1. I've got a Fender 51 RI P in Butterscotch Blonde (or yellow as it used to be known), which I'm struggling to love as much as my standard MIJ P. So rather than go through the buying and selling loop, I wonder if anyone would be interested in trading. It's great to play if you like old school precision necks in maple. It currently has a Seymour Duncan Antiquity single coil pickup, though I still have the Fender orginal. Lots of growl, which doesn't really do it for me, I'm more of a thumper. Control cavity is shielded with copper sheet and I've also fitted a bridge cover, which isn't in the photo. If anyone is seriously interested I'll but up some newer pics. I'm looking for an MIJ 60s or 70s Reissue Fender, probably P, but might consider a Jazz. Or something else, so long as it has 4 strings, not too thin a neck, frets and is worth somwhere in the region of £400. I'm in darkest Warwickshire near Stratford, but am quite happy about arranging a courier if necessary. Here's a pic for starters.
2. Old thread on Talkbass, isn't a lot of help, but suggests it's confused with "Bruce Palmer Modal Tuning" for guitar, which Steve Stills used in CSN. http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=526981
3. For under £400 you should be able to find a used DeArmond Starfire. They're well thought of, even by fans of the Guild original. And then you can put in a pair of Hamon Dark Star pickups, or look for one that has them already.
4.
Yes, it was the Peggmeister's first Fairport album. Ashley Hutchins, and Sandy Denny had left by then and Richard Thompson was to leave soon after. He's still one of my favourite bass players active today and has been a big influence to me since those very days.
Never got over Denny, Thompson and Hutchins leaving. Without them FC was an empty shell, even if some of the individuals were good musicians.
5. "David Sutch called Ronnie and asked if he would reform The Savages with Pete Phillips for “The London Rock and Roll Show”, the first music show to be staged at the Wembley Empire Stadium. The show featured some of the truly great artists including Bill Haley and the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Bo Diddley. Screaming Lord Sutch and the Savages brought the house down, along with Jack the Ripper, Joe Brown, Billy Fury and the House Shakers. " Which fits with this band list Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages #22 (August 1972) • Dave Sutch (Lead Vocals) • Ronnie Harwood (Rhythm Guitar/Vocals) • Sid Meadows (Bass) • Pete Phillipps (Drums) http://www.ronnieharwood.com/html/chapter_3.html http://thebookofbands2.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
6. "After their second trip to Holland, Southend resident, Heinz Burt, the former bassist with 60’s outfit The Tornados, contacted the band [Dr Feelgood]. Heinz had long since reverted to a day job selling advertising space in the local paper, but continued to supplement his income by occasional appearances on the revival circuit. "He suggested that the band became his backing group for a few gigs, and, with the chance to play still all too rare for the band's liking, they agreed. The union was short lived, but culminated in a memorable appearance alongside Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley and MC5 at the Wembley Rock'n'Roll Festival in 1972." 7.
I'd be inclined to suspect that if a pretty nondescript Jap J copy gets bid to nearly £200 with nearly 5 days left to run, then there's a bit of shill bidding going on. The private listing means you can't check the recent Ebay activity of the other "bidders". Expect it to sit at £180 until the end of the auction, when (if the seller's lucky) a real bidder will get it for £180.01, or it will "sell" at £180 to be almost immediately relisted due to some spurious excuse. Unless of course I'm being wildly cynical.
Ended on £180. Not relisted, yet.
8.
Here's a couple of nice Fujigen Jazzes - first of all a 79/80 CSL, like mine only blacker: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=220646803893 Highly recommended if it's anything like mine - it's an astonishingly good player & probably my favourite bass.
It's a private listing. The shame
9. Wouldn't he have got more by selling the separate items?
10.
If you can believe what you see - someone got a bargain!
Never seen one go that cheap, though low feedback, poor pictures and limited description didn't help.
11.
ahh, it should work fine then, but I could test it tomorrow for you (if I remember).
If there's a problem I would think it would be impedance. I tried using the mics plugged straight into my laptop with Audacity and there's no volume, whereas a bass plugged straight in works fine. We're talking £25 difference, I should stop being a cheapskate and buy the +mic one.
12. Having paid £400 for mine about a year ago, I was shocked what this went for. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...e=STRK:MEWAX:IT
13. The mics have batteries, so I guess power isn't a problem.
14. Question for anyone who has a Line 6 BackTrack, either version. Can you connect a microphone to the guitar input? I've got a couple of dual impedance condenser boundary mics and I wondered if I could use them for recording into a Backtrack, rather than buying the more expensive version with the mic built in?
15. They're even on Wikipedia ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigsty_Hill_Light_Orchestra Remember the Ballcockaphone ... how we laughed ...
