1. I have exactly the opposite complaint from the OP, the for sale section is far too effective and over the last 6 months or so seduced me into buying 3 basses I don't really need, a Big Muff I'll use for one song, if it's in the set, a feedback destroyer, a combo and a cab. And tonight someone from Basschat came to my house and walked off with one of my basses and left me a load of useless money, which I'll probably waste on booze. I would complain in capitals but I can't find the capsLOCK ... OH, NO WAIT ....
2. Mick just left the house with my 51 P after a coffee and a very pleasant chat. Made up his mind very quickly, no messing about, paid in cash and saved me a lot of packing by driving from Nottingham to pick it up. Thanks Mick, hope you have fun with it. Phil
3. There's huge modding potential Talking Teddy Bear with Microwaveable Lavender Bag
4. It's a trust rod, though, how can you not believe him?
5.
Why would anyone publicly admit to having kept this monstruosity for 20 years?
It's taken him that long to pluck up the courage to put it up for sale?
6. I was convinced that would be a "lawsuit" copy till I saw the MIJ on the neck. Just puzzled now why you don't say Fender anywhere in the description.
7. It's a sobering thought that I could buy a Ripper every 3 months and just about be keeping up with my wife's tobacco habit. And it's less likely to kill me.
8. Now sold. Thanks for all the interest and various offers.
9. For most of this year I've been fairly settled on 2 gigging basses, standard P and 51 P. Then I decided the 51 P wasn't working in the band, so was looking at Basszilla's Ripper as a replacement. Then that fell through, so I bought a cheap SX P as a backup while I sold the 51 and found something else. Didn't like the SX at all, started modding it which went wrong and meanwhile found an MIM Jazz I quite like. Then the Ripper comes available again. And in the background through all this is a Dearmond Starfire which doesn't get much gig time, but it's nice to have a short scale semi. So in devising a strategy to replace one bass, I now have 5 basses, one body, and two necks in various states of disrepair. The 51 P is in the for sale section, not sure what else may join it. I'm lucky, I like my job and I think they'll let me keep it.
10.
This is an excellent point and it's something I really support. I have been very lucky with a few deals on this board, for instance my Alembic Epic 5 string which cost me £600! When I decided to sell it, I offered it for sale at £600. I could have easily asked double and probably taken that. However, I appreciated the fact that I had been lucky, and it's good to pass on a good deal. Someone else gets to experience a great bass and I've not lost out on it.
The Basschat history of that bass seems to have been a fairytale dream come true for everyone involved and it's to your credit that you did what you thought was right. Even so, as a principle pricing under the going rate isn't entirely without consequences. One person puts up a bass at a seriously undervalued price, someone else finds their perfectly reasonable price for a similar bass undercut. And maybe they weren't so fortunate when they bought theirs and can't afford to take the hit. (Not saying that happened with the Alembic, they're scarce enough it's unlikely to be an issue). There's also been some criticism of people buying on here and selling on eBay. Well, a lot of people say they sell on here because they don't like the fees and the risk on eBay, so they'll take a lower price. If someone else is prepared to take the risk and pay the fees, seems fair enough that they get a better price. I wouldn't condone anyone making a business out of it, I agree it would generally be fairer to at least offer it here first and I wouldn't want something I'd sold to appear on the bay two days later, but if people are sensible I can't see the problem. Of course, any proceeds on selling gear should go back into the Basschat economy. Spending it on women (or men) and booze would be unthinkable.
11.
amazing basses, such a fantastic sound from these. er, your bridge cover is on the wrong way though
You're right there. Have to say I don't like the look of it at all the right way round. Turning it round would mean new screw holes, though the old ones would still be covered. One of the screw holes is clean, the other chipped slightly round the screw.
12.
That is sexy as
Thank you kind Sir. Already being offered trades. Really do need to sell this for hard cash I'm afraid, the bass and amp cupboard is full.
13. NOW SOLD. It's a 2004/5 R serial in Butterscotch Blonde, which is the modern, striking, vibrant translucent yellow, not the pale wishy-washy almost-beige the older ones had. Slab body, nice chunky neck you can really get your hands around, no skinny girly Jazz necks here. Or, in official Fender terminology: Thick "C" Shape, Fingerboard Radius: 7.25" Radius (184 mm), Nut Width: 1.625" (41.3 mm). Reverse tuners, lovely maple fretboard, skunk stripe, plays like a dream and the single coil pickup sounds all growly and turns girls' knees to jelly. (I'm getting carried away now). Pretty much stock, except a cover over the 2-saddle bridge and copper shielding in the control cavity and under the pickup, so it no longer hums like a box of badgers. Oh, and Dunlop straplocks. Strung with TI Flats, which suit it rather well. These have been up for some eye-watering prices recently, on the grounds they're no longer for sale new in the shops. This is a much more realistic £425 collected from darkest Warwickshire or courier would be another £20 in the UK. No case, but double boxed for transit. Pictures, in case you don't believe me. First picture is a more accurate rendition of the colour than the lighter yellow ones.
