I was born on Saturday 29th December 1956, so all the basses made in my "year of birth" had already been made by the time I was born. So I bought an April 1957 Precision as being the closest I could get. As a bonus, as near as I can make out this bass came from the same batch as Bill Black's ...
That's a thing of great beauty, wow!

I should have plenty of choice from '77 but what to aim for? P, J, Ray, Rick? Probably a P or a J...

Col very kindly bought my triple.fi 10 to help me clear my drawer out. Very easy transaction, hope they serve you well mate!

Drumchat?! (split from Jazz drum kit on the way)

I'd be in too, I reckon my drummer would also be up for a natter -
I have a Blackstar, Fendery cleans and Marshall drive - most versatile amps on the market, don't understand why no one else can manage clean & drive well. I think these are still handwired too?? Essentially a Cornford at half the price (when new), and then half again from andy lol. EDIT: Emphasis on that Plexi aspect! 80's Charvel Hair Metal in abundance when called upon. I can get to the EVH realm with rolling a little tone & treble off my single coils.
Thanks Schnozz!
I'm getting mixed messages on this thread - this is *excellent*, it means I can choose to take whichever advice suits...
I think the message to take would be that it depends on the person, I took to it with relative ease, others find it hard to pick up, you won't know until you try matey! Have a good old noodle on a drum-friend's kit first and see if you can knock out a straight 4, it will feel a bit weird at first when you have to do stuff with your feet at specific times but you'll know if it feels like something worth pursuing -
Sure, you can tap out a few simple things, but to get to any decent standard, I'd say the process is very long.
I learned from scratch in a weekend (including basic 2 stroke roll) and to a level where I could convey a varied set of songs and keep the rest of the band going with some energy... If you gotta do it it's surprising what you can achieve -

I find that the 'extras' (drums, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, keys, whatever) go in seasons but bass is my main thing, I could do any of the others in a band but bass is my thing! -

I'd say yes as I can and do each new instrument I add makes me think differently about the other ones I play and improve on them too -
I don't understand us music types. We blow tons of cash against stuff to make the noise, but when it comes to protection we seem to ignore it. The custom ones are great - I got because my hearing is already mong'd. At 23 thats pretty rubbish. Get ones which are comfy to wear and allow you to hear everything. My ACS ones were 140 odd and it's the best purchase I've made. Practice sounds better since I'm not being deafened. I wouldn't substitute decent ones just cause other ones are cheap. I've used ER15s, Alpine, foam blah blah and always felt they removed the wrong frequencies or were just not comfy (ER15s made my ear itch).
Which ACS ones you got matey? These the right folks? http://www.hearingprotection.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65&Itemid=127 I've got alpine ones and if there's a better solution I want to investigate it!

Recent threads about how you do your covers got me wondering aout how the basschat population is made up, what proportion of us get their musical kicks from mostly playing covers or mostly playing originals or mostly in your bedroom/lounge/whatever... I'm a mostly covers player, I do help out a few friends who gig occasionally with their singer/songriter output but it's not as often as I'd like! Neither is the covers band really but it's the most frequent thing I do...

I learn any critical bits note for note and any other bits are a bonus if I get them note for note too, as long as it swings like the original and any memorable bits are right I don't worry too much, over time I develop 'my way' of playing the song which generally still involves any 'don't mess with it' bits an the rest may be tweaked to suit the way we play it...

I use these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Alpine-Music-safe-pro-reusable-attenuating-earplugs-hearing-protection-ear-plugs-/330687547031?pt=UK_BOI_ProtectiveGear_RL&hash=item4cfe838697 THey really help cut down on the noise level but still let me listen to a balanced sound, I literally never leave the house without mine!
