I would have to tack against the prevailing wind here. If everybody who's going to be in the room knows 7 of the songs, why waste the auditionee's time asking them to learn new ones? It's a first audition, ffs, 7 songs is more than enough to see if he can play. And if they're getting into mind-games about assessing someone's commitment or 'we do the choosing', then they're being a bit previous, IMO. It's only a poxy covers band, fer chrissake. He's not applying for Head Of Surgery at Barts Suggesting they go with the 7 'common' songs seems quite reasonable to me. So I'd say new band = illogical, sniffy and controlling. Probably a bunch of nervous, amateur, wound-too-tight timewasters. Tell 'em to poke it or you'll be back here in a month telling us horror stories from the rehearsal room. .
Fink you are the exception to the rule maestro . Has anyone watched the Dream Theater vids of their audition for a new drummer? The auditionees learned a couple of DT tracks, they were also asked to put a bass part to already written stuff and then they were required to jam/improv with the rest of the band. Seems like it covers all bases for an audition AFAIAC.
Well that was dissapointing - after all the rave reviews I found their album on Spotify, lasted about 5 tracks then had to turn it off - yet another band I dont get There's your answer

6music have been championing them for a little while
Once the Beeb get hold of the hip and happening thang then it's the kiss of death. At the moment I'm veering towards T-bird 13's side of the fence - shouty woman and what's with the kitchen sponge under the bass strings . Pseuds corner or what? OTOH I did rather like Carolina Chocolate Drops.
Well, sort of, I'm not, but Maz Totterdell who I play for in her live band is being played on Fearne Cotton's show today. This is a good thing, except... I am listening to it, and I forgot how annoying Ms Cotton is, hurry up and play the song so I can go back to 6music.... Still cool though.
It's radio 1, music comes second to self promotion of the presenters on that station.

Ordered. I understood from interviews that Rush wanted to go in and remix S&A

So, an actual pair of real living musical geniuses?

So tell me again, Dream Theater employed Mike Mangini . That drummer is great and cute. How do I get this on my ipod? -
Age, parents, peer group, friends; not necessarily in that order ?

A bit late to this thread but I've got a BB1100S and it is a brilliant bass. Bought new from Yamaha in '87 for about £400 and added a Hipshot D-tuner. When times were a bit tough in the early '90s I sold it my mate for £150 (he's a guitarist but wanted a bass for home recording) but I still had visiting rights. I always wanted to replace it with another and for my 50th last year I got the very same bass back as a present. It still plays great and I love noodling around on it. Great basses.

Does this mean my subscription will be cancelled for me

Bands dominated by a single guitarist ?

King Crimson and Be Bop Deluxe would figure highly on my list of bands dominated by a single guitarist. -

I was thinking of EVH too but DLR was a pretty distinctive vocalist and front man. -
It does look so weird. Lee Pommeroy is another upside downer.

Which BC Member's Bands do you want to see, and have seen?

I've seen Nearly Dan a couple of times most recently last Friday. Fantastic gig. I'm not aware of having seen any other BCer's band (does Geddy Lee post here )? -
Best Beatles song to play in a pub band?
"Hard Days Night" for sure...bombproof chord sequence, harmony potential and even room for a little geetar solo. Smart.
If you're going to do this then make sure you get the opening chord correct http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvxPc5MPEuQ -
Was at all of the above! the ABWH show was fantastic: Heart of the Sunrise with funk fingers. Whoa. A experience exceeded only by the same TLev/FF combo on 21st Century Schizoid Man at the Shepherds Bush Empire in 1996.
Shepherds Bush gig was ace. Mate and I walked in to a restaurant near the venue and sat on the next table to Bruford. We woz gobsmacked

I'd vote for Come Together. Plenty of room to chunk it up or play it straight. Whichever way the bass riff is very distinctive, should go down well. -
Basses that you've never wanted to own.

Bit late to the thread but: pointy bases - +1 Single cut - +1 Anything with scrolls and whirls in the body shape - thinking Ritter, completely fugly Love my Rick and BB1100S. Would love Zon, Dingwall, Vigier Passion with metal fingerboard (as played by Dave Sturt) -

That's the beauty of music - different strokes for different folks. However +1 with Bluejay -
Just saw Rammstein at O2

Saw them a couple of years ago. Fantastic gig, very entertaining (lots of fire and explosions) and great music but the best rock band around? Nahhh!! -
heh, heh, I'm a left hooker but play right handed (conventional?). I can cope with cack-handed bass players (Macca etc..) but cack-handed and upside down just does my head in. Have a great event lefty but let go the negative waves man

Hey guys sorry for the thread revival but I saw Lee Pomeroy with Steve Hackett's band last night. A great gig and Mr. P. looked to be enjoying himself immensely especially on the old Genesis tracks. Great sound from the Rick too!

He "guested" with Michael Schenker at High Voltage last summer. Schenker's regular bass player disappeared backstage while Pete Way was "playing". You could still hear the bass riffs from the regular bassist off stage. Sad really.
To be honest, the first thing I do when confronted by a bass is inspect it. All the usual stuff; Sight a line down the neck- is it straight? What's the fretwork like? How well assembled is it? What does it feel like under the hand? Then I'll play every fret on every string acoustically- listening for rattles, buzzes and unwanted resonances Then I'll check the intonation and action and finally... Is it actually in tune? Then plug it in... Have you any self-written pieces? Even just basic riffs? If so, you'll be the best judge of how the bass in your hands is working in that context. As regards amps, I seek out medium/smallish combos and turn off any widgets, setting the EQ flat. That ought to minimise any unwanted contributions.
Absolutely - play it unplugged first and foremost. I consider myself average at best and do feel intimidated trying a bass out in a shop.
The awkward moment you realise Richard hasn't got a Squier in his sig.... Oh and Richard a friend of mine saw the play the other day and commented on the bass playing he said something along the lines of "Mate you would have loved it the bass was great" but as I explained to him I have an aversion to JC but that must be a great gig and it sounds as if you are doing a great job.
But he does have Calvin Klein underwear ...................................... Hang on that seems wrong " very nice for a play set in 1963" - so he should have gone and found an original '63 P bass?
