hmm yeah maybe so! used the P bass at rehearsal again tonight.. and again... soundwise it was bang on... only thing is, compared to the Zon its nowhere near as nice to play!!! Aaaargh!! Got a few gigs away this week so think I'll take both and decide on the night. The other thing, which is stupid really, is that I prefer using the Zon because its much more unusual! The gigs we're doing are heavily populated by fellow musos and i always like to stand out a bit and Precisions are ten a penny!!! haha oh well. peace c
I find my P very easy to play, but then I've never had anything like a Zon, so I don't know what I'm missing. I also don't care about being noticed - well, at least, not for what sort of bass I play. I wouldn't mind being noticed for being a good player, but that's unlikely to happen.

I was thinking about Lollar for my 51 RI P, but in the end I went with an SD Antiquity off eBay which was a lot cheaper, and I didn't have to argue with anyone. Also looked at Fralins, which have a range of hotness options as standard, but hotter wasn't really what I was after. I hope the Lollar works for you.

Actually has the opposite effect on me, a signature really puts me off. It just feels really strange to associate myself with someone else like that. There's a Korean brand called Phil and the logo is pretty close to the way I sign my name, so I could have a signature bass, sort of.

The bass I never wanted was a Fender P, but one came up at a good price and I bought it. Turned out to work better in the band than anything else I had at the time. Since then I've bought numerous other, more exciting basses, in the hope one would turn out better than the boring old P, but they've all ended up back on eBay, apart from a 51 RI P and a Dearmond Starfire, which are hanging on by the skin of their teeth. Now I look down the for sale listings at all the high end stuff people are trying to shift, and laugh. It's a hollow laugh though, because I miss the excitement.

Really you answered your own question - "I took my P bass along and that just seemed to fit better sound wise! ". I had a similar problem. I never wanted a P, but one came up at a price I couldn't miss and, from the moment it came out of the case at the first practice it felt and sounded right in the band. It was a wrench, admitting that the boring old P worked better than basses that appealed far more to my image, but the sooner you admit it, the sooner the pain will go away.

Found this thread while looking for info on a CN serial Fender/"Squier Series" Precision I saw on eBay. There's a fair amount of discussion about them on various forums, but it's difficult to separate assumptions and opinion from fact. The few people who have actually had one seem to like them. The auction had a starting price of £160 and I really had no idea if it was worth that, even with a case. In the end it went for £190, but as the seller hadn't pointed out the Squier Series logo, the winner might not have known what they'd bought. A while ago I bought a Crate BT50 combo. I didn't have high expectations of it - it's 1x12, 50 watts, cost me £80 on eBay, and I just wanted it as a practice/rehearsal amp. A few weeks ago we had a gig in a pub where they'd had complaints about noise, so I took the Crate. All I got all night was people telling me how good the bass sounded, even a bass player from another band asking "where did you get that amp?". On Saturday, in the same venue, with the Markbass combo that cost me 8 times as much, not a word. Grrrrr

Has anyone owned or played an early 90s Fender made in Korea (by Cort I think)? The ones with a big Fender script and small Squier logo on the end of the headstock. I've seen a thread or two on Talkbass with mixed opinions, and some suggestions the bodies are plywood. Just wondering if one came up a a lowish price it would be worth a punt?

The more recent a song is, the less opportunity I find for changing the bassline. Anything by ColdGreenRazorPatrol, just a waste of time trying. But with older stuff we're often doing a cover of a cover anyway, like Johnny Winter's Jumping Jack Flash, or there's 15 live versions, which are all different, so there's more scope. There's a live version of Gimme Some Lovin' by Traffic, which has a reggae feel and the bass riff is heavily disguised, though the organ part is still recognisable. It does sound like they're all stoned and it lasts 9 minutes, so probably not an option for a function band, but it is possible.

Ask this mob, if they don't know, no one will. http://bassoutpost.com/index.php

This gets more obviously ridiculous if you move it to other instruments and genres; for example, cellists are clearly the worst violinists in the orchestra. And of course, Charles Mingus really wanted to be John Mclaughlin, but couldn't cope with the extra strings.

A lot of people seem to see a need to justify their reasons for selling a bass. So you get a large part of the ad saying things like: "It's a great bass, but just not for me, I prefer an xyz because ...". Why do that? Most people on here have sold one or more basses at some time, we know the score, people sell for all sorts of perfectly valid reasons. We expect sellers to describe the bass they have for sale honestly, and if they don't, they'll soon get rumbled. Some ads are a better sell for the bass they're keeping that the one they're trying to move on.

Do they make non-black nylon strings for bass guitar?
spinynorman replied to Cat Burrito's topic in General Discussion
Is this what you mean? They do pink too. http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/products/18...ed_bass_strings -
Did Rafferty do any songs other than Baker Street?

Bought Stan's Markbass CMD 121H combo. Great bloke to deal with and took a lot of trouble over packing and shipping.

Various bits for sale. 2 x .1mfd value Paper in Oil or PIO capacitors. Bought these, didn't use them. They're quite big. £3.50 each posted in UK, or £6.50 the two. [s]Black leather guitar/bass strap. Not padded, just plain leather and adjustable. £5 posted. [/s] 4 Guild bridge saddles, just the saddles, no grub screws. I bought them thinking they might work for a DeArmond Starfire, but the screw threads are different. So probably for Guild bass owners only. £10 posted, a bit less than I paid to get them from the US. [s]1 x 4-string set of long scale round wounds. Don't know make, possibly rotosound. Came from a bass I bought that had been a little-used backup. £1.50 posted. 1 x 4-string set of medium scale D'addario rounds. £1.50 posted.[/s]
