1.
Does it use 6L6 or 6V6 tubes?
6L6 as far as I know, there's lots of info on the Super 60, 112 & 210 on here, including some very interesting email from the designers: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/amp-owners-clubs/200003-fender-super-60-112-210-owners.html
2. Cheers guys, my joiner brother phoned me just after I posted this and he echoed what was said above, he'll fit it for me next time he's down and I'll just fill the holes when the time to move out comes!
3. I've just bought a Hercules wall hanger as it was a bargain on eBay, but is there a way to mount it to the wall safely without the use of screws? I live in a rented flat and I don't think the landlord would be happy with me drilling 2 holes into the wall. Is there any sort way of gluing it to the wall that will take the weight of my bass, but will also allow me to remove it cleanly if/when I move out?
4. There was a Super 60 on Gumtree Glasgow at the same time as my 112 was posted, and the fella was looking for £300! There's a red knob Twin on eBay just now for £425 I think, I think £150-200 is the going rate for the Supers as there's not a huge demand for them. They can be had for peanuts in the US though!
5.
looks just like mine Jono. Though mine had the guts rewired to sort the drive channel, and some other stuff. Great amps.
I agree Dave, I'm really pleased with it. I only paid £150 for it as well, they can be picked up really cheap. I think the only difference between the Super 60 and the Super 112 is the size of the cabinet, the Super 112 has a larger footprint, the Super 60 is a bit smaller. To be honest, I think I'd rather have the Super 60, this is a bit of a beast to lug about!
6. I gave the amp a clean yesterday evening but waited until today to take some pictures in the natural light. Going over it there were a few little rips in the vinyl but nothing major. The volume knob has been replaced so I'll try to source a proper red knob for it. I think it could do with a service, some of the pots are very scratchy, but everything else seems to work fine. As far as I can tell though, the presence knob does nothing. I've got the bass and mid set to 6 and the treble to 7, and the clean sound really is excellent, even with my cheapy Epiphone SG. The reverb is very subtle, it just adds a tiny amount of spank to the sound. The reviews for the Fender red knobs either fell in the "Great" or "Terrible" camps, but the one constant was that these amps are unbearably loud, and that's definitely true! I actually have the volume knob pointing at the top of the 0, and it's still very loud for home use if you really dig in. I don't even bother with the drive channel, I can't find any setting that's useable at home, even as low as it can be, the windows are shaking. I can bypass that with a decent stomp box though. Overall though, I really like the sound, the only real problem is that I can't stop looking at Telecasters, I think this would really sing with singlecoils instead of humbuckers.
7.
Got any pics/vids? I've seen them for sale as well and wondered what the clean sound was like.
Nothing at the minute sorry, I'll try and get something sorted tomorrow, it needs a clean first. The clean sound's very nice, I'm using it with an SG but I imagine it'd sound best with singlecoils. Apparently with these amps there's very little break up when it's cranked up, but I've yet to test those claims out.
8. Well, I can now join in properly with this thread, as I've just picked up a Fender Super 112, a massive 60W, 1X12 valve combo. I'd been trying to get hold of the seller for ages and only recently had a reply from him, so I went round and checked it out today. The clean channel is brilliant, the drive channel not so much, and there's no master volume to balance the two so there's a huge jump when the drive is kicked in. It's heavy as hell, and incredibly loud, so I'll have to get an attenuator of some sort to be able to drive the tubes at low volume. Despite these niggles, I actually really like it, I mainly bought it on the strength of the clean sound, it's nice with my SG. Pics will follow once I've given it a clean!
9. Cheers for your responses guys. I'm hopefully going to check out a different amp tomorrow so this whole thread may be pointless, but if I don't like it then I may go and have a look at the Laney. I'll definitely speak to Flynn amps though if any work needs done, or even if I just want to get the amp serviced, I have a suspicion that the amp I'm going to see tomorrow hasn't been for a check up recently.
