Please keep opinions regarding price to PM.
Agreed, however I kind of asked for it by the "what they've been going for" claim, which is only verifiable if you've been watching eBay every day for months. I've self-censored that out of my post, but I can't take it out of the quote attached to the post you edited, so could you take it out of there too ...

If you have only 3 songs in drop D, I can't see why you would need to relearn all the other songs, or take 3 basses to gigs. I used to use drop D for 2 songs out of 20. I just took 2 basses to gigs, tuned one drop D, used the other for the rest of the set. If there had been a problem with the main bass, which there never was, it would have taken 30 secs at most to retune the dropped one. Incidentally, string spacing and neck width on 5-strings can vary quite a lot, depending on the model, so it might be worth looking again.

Here's a bass that will really get you noticed. Flawless white finish, classic Thunderbird shape and powerful pickups that leave guitarists trembling. Twin pickups with VVT controls; roll off the neck for deep growl, or roll off the bridge for a bit more bite. Alder body, very comfortable bolt-on maple neck, rosewood board. Strung with Rotosound Jazz flats and a spare set of roundwounds thrown in. Action is good, everything works. Previous owner said it had been his backup bass and had very little use. I can believe that as there is scarcely a mark on it. The only thing is he put the extra strap button on the body under the neck, but he put it so close to the neck I couldn't get the straplock to work. So I moved it down a bit and you can see where it used to be. In normal use that is covered by the strap anyway. It's fitted with Schaller black straplocks, which are included, and it comes with a Ritter TBird gig bag, which gives it plenty of protection. Just one minor issue there - the main zip is fine, but the accessory pocket zips are sticky and tend to jam when closing. I'd like to get around [s]£290[/s] £270 for it. Also might consider a trade of similar value, but it will have to be something P-bassish, or possibly hollow-body or les paul. Pickup is available, I'm west of Stratford on Avon, about 30mins from J15 on the M40. Or will courier for £20 in the UK. Pictures

I've got a set of TIs string through on my 51 RI P. I suppose one advantage of the crappy bridge is the angle over the saddle is quite shallow.
This is tempting fate... I'm now waiting for the first.... "I'd been playing for twenty minutes and I could play Portrait of Tracey" (or any other nightmare part you care to mention)
My son, aged 17 or so, picked up bass for the first time and learned the entire Stone Roses catalogue, by ear, in about a fortnight. My suggestion he might also want to learn a few basics fell on deaf ears. Later he went to join an originals band and came unstuck when they produced chord charts for their material, and he had no idea what to do with them.

Once I switched one bass to flats, the others followed, an any new bass gets flats straight off. As has been said, there's no substitute for trying a set, see how you get on, and then maybe try others. If your budget is flexible TIs are nice, but pricey. Rotos are cheaper, I've had a set on my P for years and they're good there. Didn't like Chromes, but you might.
This thread isn't too old so I hope no one minds me opening it up again. To anyone who has bought a Bass from Bach Music, what was the packing like? Any danger of receiving a damaged instrument? Interested in their black 4004, looks like a solid canvas to mod. Thanks
There's quite a lot of people on the Bass Outpost that bought BAchs, including people in the US, with no reports of any arriving damaged. The NonReverse TBird is now in the Bach catalogue, though it says Sold Out. http://www.bachmusik.com/en/c100211/model-td/ Rob (who's in Holland) on the Outpost is setting up as an importer. Could have been worse. Could have been a rap for indecent exposure.

Paul McCartney in Them Crooked Vultures!!
spinynorman replied to spinynorman's topic in General Discussion
I found the TCV album took a lot of plays to get into, you have to really want to spend the time with it. I had the same problem with Era Vulgaris, there's nothing immediately accessible there, unlike Songs for the Deaf and Lullabies. With McCartney, they could have been Those Straight Puffins. -
I really don't understand this "play all the ones you can find till you find one you like" mantra. I've had several basses that felt and sounded wonderful, till I got them into a band setting, and then they just didn't work. I found my MIJ Standard P languishing on eBay one Monday lunchtime with no bids and 20 mins to go. The starting price was high for eBay, but well within what the bass was worth. I sniped it by a margin of 35p from one other bidder who had the same idea. Since then it's had 90% of my gigging and rehearsal time, the other 10% being taken up by more exciting basses that I wish worked as well, but don't. There may be eras in USA production that are as well to avoid and MIMs have mixed reviews, but MIJs seem to be pretty consistently ok. So don't muck about, just buy one.

There's a Youtube clip of a live version of Dylan's "It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry". There's a ton of high profile performers on stage, like Clapton, Tom Petty etc. About half way down the comments there's this: "Why do they let that idiot sing? There's ten people on the stage could sing it better than that." Next comment "That's Bob Dylan". "Oh sorry, didn't recognise him. I'm only 12." (actually he said, I'm only young.)

I did once try to play Maggie May with a "proper" bass line. It didn't work.

This piece in NME made me sit up ... http://www.nme.com/news/paul-mccartney/49287 There's various blogs and other on-line things that seem to be taking this at face value. I can't believe McCartney seriously thought he was a contender for the job. When I told my son, his first thought was the same as mine. Grohl didn't have a bass player lined up and, realising McCartney was angling for it, blurted out the first name that came into his head. Later he had to phone John Paul Jones "Hey, JP, I've got a problem ... ". What would TCV have turned out like with McCartney on bass ????
