Blues/rock/zappa band wanted for wedding Cardiff June 2 2010
spinynorman replied to OldGit's topic in General Discussion
Watched Roadhouse the other day and was reminded how good Jeff Healy is... Awesome gtr sound. As for Zappa at a wedding.. and for £200..?? I say good luck, it is all yours.
Saw Jeff Healey a couple of times at The Robin in Bilston. Glad I took the chance as he died last year. The cancer finally got the better of him. The thing that I liked about Healey's live show was the variety of material he would tackle - he wasn't just a blues guitarist. -
Finally got time to do the swap last night. First impressions are very good, be able to tell more after practice on Monday, but just seems to be smoother than the stock pickup. I didn't quite realise what I'd bought. I'd found the SCPB-1 Basslines Vintage on GAK for £47 new, so I was bidding with that in mind. The Antiquity is more like £75. Guess I'm not the only one totally confused by the SD range, luckily.

Regardless of whether they're nice basses or not, there's an interesting point lurking in the OP. It's surprising what a vintage bass or guitar needs to be worth today just to have kept up with inflation. Especially anything bought before 1975. There's a gadget here where you can check the current equivalent value of any price from any year. My 1973 Gibson acoustic I just sold did even worse as an investment than my pension.

It's men. We're terrified of commitment. Actually I can understand the guitarist/drummer thing. I was in a band with a good friend, we had quite different musical tastes, which was fine outside the band setting, but in band together we argued and got on one anothers nerves. In the end he left and set up his own band, which was better for both of us, and we're still friends.
I like the stock one but I won an EBay bargain of a Seymour Duncan Antiquity pup for a mere £26. The bass sounds simply awesome now.
I won an Antiquity on eBay last week. Had to pay £28 for mine. I'll get the soldering iron out tomorrow, nice job for a sunny Sunday.

Smash your bass into the drum kit and storm off, shouting "Bleedin' amateurs!" as you go.
Can I join? Little known fact, the phrase 'overrated shoe-gazing toss' was first used by Nostradamus when he predicted the existence of a (and I quote) "pretentious little man with daft hair making films for teenage gofficks and that gimp from AFI" true story.
He did add IMHO though. Very Web 2 was Nostradamus, if you overlook the Latin and rhyming couplets.
It's a real shame that current technology does not permit me to wee into my PC and have it come out of his monitor into his lap. Nice bridge for 51 P. Sent straight away, no problems at all.

Jack Daniels - helps you relax. Doesn't help you play.

I'll take a listen to the clip when I get home, thanks. I like the stock pup sometimes, but in some situations it gets very blurry and seems to overwhelm the mix. I want something a little different from a standard p, but not too much. More thump, less growl (than the stock 51 RI) perhaps (I'm useless at describing tones). I like that colour. I call mine the Yellow Peril.

maybe he plays for pole dancing.

So we had the gig on Saturday, but they wanted it loud. So no chance to try any volume management, though I did turn the tube pre down and that did focus the sound quite a bit. I feel like I'm supposed to like tube tone, but really I don't.

I'm thinking about maybe changing the stock pickup in my Fender 51 RI P. Just wondered if anyone had any experience of or thoughts on the various replacements that are available - Seymour Duncan, Nordstrand, Lindy Fralin ...?? The Fralin's come in several guises - single coil, split coil, overwound. What sort of tonal differences do these make?
I'm currently awaiting delivery of some IT kit from there, from a totally legit company based there, that sells worldwide...they have to sneak their shipments out; currently, my stuff is "awaiting an opportunity" sitting in some apartment in Moscow!!! Don't go there. Depending on location of receiver, possibly offer to ship to EU border state AFTER payment cleared - money just as slow to move, and they worry about getting it rest of way?
Ah, so my instinct to run away very fast was a good one. The first query from there had 0 feedback, so I told him no. Now I think he's sending his friends in. The next shipping query from Mother Russia had 900+ feedback, all got from buying used CDs.
-
I've had an enquiry about shipping a bass to Russia, but when I looked for a courier quote it said customs restrictions won't allow anything to be shipped worth more than £220. Anyone else come across this? Not sure I want to ship to Russia anyway, but the choice would be nice.

I've got a gig on Saturday, so I can take both cabs, but only connect 1 to the amp, see which works best. I was also thinking of turning either the tube or solid state preamp right down, which would cut the volume and maybe help with definition. Interesting no one has suggested new gear, which is good, there's other things I could do with the money.
-
I bought a Crate BT50 on eBay for £80. 50W, 1x12. Has a crazy distortion channel you wouldn't want to bother with and a built in tuner which is a nice idea, but works only adequately. Otherwise, as a straightforward bass amp, it is actually rather good. And it's loud enough for practice with drummer with full kit and guitarist with Les Paul and Mesa amp. Might even use it for a small gig one day.
Put the mids back. And stand the 2x10 on its side, and the 15 in such a way it is at its tallest.
Actually I'm leading you wrong there. Now I think about it, the mids are accentuated, smile's upside down. I did once try a gig with just the 1x15 on its side. I spent most of the time worrying about the amp falling off, it was definitely moving (it's in a rack case). With both on their side stacked I'd be really worried. The cabs being slightly different sizes (thanks Ashdown) doesn't help.

I have a Hartke HA3500 (the old black one), an Ashdown Mag 2x10 (older Chinese "deep" version) and Mag 1x15 (really old English "not deep" version). So it's not exactly a high end rig. We play a range of material from 60s to current and rock to pop, so I need flexibility without too much fiddling about. Main bass is MIJ Precision. What I've found is the current rig is ok if it's a bigger venue and I can get the master volume up to at least 2. In small pubs, where ideally I'd be turning down lower than that, the tone just disappears. This small pub thing seems to be happening a lot. The options I'm wrestling with are: a) The rig's ok, I just using it wrong. Settings I generally use are Tube & SS preamps both on 5, compression off, EQ scooped out the mids (smile), low pass contour +3, high pass -3. There's a Korg DT10 between the bass and the amp. B ) Amp's ok, cabs aren't up to it. In which case, what would be a good upgrade (one selling point of the Mags was light weight, wouldn't want any unit over 20KG, prepared to spend more money now though). c) Replace the lot. In which case, with what? Again light is good. Would require long term counseling for any solution over £750. Hartke pic here for reference http://s3.amazonaws.com/samsontech/related_docs/HA3500.jpg All ideas gratefully received.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
spinynorman replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Nice looking Gherson Les Paul copy. Somebody seems to be pushing the bidding up in £20 increments, though. There's suggestions these were made in Japan, but fetishguitars says they were one of the few companies that kept production in Italy. So more sh*te-eye than Japcrap.
