Having made the change from an Ashdown ABM recently I'd agree that an Orange Terror Bass is a good move. Cabs to taste, but if I was looking again I'd also be checking at Barefaced's Compact and Super 12
I avoided P-basses like the plague for many years. Now I'm a total convert. I can tell you it doesn't take CS prices to get a really good P-bass. I bought my 2nd at the weekend - an '83 Squier SQ series - for £100. Comparing back and forward with my 08 US Precision I have to say there's not much to separate them, other than the Squier has had a hard life and could do with the frets stoning.
Play as many as you can. Buy the one that suits you best.
One of the best threads I've ever seen on here! My ATK better run and hide. cos the sandpaper's coming out soon! Where did you source your veneer Andy?
In the past year I've bought 2 cracking used basses for under £200 - Ibanez ATK700 (albeit with finish cracking) for £150 which I'd put up against any modern Stingray, and a well used 1983 Squier SQ series Precision for very little (just on Saturday past), which is on a par or better than the 70's reissue Fender Japanese Precision I owned previously. Keep an eye on your local gumtree or music frums. There are bargains to be had!
New I'd second the Squier Jaguar suggestion. They look like excellent value, although I haven't tried one yet.
Couldn't disagree more having replaced both Warwick and Musicman sockets with switchcraft and both subsequently failing... Friday afternooners maybe... Also IMHO and YMMV... No reflection on Warwicks either...
Got to disagree! The design may be the same but the quality of construction sets the likes of the Switchcraft and the Neutrik way above the Warwick spec one. I've 'probably' owned more Warwicks than anyone else on BC... or anywhere else for that matter and as such I must have replaced dozens of sockets and I can honestly say that the quality components mentioned will last many times longer than the original spec sockets. In fact I once bought a couple of replacement Warwick sourced sockets and they failed within a year or two whereas Switchcraft replacements are still going strong after 15 years. Just my honest and unbiased take on these sockets!
It's not Warwick, it's the Switchcraft designed socket. I've had nothing but trouble with them - not just on Warwicks... My bongo's the same, as is my Ibanez ATK. When it's my turn to rule I'll outlaw the b*stard things!!!
Welcome! Trace elliot do still make amps (http://www.trace-elliot.co.uk/index.php#home), but they aren't the same company any more. They're now owned by Peavey. As for value you're probably in the £350-400 ballpark. Only downside is these amps are extremely heavy and the current trend is towards lightweight gear. Supposed to sound the mutts nutts though, so you shouldn't have any bother shifting it.
I think Owen has the answer to all your problems (under budget too!): http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=135623
If I hadn't just fallen in love with an Orange Terror Bass I'd be sorely tempted myself since I want to downsize a little!
put a low pass on the 3015lf to for best results. Obviously you shouldn't be mixing drivers though
To the uninitaited that isn't obvious... especially with 90% of bass amp manufacturers ads showing mixed driver cab setups. No wonder folk make mistakes.
It makes absolutely no sense that I've noticed the top strap button's in the wrong place... does this make me odd...
Interested in trades of any kind L?
Edit: I mean trades for something other than an SR500 - anything in the 'outgoing' list in my sig?
Try getting yourself a forearm clasp from a phsio. Great job and helped me a lot when I had my tennis elbow problems (and you get to look like yer man Greenwood from Radiohead to boot!). I'm afraid to say you'll be lucky if it clears up in a few weeks...
Then I played the 50's CV yesterday for the first time
Was that the one in Matchetts? Saw one in there the other day but didn't have time to play anything...
I'm GAS free at the minute after the arrival of my Terror Bass the other day. Actually planning a bit of gear consolidation - going to clear out some basses and rig stuff (see sig) to replace it with something smaller and more modular (by adding a second GS112). Don't class that as GAS myself...
OK so I'd like a PJ/PP/PM of some description, but if one doesn't come along I'll be fine without.
Peavey IPR1600 perhaps? Doesn't bridge (well it does, but in some oddball way) but will do 500+ watts per side @ 4 ohms. REALLY lightweight (3.2kg/7lbs). I've been considering one myself... If it was 1U I'd have one already!
First gig rig - Sunn Mustang P-bass, Vantage 30w Amp
Current gig rig - Fender USA P-bass/Lakland 55-01 NTMB, Korg PitchBlack Tuner, Ashdown ABM400RC (soon to be replaced with Orange Terror Bass), Tech Soundsystems 4x12
