastic, i do think its more important in all valve heads(which ive never tried, but im very curious ) very interested to hear about the NOS mullard not getting on with the EBS, as ive been reading lots of positive reviews of these( but not the price )but it doesnt surprise me. Will def call bernie goodfellow though as he's the authority on the EBS stuff, and im sure he'll stear me in the right direction, im always on the lookout, to slightly improve my tone (should really just work on my playing ha ha ) thanks again guys for your replies most appreciated- LEE Have you looked on the Watford valves site? They've got just about everything, including cryogenic treated valves which apparently sound amazing. Does anyone know what happened to the sticky that compared different valves? It seems a shame its not on here anymore seeing that someone put a lot of time into it. Good luck in your search for perfect valve tone. Cheers Just
Hi everyone Thanks for your replies, my EBS can actually run as solid state as well, so not sure if the valve is in the pre amp as such but can be switched in and out as required, which you couldnt do with my old SWR, i do like a bit of valvey goodness though as it adds a bit of life and warmth to the sound(especially to the EBS which is very clean) i do fancy the groove tubes though i let you all know if it makes a difference (especially to my cloth ears ha ha ). Thanks again guys-LEE

HA HA!! Your right, and ive never been accused of having golden ears!!!!, if they fit my warwicks then i might give them a go, thanks again mate most appreciated, let me know when your playin you live in oldham dont you? not a million miles away. cheers- lee
Cheers mate!! Thanks for the heads up, i dont need em for my pedals,i did hear they were bigger, do they fit in your warwick ok?, thats what i want them for, my jazz is active too, im pretty certain they wont fit in the battery compartment i had fitted. Ive also read they give a cleaner sound due to increased headroom, is that true? id imagine they just keep a consistent tone longer. Thanks again- LEE They fit fine in the Dolphin and my Reggie Hamilton Jazz. They don't fit in things with the swivel type battery compartment as far as I can see. Regarding a cleaner sound, I can't say I've heard any difference. 9V is 9V I would have thought although I'm sure some "golden ears" nerds will swear blind that they can hear an improvement.
Thanks for that! Just found an old thread on here, with a lot of valve comparisons, that was really interesting, thanks for your reply ill give bernie a ring, i used to have an swr bass 350 that had a groove tube in it and it sounded great so ill prob go that route. Cheers-LEE

Hi guys Gorge casas of miami sound machine (gloria estefan) was a noted dolphin user, saw them live in 96, and he slapped the livin daylights out of it, fantastic sound, but Andrew levy (brand new heavies) used them, also he had streamer 5 strings. the moral warwick neck through streamers are great. I really want this dolphin though!!!! Big bump for a big bass- LOL -LEE TMS was a Streamer man, amongst others Francis Bucholz of the Scorpions played Streamers and Dolphins!
Very true!! There wouldnt be a victor, without stanley, i really love his slapping though . Here's to mr Clarke Keep enjoying the music everyone-LEE Ha Ha! Possibly both! Stanley Clarke is an innovator - some of his early stuff might sound dated now, but back in it's day it was imaginative and original and paved the way for loads of modern players.
Hi everyone Thinking of replacing the valve in my EBS td650, mine was before the groove tubes, i have been looking at the Groove tubes 12ax7 m but there are a lot of bad reviews online(and they are always sold out!! ) im not bothered about loads of gain as i dont really use the valve overdrive( well just occasionally) i mostly like a clean/bright sound and use the valve to warm up the sound a little and give it some body. If anyones made any valve mods to their EBS heads id love to hear your opinions. Thanks very much- LEE

