1. No. But that is because there is too much life in my life to leave me the enthusiasm to. I like new music when it bumps into me, though.
2. Quite right. Appearance matters. Sort yourself out and smarten yourself up man. Joking apart, I personally don't like the roadworn look, but that's just because I wish I didn't look so roadworn!
3. Or Queen's The Works. Several classic tracks on one short album.
4. Wow. So, so many to choose from. To my ears Iron Maiden's Powerslave is up there as it has no weak tracks on it.
5.
For young people, it's not cool to go see bands anymore.
In the UK it is very cool for young people to see bands, but venues have much stricter regulations which are more vigorously policed than when I was young. So a small music venue that I used to frequent (called The Venue, imaginatively) wouldn't today get away with packing 500 people into a 300 capacity venue, of which at least 200 will be 16 - 17 year olds. Such cavalier disregard for the law and safety (the emergency exits were chained shut to stop people sneaking in for free) enabled it to stay open for far longer than it would otherwise have been able to. Venues are also held accountable for drugs and violence that take place in them now, too. This means that they are spending more on bouncers (who are now trained and regulated and so get paid more) and so their margins are squeezed from all sides. Finally, young people are not drinking as much alcohol as they once did, either.
6. I would say “occasionally superior” rather than “often far superior.”
7. It is a nice idea, but it didn't work. I would like to see a version of this by someone with some artistic ability, rather than a drunken student.
8. As a rule, I would be happy ordering from Japan as the country is pretty well-behaved and well-regulated. China or Hong Kong would be another matter, though.
9. If some venues are closing, it means other venues are opening. The manner which music is consumed changes with musical styles.
10. The willingness to be creative (please note that I do not say ability) is born from a willingness to experiment without the fear of failure. So anyone can learn to sing, write, paint, etc. if they are prepared to experiment and learn along the way. Being taught the basic principles, cultural norms and conventions is a great help, too.
11. Well done! I bought a five string prima from them last year and was tempted to go back and buy that one, too. Thank you for saving me from myself. Enjoy!
12. Seen this before, but it is always worth a Luke......
13. Yup. I'm a big fan of Ms Dorsey's music (and my crush on her which started in the 90s shows no sign of abating.)
14. For the first few lines I thought it was a blank verse poem.
15. Officer! OFFICER! HELP!
16. You are not alone, but are still weird. 😉
17. I have recently changed my policy re which bass gets used for what. I used to keep my best bass for recording or gigs with a decent stage to keep the audience away from it. For general pub gigs my cheaper bass was brought out. However this meant that, not unlike Rapunzel, my best bass was little seen and less used and I don't seem to be getting my money's worth from it. So now, like Cinderella, I use it for all gigs and accept that, over time, it will get dings. What do you do?
18.
Straw man argument - I didn't say that at all, I'm just questioning the whole validity of the tribute thing. Personally, I'd rather watch 10 original bands, of which only 1 or 2 might be any good, rather than 10 tribute acts who play impeccable versions of whatever band’s songs. I guess it all depends why you go to gigs. If you want see something safe and predictable you can sing along to whilst basking in the warm nostalgic glow of your youth, go suck those tribute acts up. I just happen to think it’s boring and pointless. I really don’t care how much money they make or how much the x factor loving masses enjoy them or how fantastic the musicians who play in them are.
Ah, but you are not just questioning the validity of the tribute thing, are you? You are a literate enough chap and you know that you are being condescending in a way that is designed to provoke
19.
We had one to hand out the milk at break in primary school
Ha ha ha ha!
20.
You are in the entertainment industry.
+ ∞ To me, entertaining the public is paramount. There are many ways to do this, obviously, but I keep it in the forefront of my mind. Volume, set list, start/finish time, pandering to drunken audience members, etc. is all done with giving people a good time.
21. I went to see the Bootleg Beatles and found it a strangely unsatisfying experience. Because they weren't Beatles it didn't seem real to me. That said, the rest of the audience were transfixed, so maybe it was me. On the flipside, I saw Bowie in a smallish venue in the early 90s and it was an utterly magical experience. Maybe the 'real' artist exudes some magical star quality that the Bootlegs didn't, maybe it was all in my mind. Who knows?
22. Does anyone else always think that other people's bass playing has a better sound than yours? Intellectually, I know I have a great sound as people always tell me that I do, but when listening to someone else, theirs invariably sounds better to my ears. Not the playing or skill, just the sound/tone, etc. It doesn't matter if they are playing my gear or their own, either? Does this happen to others, or just me?
23. OK, I will: They are classified among Varanidae, are indigenous to Africa, Asia and Oceania. The largest example is the Komodo Dragon.
24. The lyrics. In almost all cases, the lyrics make the song for me. This is partly why I love Billy Bragg and Eric Bogle and partly why I don't like the Chili Peppers more recent stuff as the lyrics have become almost entirely nonsensical. I always sing along with the songs I am playing. Fortunately most of the singing along is done off mic.