10. I bought this on eBay at the weekend and later the same day found a webstore that sells "batwing" style scratchplates specifically for Epiphone G400 models which is what I've been after for a while, so this/these are surplus to requirements. When I get home I'll steal the picture from the eBay listing and post it up on here, but it's your standard half sized Epiphone Sg scratchplate in 3-ply white/black/white, tenon cover (for between the neck pickup and the end of the fretboard) is single ply white. Only looking for what I paid for it, which is a tenner posted. Cheers!
11. Has anyone had any experience putting new covering onto a guitar amp? I've found a nice Laney valve combo for sale locally, but I'm not too keen on the new orange and purple vinyl the seller has put on it. Hey, I'm in Glasgow, maybe it was used for gigging in some of the Lodges! It's a good price, but I'd quite like to restore it back to it's original black, or possibly even tweed. Is it difficult to do? Will I electrocute myself taking it apart if I buy it? Or is it something the furniture upholsterer round the corner may be able to do?
12. Well, Santa came and brought my Schallers, so I spent yesterday morning drilling my headstock and fitting the new tuners. They look brilliant and they're rock solid, fired on a new set of 11s and spent all day yesterday bending the sh*t out of them, and it's still in tune, unbelievably happy with them, and pretty pleased with my fitting skills, a lot easier than I thought.
13.
Had a red knob "evil" twin for years, loved it, but it was way too loud so i traded it in for a Vox instead. have now got another red-knob fender, which is like a twin cut in half, and currently so pickle brained that i can't remember what it's called. It is drowning in my leaky studio, so probably best i forget about it.... Think it's a super 60? Had lots of work done on it to make it sound more like a twin. it worked.
The "something more interesting" I mentioned earlier in the thread was a Fender Super 112 from the same range as the Super 60, but as yet the seller on Gumtree hasn't replied to any of the 10 or so emails I've sent him, so it looks like that's a no go
14. Thanks for all your advice fellas, I reversed the saddle and it worked a treat! BRX, it wouldn't have been the string itself, this is a new-ish set and I had the same problem with the ones it came with too.
15.
Move the bridge back a few mm.
As JapanAxe said, that's not really feasible. I'd need to dowel the bridge studs and then re-drill it, and I don't have the necessary skills, tools or patience, and the guitar itself isn't worth the cost of having someone else do it for me.
16.
Sharp at which fret(s)? 12th fret - can you reverse the saddle piece to put the edge further back? Lowest frets - you might need to take the action down at the nut, using the appropriate nut file and plenty of care and patience!
Sorry, should've mentioned it's at the 12th fret, although from about the 7th fret upwards it's noticeable when playing single notes, chords aren't as bad. I'll take a look tomorrow and see if I can reverse the saddle.
17. No jokes please! I've just been intonating my SG and even with the saddle as far back as it'll go, the G is still slightly sharp. All the other strings are near-enough dead on, is there anything I can do to get it in tune?
18. I had a Blues Jr that I picked up second hand for about £200, though that was about 8 years ago now. It was a great wee amp, lovely tones, even with the crap selection of guitars I had at the time. My only criticism is that there was no line out for an extension can, but that's a feature on the new models. I've been looking at getting a new Blues Jr but can't quite afford it, but I think I've found something altogether more interesting, watch this space!
19. Holy smokes, that's awesome!
20. Cheers for the recommendations guys, I went for the Schallers in the end, there were a lot of good reviews online. I'll not get them til Christmas though, so I'll just have to deal with these crappy Grovers for the next month!
21. Can anyone recommend a decent set of 3x3 guitar tuning keys? I've got an Epiphone SG and the kidney bean Grovers on it are garbage. Ideally I'd like a set of 'tulip' style tuners, and I've been looking at Schaller 520 ST6Ks and the Kluson M33VNs, but I'd be happy to look at other types just as long as they keep my guitar in tune!
22. And after. As you can see, the red is a lot more muted. The eagle-eyed amongst you will notice that there's some scratches on there. The process involved attaching a green Scotchbrite scouring pad to the sander and very slowly and gently reducing the shine on it. Afterwards, I used car buffer to bring back some (but not all) of the shine, and get rid of the scratches. The process was quite lengthy, and I ran out of decent light to get some shots after the polishing was done.
