1.
Describe the typical BassChat bass player....
Middle-aged, bitter and resentful of his lack of commercial success. Spends his days online denigrating those players who are younger, better looking and more successful. <Runs away fast>
2. Modern, lightweight gear and a five string? I'm finally modern!
3.
Mark Plati played Ashes to Ashes in Bowie's live band as Gail Ann Dorsey isn't a fan of slap. Gail played six string instead.
I didn't know that. When I saw them in the late 90s she played it, but maybe there was no one else available.
4. Does 'modern' mean someone playing now or does it mean a young player now or does it mean a player who is looking forward in their playing, anticipating trends? Does it mean someone who is modern in their choice of equipment? Is an 18 year old playing Sweet Home Alabama on a vintage Fender through an aged amp modern? As you can see, I'm better at asking questions than answering them today.
5. Samey but I love them: AC/DC (some differences between albums, but samey given their longevity) Status Quo (ditto) Oasis
6. Up and down like the Assyrian Empire.
7. I dimly remember having this explained to me in great detail by a music historian. There is no official standardisation of fret markers and a great many variations were used by different manufacturers. W have arrived at the current configuration because it is generally considered to be aesthetically pleasing (neither too many nor too few markers) while having enough markers to make finding the correct fret simple. Just one example; to my eye, Brian May's fretboard looks cluttered, despite being easier to identify frets.
8. I was 5/10 which is probably aluminium in heavy metal stakes.
9. Two. One bass and amp at home and one bass and amp in private rehearsal room. I find that going to a rehearsal is much less effort if I don't have to take anything with me. Oops. Edit: Three. I forgot about the four string for people to use at jam nights. I never use it because I am too used to five strings, now.
10. Living in the hinterland, as I do, travel to a music shop is either a 22 mile round trip to PMT or independent store (both have cracking service) or the internet. I confess to liking having physical stores but disliking the journey and preferring the convenience of the internet. The very definition of hypocrisy. xxx
11. As a rule, I tend to think that any sneering aimed at a famous / wealthy / successful musician usually has a large dose of jealousy included. It can be sneering at playing, miming, performance or complaints about the pressures of life when famous or any of a myriad of topics, but jealousy is usually in there somewhere. I'm big enough to admit that I have been guilty of it in the past, but these days I wish them all luck. Well, maybe not Bono.
12. I forget who it was, possibly Jason Newstead, who said that the hardest bass line is playing straight 1/4 or 1/8 notes without throwing in any fills, riffs or anything else. I know what he means because for me, they are the ones that I find hardest to sing and play.
13. Grace also slapped Russell Harty. Instant heroine.
14. Soft 4U Spider case for amp Padded covers for speakers Levy's leather gig bag for bass Pedaltrain junior soft case for pedals Plastic mail pouches for cables and PSUs (keeps them separate and untangled) Quality Street tin for odds and ends
15. I love Victor Wootten's playing, but his 'playing face' irritates me intensely. I dread to think what expressions he makes when in bed.
16. I remember having real difficulty with Britney Spears's Toxic. A ferocious bass line, but a great one. I had to apologise to one band and admit defeat over Daniel Beddingfield's Somebody Told Me.
17.
I quite like it from the front...I wouldn't buy it but I don't hate it
I agree. It's not for me, but it has a certain something.
18. I've used them a few times quite satisfactorily, but maybe I was lucky. I generally use Gear4Music as they have always been good, though.
19. I find busy songs easier to learn than root note stuff, probably because there is more to hold onto in my mind. That said, learning Muse's Hysteria took me weeks to get the timing right. If a song is causing trouble, I will spend no more than an hour per day at it so that there is time for my brain digest it.
20. As I have only ever used roundwounds, I'm probably not best equipped to provide advice (but when did that ever stop me?). Even though my main bass is very bright sounding, I like the roundwounds because, when listening to the whole band, my bass gets a full, fatter sound. When I practise with headphones, it sounds squeaky and clacks a lot. Perhaps we need a thread called "How I learned to stop worrying and love my sound."
21. Billy Bragg came close. I ordered two signed copies of his book "A Lover Sings" before Christmas. There was a shortage and a lady from his shop rang apologising and offering to send unsigned ones direct from the printer by courier to be guarantee delivery. I said that timing was relatively unimportant and would prefer to wait for signed copies. She thanked me and said that Bill would write dedications as I was being understanding. I got both books with appropriate names and signatures and they still arrived before Christmas. That sort of service suggests to me that making money is secondary to customer service.
22. If there were an app, what would it be called? Basschapp? Bappchat? Bappchapp?