14. OK, 2 pages in let's try and answer Happy Jack's question. There are some things we know will happen next year - VAT will go up, gas (the stuff you cook with, not the irrational desire to buy basses) will go up, it seems pretty inevitable more people will lose their jobs and most of those that have jobs are unlikely to be getting massive pay rises. Other things may affect us, we just don't know what will happen to the economy here or in other countries, but it's looking shakey in several places. By itself a VAT increase could actually help the second hand market - if new prices go up, there's more room for used prices to rise and some people who would have bought new go used instead, which increases demand. But all the other bad stuff going on is likely to cancel that out. More high end and vintage basses will come up for sale at optimistic prices. I think we can assume that the number of people buying that kind of bass to play will decline, so the market will depend on whether they're still seen to have investment potential, or represent some kind of hedge against returning inflation. But no one with any sense is going to buy an investment bass that is already at the top of its price potential, so sellers will have to lower their expectations, which will affect confidence in the market, which will reduce prices further. So until that stabilises, keep your vintage bass under the bed if you possibly can. There are a few places, such as Australia, where the currency is relatively strong and basses for sale in Europe and the US look increasingly good value. So anyone prepared to ship abroad will find it easier to sell than those who only sell to the UK. At the low end of the market - as JMT says, sub £500 - things could actually pick up as people realise there's nothing wrong with MIM Fenders and even Squiers, and at least they're affordable. Basschat will become a Marxist paradise where basses are exchanged freely, regardless of monetary value. None of this will come true.
15. WTF has he listed it under Accessories/Strings? No wonder even sober people get confused. I thought the acoustic guitars listed under Bass were bad enough.
16. But can't you feel the watchers? the eyes boring into the back of your head? Then there's the voices. And the bells.
17. 100W isn't ideal for gigs, but I wonder if the 515 is worse because it's pushing a 15" speaker? I bought a Crate BT100, which is 100W + 12", on eBay for £80 to use at home. Then I took it to a band practice and was surprised how loud it was. Took it to a gig in a smallish pub and was quite upset that it not only coped, but got more compliments on its tone than my 400W Markbass combo gets. Depends how much you could get for the Ashdown, but there might be affordable alternatives for not much money. Obviously be careful though, as you could end up worse off.
18. After reading this thread I downloaded the trial version of Transcribe. Have to say it does a very good job of isolating the musical bass frequencies so even the bass drum doesn't get in the way of hearing the bass line. Much better than Best Practice and much easier to use (though BP is free). Slowing down also does a better job of maintaining the pitch - the vocals do actually sound something like the original. Not sure about chord identification, that seems like it's going to be too much like hard work, but being able to hear the bass line clearly almost removes the need for that anyway. As a result spent an hour on a small part of Pink's "Try Too Hard", which had completely eluded me in the past, and cracked it. Pity we don't play that any more.
19. Bought MIM Jazz from Alistair, lovely bass, packed double boxed, nice guy to deal with, very pleased all round.
20.
HAHA I think he wrote the review on HC http://www.harmonycentral.com/products/100052
I wondered about that, but now I don't think so. I found the Google cached version in the old format and it was written 21 Nov 2005, which doesn't give a lot of time for the eBay seller to buy it in a shop the same year. In the review, he got it from a geetard who kept it in his closet, on ebay it's an ex-rental bass and the seller kept it in his closet. So it's more of a closet bass than a ghost, which all adds to the value. Looks like the EMG Select is a coincidence, or the ebay listing is even more fictional than we thought. And why post a broken link to a not-that-good review you wrote yourself? The only other reference to Vogue guitars I can find is this thread about a couple of Les Paul copies, which suggests there might be real wood involved in the body. And of course, made by Matsumoko, who else ... http://www.musictoyzforums.com/showthread....-vogue-les-paul
21. This is probably too late to help, but I didn't see it before .... We're using an SRM350 as a stage monitor. It's ok, but it's only a 10" speaker + horn and 165W output, so really depends what you want to do with it. It just about copes as a monitor, don't think I'd want to rely on it as front of house PA. The SRM 450 gives you 12" speaker and much more power.
22. I've never really understood why you need an Amplug or anything similar if you're using a laptop. I just plug the bass straight into the mic input. It works well enough that it's not worth spending £40 to fix.
23. If you go the Tux or GuitarPro route then you can get tabs that the software will play - http://www.gprotab.net/index.php Also if you're playing along with Youtube, or mp3s, or anything on a PC, I find the pitch is slightly off, probably something to do with the soundcard. It's not a lot, but enough sometimes to throw you out if you're trying to pick something up by ear. If I tune to the tuner built into Guitar Pro (there's probably one in Tux, or there's other guitar tuner programmes) it sounds a lot better.
24. There's something wrong on Travelling Alone, the bass and guitar are out of whack somewhere. It should sound like this ... Pretty good version of Crossroads, compared to some he's done. And at least he's playing Gibsons.
25.
He needs one with a Glitter finish.
You'll have the PC brigade on us in a minute.
