1. That's not the Comedy of Errors (as in Scottish prog band from the 80s) is it? Here are my two doublenecks: 1975 4080 BG--------------------------1982 4080/12 MG I used to have a Steinberger Spirit 4/6 and a rather unpleasant thing from somewhere around Korea, but both got nicked from the house we had in Ealing in 2010. Unfortunately I don't play any prog now, but when I was doing the Rush tribute thing, they did get used.
2. I've had it too (picked up and put in spam folder by my ISP). Email address is not unique to BC so it could have been picked up anywhere, but given some of the comments above, I suppose it is possible that BC was the source for my email address.
3. Yes, mine have split on my RH450. I also haven't had time to look into getting them replaced, so I'd be interested to know if anyone has managed it.
4.
Power Windows is the weakest sounding of all the Rush albums in my opinion. Still love it though!!
No, that would be Presto! Definitely the thinnest sounding...in my opinion (although Mr Lee thinks there's something wrong with it too)
5. Yes, once saw my MK1 fretted for sale on Gumtree in the Shetlands, despite the fact that it was sitting in my house in Kent at the time. The photographs used were taken in the home of the previous owner (I remembered the carpet!). I don't know where the 'seller' got the photos from as I'd had the bass for quite a few years.
6. Best 'tone' I've ever heard from any guitarist I've ever worked with comes from this wonderful little thing: http://www.cornfordamps.com/hurricane.htm It provides sufficient (but manageable) on stage volume to deal with a loud drummer & a loud kit, and I can only imagine how good it would sound if the guitarist actually changed his strings more than once a decade. Many moons ago, I was complaining to a certain guitarist about how massively loud his on-stage sound was compared to everything else in the band. He persisted with the 'tone' argument until he heard a recording taken straight from the desk of a gig we'd done at a fairly large venue. This recording featured almost no guitar at all as his on stage sound was so blisteringly loud that there was no point in running it through the PA. An audience recording of the same gig verified this, but also that there was no way of controlling how he was presented FOH, meaning it didn't always sound coherent. Shortly afterwards, an equipment change followed and sensible on-stage volumes prevailed. I'm assuming that if all the instruments are running through the PA, then there is reasonable monitoring too. Then it's easy to give the guitarist plenty of himself in his monitor and he can carry on imagining his parts are vastly more important than anyone else's, while out front the sound guy can give you a decent mix. Then everyone's happy.
7. It's not really an effects unit*, it's more like a set of Taurus pedals (as used by the likes of Genesis & Rush) without the actual pedals. To get proper use of them, you need a set of pedals (like the Roland PK5) or a keyboard to give it midi notes to play. EDIT for accuracy: *I believe you can run an external input through the filter section though.
8. Yes, they have. They posted some photos of lefties on their Facebook page during October.
9. At this price I couldn't resist either & mine also arrived today (well yesterday now). Had a run through the presets, most of which are a bit over the top as expected. Think I will be able to create some usable sounds on it though & it could be a useful 'straight through the PA' backup too. Good price & service from GAK.
10.
Tail lift? Bad paintwork? I love their basses but the necks and the fact they won't sort the bridge problem just seems crazy.
My understanding is that genuine tail lift has not been a problem on Rickenbacker basses manufactured in recent years (although maybe someone will come aliong that has had a recent problem). Besides an issue with a batch of Midnight Blue around ten years ago, I'm not aware of any bad paint jobs recently either. Out of interest, what is it about the necks that you are referring to? A friend of mine who is a bit of a guitar collector thinks that my Ricks (at least the ones I've owned from new) have the best finishes he's ever seen on a guitar or bass. They seem to be the bass everyone loves to hate, but I've never had problems with any of mine and three of them are my three favourite basses. Maybe I've been lucky.
11. Like 4000, I actually prefer the Rickenbacker ergonomics that so many seem to struggle with. I have six Rickenbackers in various guises, one of which is the bass I would reach for every time if I had a free choice (it's just totally wrong for one of my bands unfortunately).
Cheers man, you're welcome! Glad you like it. That price was an absolute steal compared to what these usually fetch! 799 for a lefty is really really cheap, considering their rarity and having been out of production since 2010.
Great price. Incidentally, lefties are back in production right now...
12.
Massive minus points for the thumb over the top of the neck, 2m07s onwards
Same for Mr Squire then, as he has his thumb over the top quite a bit too
13. A few months ago, there was an online competition to remix Don't Stop Me Now. I downloaded the raw tracks to have a bit of a play with them and was struck by how rough the individual performances were - not awful, but surprisingly unpolished. Yet it was clear that when blending everything together, the individual flaws gave the recording energy and excitement that I'm certain would be missing otherwise. What's more, none of the errors sounded like mistakes when heard mixed in with the whole performance. I've been concerned in the past about my performances when hearing them in isolation. It's good to hear that recording artists that have sold millions do the same things - and to appreciate that these things may well have had a positive effect on the overall recording.