Thanks again- LEE RE: Ultralifes Just a heads up before anyone buys. Ultralifes do last MUCH longer than Duracells. Unfortunately they are a bit bigger than Duracells and will not fit in some basses/pedals. For example, they don't fit in my Stingray or in my Microbass.
Hi mate The one to get is "school days" its his most famous(and third i think) he,s got millions of albums out though and ive got most of them, they do tend to get a bit samey after a while so any greatest hits cd might be a good place to start. very inspirational stuff though still love him i just wish he'd play bass i do acually prefer his double bass playing which is amazing, oh an "journey to love" is a good un as well. Im actually between houses at the mo and all my cds are in storage, otherwise id sort something for you, ill let you know when ive access to them again. As far as iconic bass players its a bit late and im off to bed, im sure you;ll be drowned in threads by tomorrow, but some of my favourites include "Abraham laboriel", "Louis johnson", "Larry graham", "Anthony jackson", "Will lee" and you already know about "marcus miller" a lot f these guys were the pioneers of funk bass as we know it, happy listening. All the best- lee Oh and dont forget "bernard edwards" he's the greatest!!!!!!! Just mooching about on Youtube earlier and remembered that I should really check out some Stanley Clarke, so I did. Just watched one vid (a live version of Lopsy Lou, looked pretty damn old!) and really liked it. I know that's on his self titled album but wondered if that would be the best place to start. Can anyone suggest a "classic" Stanley Clarke album for me to get my teeth into? I think there's been a similar thread recently, but if anyone wants to suggest other iconic bass players that I should know about (and THE album they're prominent on) it would be appreciated. I'm in a funky mood right now, so anything in that area would be warmly welcomed! Cheers!
Hi everyone +1 on the procells, i used to get them at the theatres i worked at from friendly techies, glad ive a link to get em, they really do last longer, incidentally i saw an advert in bass player about 9v batteries called powerbugs, they are lithium batteries designed for musical instruments, went on their webpage they are supposed to keep full charge a lot longer and have more headroom(its just 9v isnt it ) unfortunately they dont deliver tothe uk so keep an eye out for distributers everyone All the best-LEE PS. Just done a bit of googling and read some Talkbass threads on powerbugs, lots of differing opinions but apparently powerbugs have ceased trading, even though loads of top pro's are apparently?? using them, however the parent company is called ultralife and they do lithium batteries at £12 for 10 on ebay, so i might take the plunge and buy a set, ill let you all know-lee

Sorry to hear that mate! Its a bit much to pay for something i dont need i have enough plug in boxes, if i could get it cannibalised and fitted to my jazz to replace the Emg circuit i have in, that would be great but extra expense and like you im really after a retro or an audere(a bit easier to install) youll sell it though itll make someones jazz very happy so Bump away- lee still not sold mate go on!!! hahhaa
Hi steve I bought the gramma while i was working on the cruise ships, i was playing through an ashdown 2x10 combo but the band was put in a kind of wooden box of a room, and i had no end of problems with acoustic coupling (when a cab is on a floor it connects with it producing a lot of low end, which im sure you know) the bass just sounded really boomy(not helped by the ashdown) and i found it hard to control, i even cut a lot of the bass on the EQ but it was unbearable, i saw an advert for these in bass player a while ago and managed to find a british company on Ebay that sold them it was about £70 they are much cheaper now though, and i must admit i was sceptical but a bit desperate to solve this problem so i bought one and it was fantastic it tightened the sound up no end, for years when i worked the holiday camps and toured in caberet shows i used to nick beer crates or bose 802 covers, anything i could get my hands on so my rig didnt touch the floor as if i want loads of bass i want to add it with eq and be able to control it, not have a boomey sound i cant control, as the advertising garb for the gramma states its a tweak for the room not your rig!! and its really true, it just takes a bit of crap out of your way, one of the best sounds i ever had was at an army base gig in edinborough where the stage was thickly carpeted and id just bought a hartke rig with my student loan and it was so clean and tight and i always atributed that to the room which the whole band agreed sounded fantastic using this replicated that! so anyway too my point i love it and will always use it as i like to take anything that could ruin my tone out of the equation and i find (IMHO) it works really well, but dont get me wrong i have used it in some rooms and nothing can help but most of the gigs i do now are small theatre gigs in pits so ive had no bother. Anyway spunktastick is a fantastic description and i thank you, and i know your rig is even more amazing( i wanted the tri 112's) keep in touch mate always great talking to you-LEE Just read your sig. How much of an improvement?
Hi everyone, time to show you mine!!!(2xaccugroove tri110's &Ebs td650 head) This is my latest rig and im loving it!!!, over the years ive used carlsboro, marshall, fender, trace elliot, hartke, swr, ashdown, Ebs,in every speaker combination(mostly 4x10 &1x15 setups) and this is the first rig i can manage by myself up a fight of stairs ( even though the accugrooves are big for 1x10 cabs) they are really light and sound fantastic, i was going to sell the EBS td650 to buy a markbass f1 or something but i love the sound so much i put up with the fact its built like a tank( and weighs about the same) so finally a happy bunny. mind you the Td has room for another 4ohms, so i thought an EBS neo 1x15 or get another two accugroove tri 110's to make the biggest 4x10 ever (always been fond of that setup) imagine that it;ll be 4x10, 4x6 & 8 soft dome tweeters, that'll make the horn players cringe when i turn up at the theatre pits ha ha!!!. No need to do that at the mo very happy(for a change) with what ive got, no pics of the pedalboard as yet but ill sort it. Keep groovin my brothers- all the best-LEE

