1. Just hoping to bounce my mad uninformed ideas of the experts ... We play rock in pubs, PA only takes vocals and currently consists of a Yamaha EMX512, 2 Mackie C300z passives and a Mackie SRM350 active being used as a monitor. Problem is there's only a 7 band eq on the EMX and it's not enough for every situation we encounter. I've looked at using an external eq with the EMX and it's going to be a lash-up, so don't fancy it. Also if we're going to have 1 rack component we might as well go rack entirely, but I'm trying to avoid having some huge rack setup we can't store or transport easily. Ideally I'd want to fit 2 x 2U rack cases. The PA's only handling 2 mics (lead vocal & BV) and an occasional acoustic guitar, so the mixing requirements are simple, and we don't have anyone running the sound for us. So I can't see the point of a mixer as such. My theory is - 4 channel mic preamp into a 2 x 31 EQ. Take 1 channel from the EQ to the active monitor, take the other channel to a power amp to run the FOH speakers. Would this work? If it would, any recommendations on components. Got my eye on a dbx 213 for the EQ, other than that haven't looked.
2. Does the Penn preamp have XLR inputs round the back, or is it only 1/4" jacks? Can't find anything about it via Google.
3. Interesting comparison of value between these two auctions that both ended today. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SQUIER-SQ-P-BASS-JV-...N-/300475774803 £415 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120629011031 £430 Am I right in thinking the white one is a 57 RI?
4.
Damn, got excited thinking it was that 8 string job, hagstrom gets me everytime
There's an 8-string on ebay in the US, only $1100. I've got "Hagstrom bass" on my saved search list, most of what comes up is in the US, or the new ones. One day my bargain Hag will come along (only been looking 10 years so far).
5. Whenever I look at for sale ads for non-US Fender basses, I'm comparing the price to what I paid for my 89 MIJ standard P. And generally that means I think whatever I'm looking at is over priced. So either my sense of relative values is way out of whack, or I got more of a bargain than I thought. So, here's the question. If you saw an MIJ standard (not 60s/70s reissue) P and and MIM standard P in similar used condition in a sale or auction, which would you expect to fetch more? And just to make it more interesting, add in non-JV MIJ Squiers, where do they sit in the hierarchy?
6. Really can't understand why people won't ship abroad. I cut out dangerous places like Russia and Africa, but I've shipped basses to Spain, Italy and Australia without any problems. It's no more problem to arrange a courier and places like Australia seem to have more money than us and a currency advantage. Basschat is ok to sell on, but there's a limited number of people buying and a lot selling.
7. Bach do a range of slab single coil tele copies. Don't have one myself, but I've heard lots of good things about them, and they're cheap, so a good base for upgrades if you want to. http://www.bachmusik.com/en/music-instrume...del-bach-bpb-60 They also do F*nderbirds http://www.bachmusik.com/en/music-instrume...s/model-bach-ft
8. Pubs are closing, but generally, at least round here, they reopen again under new management/ownership, so I don't know that the total estate has really declined that much. The success of a pub as a music venue really depends a lot on the landlord. We've found a couple that put on music weekly, cultivate a clientele that wants to listen to music and actually do the simple basics of promotion, such as saying "we've got a great band on Saturday, why don't you come" to anyone who comes in the previous week. The rest think sticking a band up a dark corner every third Wednesday when the wife doesn't have PMT will somehow compensate for the pub not having regular customers, except the four the landlord is talking to when you arrive, and who leave at the first sign of a guitar case. "Proper" music venues prefer tribute acts and want cover bands to bring them some customers on dead nights like Tuesday. Swivel on that.