14. Played at a local club last night. Start up delayed as food was still being served and wondered if we would have time to play the agreed amount of time before residents nearby started complaining (as they had done at the last gig there apparently). Was also worried that we might be too loud (our drummer unfortunately only has two volumes - loud and mute). First set was a bit odd as quite a lot of people were outside (where apparently we sounded like a loud hi-fi), but as the evening cooled they started to come in. By the time we got halfway through the second set, everyone was in and they all seemed to be dancing. It was one of those nights where you really feed off the energy from the audience. Somehow we even managed to turn a couple of errors into extensions to the songs. Finished the set including the 'usual' encore and turned off the gear to much applause & cheering. Outside having a cigarette and it became apparent that we weren't going to be able to leave without doing something else, so we popped back in for a bonus performance. Still left them wanting more - and no complaints from nearby residents. Edit: First time I'd used my Gramma at a gig too. Not sure it was essential last night, but bass sound was exceptionally tight and defined.
15. It's also how it's pronounced in Canada anyway.
16. This thread has made me think of a problem I've encountered recently. If anyone's like me, at some point (especially after moving house), you'll end up with a whole load of mains cables and not be certain what belongs to what. I started putting labels on my cables, but sometimes I got lazy, or the labels came off. In the 'old days', when you bought any kind of electrical item, the instruction manual told you what fuse was required in the plug. These days, this information doesn't seem to be in there, so I'm sometimes wondering whether the fuse in my mains cable is rated far higher than it should be for a given appliance (thus sort of defeating the point). I'm probably being really stupid here, but how can I be sure I'm using the correct fuse?
17.
MOTP is indeed a decent album. I did get the impresion there was tension in the band when I saw them at a gig just before MOTP was released so I'm not holding my breath that this lineup will record another one.
I think there were reasons outside the members of It Bites itself that might have led to a bit of tension around that time...they're touring again in December, including a show with Frost*. Back on the Rush topic, I'm still enjoying Clockwork Angels - it's a really pleasant surprise for me and the best thing they've done for at least two decades. Just over two months until my next Rush show!
18. It was pretty scrappy and pretty awful to be honest. Not surprisingly, Neil Peart's rather stiff playing style probably didn't help matters. It seemed to me that none of them really seemed to be listening to each other that closely and while Jeff Berlin seemed to get a fair number of notes right, the bass playing just left me cold. When I did the Rush tribute thing, I normally figured out the parts and got to a point where I was happy with my performances (with a bit of practice obviously). I always struggled with YYZ though, for some reason.
19. I've been trying loads of other strings over the past 5 years, as despite my own experiences I keep reading how rubbish Rotosound strings are. I quite like DR Lo-Riders, but I've found that nothing seems quite as right for me as the Rotosound Swing Bass 66s and I won't be wasting any more time and money trying others unless something new comes along. The steels are a little hard on frets (more so on Fenders than Rickenbackers incidentally), but the nickels (while not quite so bright) are quite easy on frets and probably don't feel as rough either. Incidentally, I don't think the likes of Geddy Lee are using Rotos because they're paid to (as was implied earlier), I think they are way past that stage! Besides, I suspect that any string manufacturer would happily give them a similar endorsement deal, should they really prefer another brand.
20. It's all over. The closest I can get to this is that I've had strudel at the Inn Cafe Hell that features in the video.
21.
Can't go wrong for 95p on Amazon!
95p? Was that used?
22.
Concerned my boobs are too big for this
They are! Certainly rules me out...
23. In the case of electronic stuff, where there's no variation between individual items of the same product, I guess ordering online with the option to send it back if you don't like it makes sense especially if there's a saving to be had. However I'm sure we've all had times when we've tried out a few basses or guitars that are ostensibly the same and yet found marked variation between them. I've made a few big decisions online over the years, which have fortunately worked out quite well, but there's nothing like that feeling of picking up a bass in the shop and thinking 'this is the one'. As for being ignored once I've been given a bass or amp to try, I actually quite like this as I can noodle away incompetently without anyone judging me, meaning I can relax and explore the product. However when this has happened, the shop staff have always said something like 'I'll just be in the next room if you need anything'. I've had shop assistants acknowledge that they weren't experts in a particular field and go off to seek advice or in one case, suggesting that it might be better to visit the following day when their expert in that field would be back. Annoying if you've made a special trip I suppose, but nice to have the honesty and the offer of sound advice rather than being told what I wanted to hear in order to get the sale. I've never come across a situation where a shop wouldn't let me try stuff out (although I've heard about such things). Seems crazy to me. I suppose many shops see a lot of time wasters, people checking stuff out before buying it online, damage through carelessness & I guess it must get to you eventually. However I'm sure some conversation with visitors would soon sort the wheat from the chaff. Read some shocking stories on here over the years (with a couple in this thread). Makes you wonder how some of these businesses ever hope to remain open with such a negative attitude to customers. I think music shops can still play a role in selling musical equipment. Hopefully the better ones have recognised this & will survive.
24.
As a bit of an aside... I know it's been mentioned before, but I've just picked up the remixed (not just remastered) 'Far Cry' from Retrospective 3. Alex and Rich Chycki really took the original mix apart and rebuilt the song so it sounds like a punchy power trio. The transformation is incredible. Well worth 70p or whatever from Amazon... Nice to see what they can do without Nick Raskuliniczceuliniczezecz layering the life out of everything...
Thought it was only the Vapor Trails songs that were remixed for Retrospective III?
...and not likely to be found playing with a pick - even when playing guitar. I started out with a pick in the early 80s, have no idea when I ditched it & don't recall making a conscious decision about it. Sometimes I come across songs where I think it would be better if I did use one, but I struggle with them these days & certainly don't think it's an inferior technique. Besides, Chris Squire is one of my favourite bassists, a definite pick user and I wouldn't describe him as 'not real'.