Hi steve sorry for the late reply, just noticed your reply to my thread (sorry) thanks mate im very lucky ive been collecting gear for a long time and wish i was happy, but unlike a lot of GAS heads on here im never satisfied in answer to your question i did the mods on my squire a while ago when i was in my early twenties, because i thought it woould make me sound like marcus miller, couldnt be more wrong ha ha!!, im currently thinking of putting nordstrands in to et more of its old tone back, mind you the EMG jv's are great but very midrangey and it didnt slap as well after i put them in( Not that its's a priority now) they would be fantastic for a fretless jazz though, the EMG circuit i thought was a waste of money doesnt add anything to the sound at all, am thinking of getting a j retro deluxe so i can have the proper passive sound and an active one. I love thw badass bridge though and will add one to any fender i get in the future, i am after a precision next after 18 years of playing ive never owned one. I note youve got the marcus miller, im really surprised ive never bought one of those, as i adore him. Keep in touch mate nice talking to you- LEE Alright there Lee, Some nice gear you've got there. My first bass was a new 1985 Squire Precision. Wish I still had that, although I love the tone of the Jazz I have now. Seems to suit all the covers I play in the band. Sounds like you've chosen to do some enhancements to your old Jazz. You pleased with the results?
Hi guys Me again, the wav does have a foldable stand but its generaly considered to be a really weak link, so upgrading to a CR stand would be sensible , i was really lucky in that mine came with a CR series stand but that isnt the norm, i do fancy gettin the endpin stand which i think is about £150 as i cant stand up in theatre pits, much prefer to stand with it though, one thing about the WAV to consider is that it is a piezo pickup so the input impedance is very high and a lot of amp inputs have low impedance for magnetic pickups ( has to be at least 1 mohm) otherwise it rolls of all the low end, and the WAV IS very bright sounding anyway so a preamp isrecomended, i bought ans EBS microbass 2 as the A input is designed for high impedance and i can switch between the WAV and my warwicks, and t then gives it a 2 band eq which dramitically improved the sound, a friend of mine has an Aria and i also tried one before getting the WAV and ididnt like it, (it does sound nice though) just a very big neck (ive got small hands ) but i did prefer the tone of the WAV . Hope this helps John i must sayplaying an upright is a nice change its got me back into playing again, after 15 years of playing professionally i was treating the bass as a work tool, which is not why i got into bass in the first place. Hope everyones cool- take care- LEE That has its advantages and disadvantages. My first EUB was a BSX, the predecessor to the Flip range as far as I can tell - 34" scale and tripod stand. From that, I went to a Palatino VE-500 which has an endpin. It was rather heavy though, and the end pin was a bit of an inconvenience as with the overs band I only played it for a few numbers and with the barn dance band there's gaps between the dances while the future Mrs Zero shouts at the putative dancers to bend them to her will, which all meant that a stand would be more convenient. I now have an NS WAV-4 which I like - I briefly had an overlap of instruments so I was able to compare the necks of the WAV-4 and the VE-500 and although they're noticably different, I didn't have a preference for one over the other (I'm very inexperienced on EUB which may be one reason for that). I would actually like the NS end-pin and stand, but I think it needs the CR tripod, and the total cost of doing it is around £350.
Hi mate +1 for the TD i have one too, its my one concession to weight (its heavy ish) but it sounds so good i dont mind, whoever gets this is getting a bargain, iwould keep it ( mind you epifani have a new amp at namm called the piccolo which might be very interesting). good luck with the sale, fantastic tone, and the best built in compressor in the busness, have another bump- all the best -lee If I didn't already have one, I'd snap your hand off at this price. Can't believe you've not had any takers. Maybe everyone's still skint after Xmas. Good luck with the sale (and another free bump ) Cheers, Pete.
Hi John Hows it goin mate I bought an NS WAV eub last year and i absolutely love it, i got the amber burst one and am very happy with it, i got it from Promenade music in morcambe, and gary did me a fantastic deal, (£680 and they,d just come out then, I even got the upgraded stand that comes with the more expensive versions, think that was a one off though) i think they are a great way to discover upright bass, like you ive been an electric player, i did dabble a bit while at college in newcastle and had lessons from a great guy called PETE STEWART dont have his no unfortunately it was a while ago, anway the actions low and the strings are very light, they also have fingerboard dots for us intonation dummies , so the transition is a lot easier, ive not used it too much in gigs (bit scared) but when i have ive had lots of compliments o the sound, a lot of purist say its just a big fretless electric and they have a point but with abit of creative tweaking you can get close and the sound is fine for me, i will upgrade to a 5 string CRM5 in the future and eventually get a proper one if i can get a big enough house. Anyway mate i recommend them highly i always wanted a steinberger, and when the wav came out i could finally afford one, give me aPM if you want a natter about it- all the best- LEE Cor not been in this part of Basschat before Anyways... Due to a dicky shoulder I'm considering delving into the realm of EUB (done a search on here and I've taken on board the recommendations to get a tutor), my first question is simply; are the NS WAV EUBs any good as an introductory bass? The Bass Centre have them in new for £699 which doesn't seem too bad a price! Cheers
