6. PJ - top 5, easy. Saw him late 70s. Gonna keep bumping this so people read it. Required. Thanks for sharing.
7. Her voice was her personality. Great energy. Saw her once in Norwich, just coming out of a restaurant. She lit the place up for an instance. An unremarkable event really, but I'll always remember the impact it had on me.
8. A real shaper. He is why I play bass. Really sad news. Feel like we have lost a bit of ourselves.
9. just watched the75 Christmas eve Old Grey Whistle Test concert at Hammersmith Odeon for umpteenth time. Deacon is more dynamic than I remember, tho the camera hardly ever is directly on him, despite spending a lot of time standing in front of Roger Taylor. Never saw them live sadly, despite being my era.
10. What does a Ken Smith sound like and why is it good for gospel?
11. Two things: 1) hearing Chris Squire on Yours is No Disgrace, Roundabout, Close to the Edge 2) seeing Jaco play at Newcastle City Hall with Weather Report ergo seemed the coolest instrument to play
12. Always great to make those discoveries yourself. After 30 years of playing I'm still learning (and trying to unlearn some bad habits). I find I can practise at home on my own with the light touch, playing faster and smoother, good tone, but as soon as I'm with the band I am back to digging in to be heard. I've tried turning up the amp but find it hard to control dynamics. Am I missing a compressor in my life?
13.
Easiest way to play Sir Duke is by keeping your wrist fixed at your start point, and play the lot using only one octave....The whole thing is done using a tight pattern, and your hand never moves up or down. Some how it looks even more amazing than flying up and down the neck, as even though it is only using one octave, in a band environment, it sounds no different, apart from all the bottom end DOESN'T drop out in the high register parts.. Try it...7 notes and no hand movement whatsoever..
I like it. Not sure it's easier, maybe if I hadn't been practising this for so long, but in the band setting I like the idea of keeping the bottom end, with 3 horns, a guitarist and I playing in unison (in theory).
14. No. Reasons I change: 1) not happy with sound of a bass so try something different 2) buy a "new" bass and it comes with them or it needs a set up Never change because I think I have to. I keep the strings and they often get cycled around the others as an experiment. My main basses have 3 year old Sadowsky Blue Labels and 5 year old TI Flats.
15. Just picked up a Fender AV reissue 58 P bass up from Si. A great day out for me and the missus, especially after I spotted we were close to RHS Wisley Gardens! A real pleasure doing business with Si from start to finish, and the bass is superb, "as new" as he described, looking forward to getting to know it. Si is a friendly, informative, no messing, straight ahead gentleman; what BC is all about. Have every confidence when dealing him. Now, do I pay heed to the Fender label, warning me to leave the bass in the case to acclimatise for 24 hours? Damn you, authentic nitrocellulose finish :-) Geoff
16. I have shipped 2 basses recently (abroad) after having never posted before. A bit of effort but worth it. Last time buyer paid for this http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Bass-Guitar-foam-Case-by-Gear4music/C87 and it comes in a cardboard box. Worked really well.
17. I've been looking at higher end sixers, selling a couple of basses to finance, but the extra cash will be hard to justify. Tea and sympathy :-( I'll live.
18. I've recently been trawling these pages for a 6 string and hanging on for end of year finance health check. However, today, dear 6 string sellers, I will have to withdraw myself from the market as my company, who is on track to make a 20% net profit, as they do and more every year, have decided to give me a £91 annual pay rise. I know, I have a job, I have enough basses (except for a 6 string), I could trade one of my existing lovelies, I could spend more time mastering that 4 string fretless, but the gas never leaves you. Thank you for listening.
19. Lovely. What would shipping and tax costs be to the UK?
Just as 'bad' as his last offering unfortunately; not for me. I was watching his 2007(?) Reality tour gig on Sky Arts yesterday, really good - what happened?
Great gig, tour was 2003/4, then he had a heart attack.
