2.
Finally got my 1990 SR4 back in one piece. The first thing that struck me was how the tone of the G string seemed to lack body compared to the other three strings. I did a bit of digging on the 'net and found several different theories behind the Stingray 4's weak G string one being misalignment with the pick-up's pole pieces. Examining my bass, I found If I play an open G and push the saddle down, the body in that string's tone improves. Does anyone make a replacement pick-up that uses bar magnets that should over-come this problem? Secondly, I really don't like the preamp. I don't know whether they're all like mine but I have to have the bass full up to get any body in the tone and the treble turned right off. If the treble is turned right up, it is ear-piercingly bright. Can anyone recommend a more usable 2 band EQ? Thanks
I think a stingray may be the wrong bass for you. Have you tried a P strung with flats?
  3. If you don't need all those boards, would you be willing to part with one or two? ;p
  4.
Needs more 8x10
you mean stacks of 15's right?
  5.
Shuguang GE-KT88.
these are the ones i'd go for, they sound nice
  6.
Not sure I understand the ground lift thing. Well, I do, but why would it be necessary with a balanced output? Or are we talking about unbalanced DI outputs? I don't have a wide experience of instrument amps but my Ashdown head and Ampeg combo DI outputs are both balanced.
balanced signals are still grounded, sometimes ground current choose not ideal paths and create ground loops resulting in noise

    fabby cheapo phaser
just had a look on ebay, they are cheap aren't they? I have a Pearl 80s phaser and its analogue heaven! Sounds loads better than myt guitarists MXR. Is the Rocktek 9v battery only or can you power em with a multi plug (ie fueltank)?
sell me the pearl ;p
  8.
You can blow 500w rated speakers with a 200w rated amp, because thermal ratings don['t tell you the power it takes to blow a speaker. This is why watt rating have no meaning and thus should be ignored. Clipping does not put out short bursts of DC. This is fact. If you scope it, you do not see a constant flat line above or below 0v which is DC, and you only see a flat top into a purely resistive load, an inductive (such as a speaker) load rounds them off, because the impedance varies with frequency. Basic physics is that if its a waveform, it is alternating, otherwise is isn't a wave, its a flow. Let's see these SPL charts and waterfall plots from the cabs you claim have useable output capacity at 30hz then.
your amp is broken if it's putting out dc
  9. If you want to mod your bass i don't think it'd be a massive hastle putting a headphone amp inside it and running it off a 9v
  10. Aye these used to be mine. Prefered my 215 though haha These we're made in the 90's
  11. impedance. google ohms law
  12.
You are cordially invited over to have a test run on my Aguilar DB-680 + Lab1000 + Bergantino AE410 rig. Maybe it sucks, but to my ears it blows my all valve Ampeg out of the water easily in terms of creamy goodness.
Don't think oli owns an ampeg, he owns lots of amps with proper iron and non sag based power supplys though. Pretty sure you're rig will sound awesome though. The big pentodes sound alot nicer when they distort than the wee 83's in my opinion, they compress in a much nicer way and clip alot more smoothly aswell
  13.
Ok, my best friend is a guitar freak. He always talks about how tube amps are the only way to get a quality sounding electric guitar and how solid state amps are just useless for a guitarist! But I'm a bassist... There are such things as tube bass amps but are they the only way you will reach quality tone to it's highest level... ???
not sure dude, do like valve amps over here in england though ;p
  14.
The light has a dull glow when the amp is switched on and no signal but the harder you push it the brighter the light gets.
light is straight off the mains

    DIY Effects
Hey all! I've been thinking about cutting down the features of my distortion preamp, then finding a way to have one built in to a pedal, because I love the sound of it. Then I saw the schematics... Ooooph! This one is going to need careful planning! I love seeing you guys DIY pedals though. They all look so cool - one of the reasons I wanna have a go. Something very cool about saying 'I made this', or 'ahh no sorry mate, i had this built for me, you can't buy something thisssssssss cool!'
pm me if you want some help with this jazz

    DIY Effects
This is a little gem - Madbean's take on the BBE Sonic Stomp pedal, the 'Bloviator' - a harmonic exciter, adds depth, warmth, presence to everything, for guitar and bass (though only tried on guitar so far) Not much db boost just enhances the highs and lows without scooping the mids. Its a powerful effect but also quite subtle, and when you turn it off everything sounds sad, flat and thin. Great for really enhancing modulation fx too. Can I also say the Madbean PCB's are superb and make soldering onto a small crowded space a real pleasure. Worked first time no nonsense. Will get some sound clips posted up with bass after the weekend.
looks nice, how come you left all the cables so long?
  17. gritty sound will be way louder than the clean one. Using two channels is good to improve s/n ratio and that though
  18. Was watching that, tell us how it sounds. Should have nice mosfets so should be all good!
  19. my favorite combo in the studio is m81 and re20 about 4" each from half way between the cone and the edge
  20. for live use, a 57 is great. It's got awesome rejection and rolls off those pesky lows
  21. Love those picks ups, got a set in my sg. Normally the two darker ones are the shield and the negative end of the pick up so they both go on ground.
  22. a 100k lin would do the job, a limiter after it would be even better