9. Problem, the Grabber/G3/Ripper has a wider body than other basses, standard cases don't fit. You might find a second-hand original case, or Epiphone equivalent, on eBay if you're patient, but they tend to be expensive and in the US. With the Epi ones you might need some extra foam padding. Apparently Coffin make a case that fits, if you can put up with the shape. I saw someone on Talkbass said an Epi EB-3 case fit their Grabber, but I'd check that one carefully. So, your best bet is to wait till it comes, take some measurements, and then check the internal dimensions of anything you think about buying. Also check ebay, and have a trawl round threads on Talkbass. And worth asking in the Gibson forum on Last Outpost http://bassoutpost.com/index.php?board=3.0
10.

Those Rivertone basses are handmade one-off's. Look beautiful if you've got £600+ to spare and can wait 9 months.
11. "I can a maika di accordian, I can a maika di guitarre, iss alla da same"
12.
Nah, it's so you can get a good lead tone. You know, for solos? What do you mean it isn't the same word?
Oh, got it. That's like those Gibson bass pickup switches marked Rhythm and Treble.
13. You just have to love those Italians http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=280565084297
14.
What about this one? http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/web/o...asses/item/6818
Weeeeee, they know how to charge there. £795 for a 70s Ibanez Jazz copy??? 15. "Plenty of lead on it" Is that for heavy metal?
16. Never really liked Jamiroquai before, but they were easily the best band musically on the show. Quite liked the songs, which I didn't know. I guess if you were in your mother's womb in the 1980s, music would have sounded like Everything Everything. I'm sure I saw someone with a Mustang ...
17.
i bought one of these the other week as a replacement for my old precision, i really like it very well made and the intonation is fine i heard alot of people say is hard to achieve with these type of bridges and its a nice sound i was toying with buying a seymour duncan antiquity II for it but theres no saying it will be any better as it sounds pretty good good luck with the sale!
Just sold on the Antiquity I bought for my 51 RI P as I didn't find it was an improvement. Having put the stock pickup back, I'm wondering what I thought the problem was. Shielding the control cavity helps a lot. The one problem with the 51 is the slab body, I'd love to have the 54 contour. Not sure I'm man enough for a pink bass though.
18. Antoria Les Paul. Always get itchy bidding fingers for these, for some reason. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=270641866628
19. Wouldn't put it past Gibson to stamp it the wrong way up. EDIT for sensible reply. None of the Ripper/G3/Grabbers I can see on Flyguitars, which is as good a source as any, has Gibson stamped on the bridge cover. Looks like it might be off an SB 300 or 400. http://www.flyguitars.com/gibson/bass/SB.php If you ask on the vintageguitars forum or last outpost, you should get a definitive answer. 20. The jack was loose on my 51 RI P. Those are a nightmare to sort out, no chance of getting fingers in, but I managed to wedge a pair of long nose pliers inside the jack socket to hold it while another pair turned the nut. Think the pliers came from Poundland or similar.
21. Everyone has these now, apparently (well, I just bought one). http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=power+supply
22. I've been surprised how little difference weight and size make, it's value (insurance) that racks the price up. Just don't use Parcelforce.
23.
I'll chuck the Markbass combos into the mix. I've never had any trouble being heard, usually the opposite.
Another vote for Markbass. I bought a CMD121H on here. I can carry it with one hand, it's never not been loud enough and it solved several problems I've had with other amps, for instance, it sounds just as good at low volume as it does loud.
24. We've been filmed twice with a domestic camcorder, don't know which make or model, but nothing that special. The first time was in a pub in a fairly small enclosed space, where the camera had to be close up, and the sound was terrible. The second was a much larger space where the camera was back with the soundman, and higher up than us. That worked pretty well, though the treble was quite harsh. So I put the video in an editor and saved the audio to a wave file, took that into Audacity, or similar, cut the treble, boosted the bass (of course) and added some compression, then imported the wave file back into the video, and muted the original track. The results of that are pretty good for sound, though I haven't attempted to correct for the stage lighting that left me in shadow for most of the set.
25. This is seriously expensive and you can try it out in Finland. It's not really worth that, is it? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Aria-Pro-II-Bass-SB-...=item3cb10e7add
