I'm thinking of starting a "For the Alex Van Halen Detractors". Why is he a crap drummer. I think he's a good drummer, he played all the right things on the VH albums, and he holds time well enough. What's the problem with him?
Maybe this will give you an idea of how crap he is, specially at the end. My main problem with him is that constantly he overplays a lot and don't start me with those misplaced syncopations.

Here is recording of a Chickenfoot's gig, listen how Michael holds it and grooves. The guy can play and I love how you can listen a clear JPJ influence. I wonder if he just kept playing straight notes in VH because of Eddie being a megalomaniac, Alex being a crap drummer or a combination of both.

Good lord I can't believe none of you have even mentioned this beauty. Human Base Roxy B5, you can get this one brand new from Thomann for £944 I'm not going to start raving about it and will let Ed Friedland do the talking.
I loved the early Tribal Tech stuff when he was fresh out of MIT but they lost me after Nomads. Some of th e later jam band stuff just didn't do anything for me at all. 'Bent' has a nice track on it.... 'Its Only Music'? I think (bass takes melody) - its in 3 I think?
Bilbo at this moment I'm listening to that track, definitely one of my favourite tracks. the bass is just so beautifully laid that it's even kind of sexy. Have you listened to "Actual Fiction"? that album it's great too.

Scott Thunes with Zappa 1988 - I love this!
Mcgiver69 replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Dude I've listened to Scott Thunes play with pick and without and he is great!! a truly great musician. Scott is a very weird guy, he once said that he started playing with pick for two reasons: - He wanted to get the sound of another Zappa ex-bassist he listened too and fell in love with the sound. - As the awkward guys he is, he always loved to go against the crowd just for the fcuk of it. He used to play I think was an Ibanez active and he changed everything to P & Jazz basses with pick and Ampeg. At least that's was he said in one of his interviews. -
Ok a couple of faves - Brand new heavies "You are the universe" it's very short but it's the highlight of the song. Solo at 2:04 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dPf9GQEdes...feature=related - Wham "I'm you man" the original long version wit Dion Estus playing a very hot solo at 4:31 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G1K9wX7ZmY - Gil Scott Heron "is that Jazz", this live version doesn't really do justice to the recorded solo but will give you an idea. If you can get the original recording you'll hear a truly great solo. maybe my favourite solo of all times. I don't know her personally but to be honest I prefer her music to Lady Gaga's. She looks like a young lass working her butt off to make it. I like "Guns & Horses" it sounds like good honest pop.

In older models of P-Bass E-A used to sound boomy while D-G sounded a bit thin so the solution was to reverse the pickup, that way they could balance the sound making D-G more bassy and E-A tighter and brighter. I had an old Yamaha with that configuration and the different is noticeable when you test against an old P-Bass.

Totally glad you like it, I loved it but my left wrist can't take slim necks. Hope you give it the play time I couldn't. I'm loving the Yammy it's very comfortable and a joy to play.

Mark, that is quite normal in the NTBT as the treble is set really high I think something like 7k. There is a trim pot in the preamp (little black box) that controls the gain, you could lower the gain. I never dialled the treble more than a quarter and that was more than enough. If you need any help, please let me know.

Hey guys, Looks like Ms Pooley had a baby and wants to spend some time with her newborn. Here is an advert of Mr. Corgan having an open audition for bassist and keyboardist. If you think you can do it and you really want to be next to Billy Corgan this is your chance.
