1.
Again, this may or may not be true, but I read somewhere that it's because of the decline of the high-street butcher and the fact that most people buy their meat from supermarkets and therefore no longer ask for bones to give to their dogs. It was the ingestion of calcium that made the dogshit white in the past and because dogs effectively no longer eat bones that there's far less white dogshit...
Yup. That's definitely true.
2. So what song best embodies this instrument? I'm tempted to say Brown-Eyed Girl because it will never disappear but I'll go with The Star Spangled Banner because it seems like a good idea but is totally unsung/playable unless you are super skilled because of the unnecessarily wide range required.
3. When young and poor (as opposed to late middle-aged and poor) a guitarist in my band left his HH amp in my parents' garage while he went off to become better acquainted with heroin. After a couple of months the band voted to sell it and buy me a bass amp so my knackered generic speaker could be used as part of the PA.
4. I remember seeing a Bowie interview around Serious Moonlight time. In it he mentioned the importance of having everything perfectly scripted for the live show. For EVERY song, there was a contingency plan for fluffs such as his forgetting a line or singing the wrong verse.
5. I was at a gig last night and, in a break, someone came up to me and asked if I was playing a Dingwall Prima Artist. It is great to have decent gear recognised. It must be what dating a supermodel feels like (sort of). I invited him to have a go on it but he was too scared of dropping/knocking it.
6.
XOR rather than NAND, surely? lennon.!mccartney + !lennon.mccartney
Yeah, okay smarty-pants, it was the best part of 30 years ago and I wasn't any good at it then!
7. One of the reasons that Iron Maiden's Live After Death is a favourite is that a couple of minor fluffs and missed vocal notes are left in. It just emphasises how tight they were in the glory days. I heard a Chris Wolstenholme interview last year where he said that he allowed himself three mistakes per gig and if he made more, even if they were so minor that no one would notice he knew that he needed to put more hours in.
8. Ah, the Tennessee is back. The ginger step-child of basses.
9. Dingwall prima - state of the art bass with a full range of pickup sounds. Lives at home unless gigging. Dingwall combustion - lives in rehearsal studio. Having two Dingwalls means that practising I don't have to lug anything from home to rehearse. Vanderkley amp and two cabs. Beautiful sound and thunderously loud while remaining clear. I'll never need another rig. Gmajor effects gives the rig tiny aural tweaks as necessary TC BG 250 - lives in rehearsal studio.
10. I remember when doing Boolean Algebra at college and we all had to produce a hypothesis and proof for a seminar, a cleverclogs chap in my class produce a very funny hypothesis that read something like: lennon AND McCartney > lennon NAND McCartney BECAUSE lennon AND McCartney = penny lane BUT lennon NAND McCartney = happy Christmas war is over + wonderful Christmastime. There was much more to it than this and the algebra was expressed correctly, unlike my version here.
11. That would be very cool in the right pair of hands (not mine).
12.
Only surpassed in your opinion. Blue
Blue, you are doing it again. You are, of course, entitled to disagree with me and I respect your right to do so. However, please stop making absolutist statements rubbishing my opinion. I am not the only person who thinks that the Beatles have been surpassed and you know it. To suggest that I am in the manner in which you did is clearly designed to belittle me in a manner which is both childish and offensive. I am entitled to be treated with the same respect with which I treat you.
13. Like most trailblazers, the Beatles have been surpassed by others many times since, but that shouldn't detract from their achievement.
14. Yummy. That looks fun, but I know my limits.
15. Ooh. I wish I could have this but I'm at my Dingwall limit.
16. Compared to Vienna's love affair with Mozart, Liverpool's marketing of the Beatles is modest and understated.
17. In the past I have used bubble wrap and gaffer tape. It isn't pretty but it works.
18. On a three set night, a few quality slow paced songs in set 1; 2 smoochies 2/3 of the way through set 2; 4 smoochies 3/4 of the way through set 3
19.
I assume that many people have listened to Sgt Peppers as that was one of their best albums. I really can see why people would hate them after listening to that. Awful album.
+1 The Beatles in hippy phase were/are firmly banned from my record/cd/MP3 player. Still like their earlier stuff, but the later phase is a nono. Each to their own, though.
20.
Surely the whole point in getting people talking about you is to pique their curiosity, not to make them all think you're a monumental helmet-flake.
Possibly, but the media are much more interested in the latter than the former, so pandering to their baser instincts will gander wider coverage and, once the noise subsides, a more considered discussion of Mr West's merits will emerge whence it wouldn't previously.
21. Quite right, Rich. Apologies for getting side-tracked.
22.
I have never been accusatory. I have merely given my opinions. But good point none the less. At this point in time I guess I don't care who gets it or doesn't get it. Blue
Intentionally or otherwise, your opinions are often couched in absolutist terms with a hint of circular reasoning which conveys the impression that those who disagree with you are somehow inferior. Saying you feel sorry for those who don't share your opinion is quite startlingly offensive.
23.
I think your missing my point. All I'm saying is, when a bass chat member asks a more than elementary question about anything band related my answer for a 17 year old is going to be different from my answer to a 60 year-old member most of the time. For example, to a 17 year old I might say; "Sounds like a good idea, you have your whole life ahead of you, go for it." Same question to a 60 year old my answer might be; "You do realize your 60 years old?" Blue
That's pretty much exactly what I meant. Not everyone wants advice/opinions to be determined by their chronological age.