16.
Epiphone seem to get a lot of votes!
I had a MIJ Epi EB3 and an MIK white TBird, both of which were very nice basses. With Epi, where it's made and when is important. My worst was a 1970s Eko Manta. Made of balsa wood and completely dead.
17. I've got a Fender-badged gig bag which isn't the most padded thing you'll see and there's a short run of stitching gone on the binding (just cosmetic), but it's better protection than nothing and fits a pbass. PM details if you want it.
18. Silent Way gone, everything else still here. No Pigsty Hill LO fans? I can't believe that.
19.
I must be too young to understand the appeal of that sound. It sounds to me as if he is playing a different song to everyone else while trying to play every note possible. That's just me.
It's Zappa. Everybody is playing a different song from everybody else.
20. Ironically the change-the-world faction in music have provided a great outlet for protest, which governments can ignore completely. People all sit in a field together, listen to some really angry lyrics, interspersed with inter-song rants and some heavy duty swearing, go "Yeah, man, that's terrible, someone should absolutely do something about that." and go home feeling like they've done something. If we could persuade the Taliban to hold a couple of big concerts, preferably with Bono involved, we could bring the troops home tomorrow.
21.
Al Stewart's Past Present & Future is a great album and a real blast from my past, but as I've just given away all my old vinyl (hadn't played it in 15 years and I'm moving house) starting a new collection seems counter productive. Some absolute other gems in there too, good luck with the sale.
I saw him play in a club in Oslo of all places, 1972 probably. Stunning guitarist and really haunting songs. It's horrible getting rid of this stuff, but like you I just don't play vinyl any more.
22.
Have you got any other Stephen Stills? I'm looking for Stephen Stills II. Also The Byrds. I love my vinyl
No, sorry, only bought the first Stills. No Byrds either, never quite got excited enough about them to lay out money. I do have a Buffalo Springfield compilation called "Expecting to Fly". Our band does "For What It's Worth", though not much like the original.
23. I have a huge collection of vinyl that really needs to find a new home. This is just an initial selection, there's more. Mostly these were bought in late 60s or early 70s. Covers all have some wear at the edges, most of the inner sleeves are discoloured, discs look to be in good clean condition, but haven't played any of them for a long time. Any noticeably worse condition identified in listing. I'll post in proper card mailers. £4.50 per record, including postage in the UK mainland. Willing to do a deal for multiples, or if anyone wants the lot. Miles Davis - Miles in the Sky (cover creased, sleeve torn, some wear to disc) [s]Miles Davis - In a Silent Way[/s] [s]Miles Davis - Bitches Brew[/s] John McLaughlin - My Goal's Beyond (small tear on front of cover) John McLaughlin - Extrapolation [s]John McLaughlin & Carlos Santana - Love, Devotion, Surrender (no inner sleeve)[/s] Graham Collier - Songs for My Father Feat. Harry Beckett (sticky label mark on cover) Camel - MoonMadness Camel - The Snow Goose Camel - Mirage Santana - Santana (1969) (cover discoloured) Santana - Abraxas Santana - Caravanserai (cover creased) [s]Free - Fire & Water[/s] Jethro Tull - Stand Up (Original Chrysalis gatefold "pop up" cover. Tear on front, generally poor condition outside, sleeve torn, inside of cover good) Jethro Tull - Stand Up (Australian-made Reprise label version, single unfolded cover without pop-up) Al Stewart - Past, Present & Future Nik Kershaw - The Riddle Gerry Rafferty - City to City Brian Ferry - Another Time, Another Place [s]Rufusized - Rufus feat. Chaka Kahn[/s] Stephen Stills - Stephen Stills (sleeve creased and discoloured, scuff on side 1 across 1 track) Stevie Wonder - Talking Book Neil Diamond - Hot August Nights Fairport Convention - Fairport Convention (with Judy Dyble & Ian MacDonald) (cover creased, surface marks on record) Fairport Convention - What We Did on Our Holidays (with Sandy Denny & Ian MacDonald) Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking Fairport Convention - Leige & Lief Sandy Denny - Like an Old Fashioned Waltz [s]Cream - Live Cream (Vol I) (surface marks on record)[/s] Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra - Phlop! [s]BBC Radiophonic Workshop - Dr Who: The Music Vol I and Vol II[/s] Pippin - Original Cast Album (Musical by Stephen Schwartz)
24. Having acquired an Eden Nemesis cab, it just struck me that "Eden Nemesis" as a brand sounds stronger/cooler than plain "Eden", or even "David Eden". Not sure if that works anywhere else. Lakland Skyline? G&L Tribute?
