Nearly Dan

Hi Pete g/f and I made it last Saturday. Great night as usual (5th time for us!). Made a change from the Fleece. How was it for you guys? Geoff
  2.
That'll be the hypothermia kicking in
should I be worried about these white patches of skin?
  3. Well it all turned out ok in the end. Wasn't as cold as expected, though fingers felt like blocks of ice after first 2 numbers, then they weirdly warmed up!
  4.
When and where in Bristol is this, mate?
The Henleaze Christmas Festival this Wednesday http://www.henleazechristmasfestival.co.uk...ertainment.html We're on the External Stage in Waterford Road at 7pm.
  5. lots of ideas and support there - thanks. I'll update afterwards (if I have fingers left to type with)
  6.
Here's a photo from a gig I did last weekend, right in the middle of the arctic madness. It was bloody freezing. No gloves, just lots of layers. I jumped up and down on the spot to keep warm.
Some loyal fans there!
  7.
I use pound shop cheapo gloves (Always warm) that i have cut the end of the thumb and first finger off on one glove, so i can hold a pick and i wear them at band practice, its definately a good idea. If you dont use a pick you could always just put gloves on and play like that, i found it actually gave a nice tone which is wierd. Liam
Sounds a great idea. More experiments in tone!
  8.
Make sure you have plans to deal with rain. Is it a covered area, could the electrics get wet. I am sure there are knowledgeable people who can give more advice than I can but wet and damp conditions don't mix well with electricity Electrical safety is key
Checked and it is covered so that's something.
  9.
I played one on Saturday, it was pretty good actually :-) I used the DI option. Never mind the bass though - you'll need fingerless gloves, many layers of clothing, and a silly but warm hat! Jennifer
I have all those, so here goes!
  10.
You lunatic! If ever there was a time for incorporating pyrotechnics into your set, it's now...
Great idea, I'll check it out. Does Maplins do anything?
  11.
Cold on it's own won't hurt your amp (as a rule of thumb, the colder many electronic components get the better they perform). Condensation and humidity however will. If I was determined to do the gig then I think I'd rather risk a DI box than an amp
Thanks - that's true, absolute zero or something. Going DI.
  12.
Get another generator to power some on stage heating! The lights alone will not keep you warm.
Checking with organisers about any heating. doesn't sound promising. It's a community event, with choirs and so forth on before us. Miss Bristol is on doing the prize draw after us, maybe she'll keep me warm
  13. I have an outdoor gig this coming Wednesday, and was wondering.....am I mad? The forecast is for a mere -3 degrees C (Bristol). Besides losing all feeling in my fingers, is my amp going to keep working, what are the risks, will condensation just blow the thing up? What about the bass? There's a PA, so should I just use my DI Box to minimise risk? Or should I cancel?
  14. You have 3 other fingers you could use. A useful exercise to build up more strength in them as the index finger heals
  15.
Ooooo, maybe I'll try and get to The Stables, do you know if it's sold out.....I'll check lol *edit* Not sold out Si
Hi. Did you make it along last night?
  16.
Wow, this thread is OLLLLLD. Thanks for resurrecting it though. I hadn't seen that before - it's ace!!
I should have created a new one, but it's always worth catching that vid. But if anyone can make the 2 remaining UK shows (Bush Hall in London tonight, and Stables, MK Sun) and wants to catch GAD up close and personal, this is your chance.
  17.
Ooooo, maybe I'll try and get to The Stables, do you know if it's sold out.....I'll check lol *edit* Not sold out Si
Go....the show in Bristol was not packed. Really intimate. What's the Stables like?
  18. Went to a small venue in Bristol last night (St Bonaventure Parish Social Club) to see singer/songwriter Jonatha Brooke. She often performs solo, but last night she was playing with a band. The guitarist and drummer and singer come on, and I thinks, aw no bass player? Then on comes the bass player, and it's Gail Ann Dorsey. No kidding! She played beautifully, just playing the songs, and with backing vocals that rivalled the lead artists voice. Had to pinch myself several times, and the g/f got a little bored with my wows! Met Gail afterwards as she packed away her own kit! Really friendly and chatty. 2 more dates left on the tour, Bush Hall in London tonight and The Stable in Milton Keynes on Sunday. They go on to play Europe then the US. http://www.ents24.com/web/artist/77453/Jonatha_Brooke.html
  19. Really looking forward to it. Never seen Doug Wimbush live or been to the venue before.
  20. +1 for Nearly Dan I always catch them when they play Bristol, normally at the Fleece. Next year they are playing what used to be Jesters on Glos Road. I have accosted Pete afterwards, when I'm very drunk...and probably talked absolute rubbish. Sorry! Congrats on the sell-out at the Sage. See you next time :-) Geoff
  21.
I went to see them at SHepherds Bush on Sunday & I'm afraid I was a bit disappointed Sound wasn't brilliant, bass & bass drum very boomy, and SB is normally a good live sound venue. I also got bored rigid in the 20 minute 'Dweezil conducts the band' section in the middle. I saw them last time they were over here (maybe 2 years now?) and, IMHO, they were a million times better. Dweezil's solos were more focussed, band dynamics seemed better and they played a string of tricks with live vids of Zappa himslef which worked incredibly well. This time around it felt much more like a 'tribute band' to me & just made me remember quite how good Frank was live (I saw him a couple of times with Steve Vai on 2nd guitar). However I have to say that the audience were getting into it a lot more this time around so maybe it was just me that thought they weren't as good!
I saw them in Bristol this week, and have to concur. Had seen the Sky Arts concert and was very impressed, but this time they appeared to be going through the motions; the drummer looked like he wanted to be elsewhere, and Dweezil like he couldn't be arsed. Sound was not good, but then the Colston Hall in Bristol is often crap. Not to say there weren't some interesting moments.
  22. Highly recommend these guys, I alway catch them when they play the Fleece in Bristol.
  23. Thanks for the Micro BR. Delivered prompty and just as described. Cheers Geoff
