1. No more than two pints before a gig. Have been pilastered once and it didn't go well. Also back in the day I was usually driving the van so no chance of getting hammered.
2. Shock horror - top totty had a few before going on stage to mime http://music.uk.msn.com/features/kimberley-walsh-girls-aloud-once-went-on-stage-drunk Anybody had one or two too many sherberts before a gig? Personally not immediately before but I've had a few too many up to a coulpe of hours before. Needed a bit of a nap to bring me round
3.
A Five String fixes that!
. It certainly does
4.
This question was asked during an interview with the producer Tony Platt which I thought may be interesting: What piece of technology do you think has been the most detrimental in the evolution of the recording realm? 'It would be the digital guitar tuner. When I first started, there were no guitar tuners, guitarists would tune to the piano, as the piano was always in tune in the studio. And so the guitar players always had the capacity to hold a guitar in tune. If they heard a string going out, they’d pull it a little bit to bring it back in. So things weren’t absolutely perfectly in tune but there wasn’t this focus of attention on the tuning so much. People were focusing on getting the feel right and getting it to where it was exciting. Now what happens is one string goes out of tune, everything stops, guitarist plugs into his tuner, tunes his guitar and then starts off again, but it has broken the momentum of the session so much. And again what happens is we have this overabundance of guitar players who have this overriding reliance on this piece of technology. They’re not thinking of tuning in their head, they’re not hearing the tuning in there, they’re looking at it, on the scale on the tuner.' ...I hadn't considered the effect a digital tuner may have on the momentum of a recording session.
Well yes that's true but is this really what the OP was on about? There is something about being in tune but a gnats' cock just off either way seems to add something to the feel. It mught be heresy to say it but bass can get away with this somewhat. However the deliberate detune proclivities of some guitarists to drop D or even drop C can be a bit tricky to deal with.
5. Anybody got one they'd be willing to let me have or point to one on t'interweb? Tried the usual sources but no luck so far. TVM in advance
6. Interesting thread for me. I've currently got a 3 series coupe. With the prospect of gigging again in 2013 I need something to get my gear in. Couple of basses, amp, cab and assorted odds and ends. I've thought about 4 x 4 but the usual off-roader type vehicles are too high off the floor. I'll be looking for something with a low floor line like an estate car but nwhich one
7. Everything fits in the gig bag at the moment. When I was gigging regularly I had an army surplus ammo box. All cables, tools, wireless stuff, gaffer tape etc... in a sturdy steel box ready for throuwing around the back of a van.
8. Greg Lake - I believe in Father Christmas Chris de Burgh - Spaceman Came Travelling Best Christmas songs ever. Pogues and Kirsty Macoll? deleted
9.
Quo NEVER dissappoint live , they are the hardest working act out there , always on tour , but best of all playing good sounding theatres rather than the arenas . god love em , Quo are Rock and Roll ( a few naff bits excepted )
Anyone who was at the outdoor Liverpool gig this year would think "you've got to love gigging to play in this". Torrential rain, howling gale and the stage facing into the wind. I was surprised they stayed on for 15 minutes let alone 75
10. Probably an opportunity for the remaining members of Nirvana to write a song with and play live with one of their heroes.
11. AS a couple of others have said no one person inspired me to pick it up (unless you count my mate who was a guitarist and playing bass seemed the best way to play songs together). Once I'd settled on bass then my musical listening preferences (admittedly predominated by Yes, Rush, Genesis and all things rock but stretching out to other musical genres) have tended to keep me inspired enough to persevere.
12.
I'm told that WH Smith stock a fair few jazz mags, you could start your research there?
Bit of a typo there shirley?
13.
I Do Not Like The Quo. no no no no And get yer air cut.
Thanks for contributing and adding balance to this Quo humpfest . Now, where were we? Oh yes - I love Quo I do
14. Rain and Softer Ride. Two of the best. Will be going to a frantic four gig next year.
15.
I hate rehearsals, am I alone in this? is it really just me?
They are a complete PITA re: moving kit in and out but you aint gonna get good without practice so suck it up and get on with it.
16. They know but they don't believe it. Kids today eh, think they know and do everything
17. ".............anyway it's definitely worth playing before parting with money" I'd advocate this for any puchase. Fortunately, Dave, I'm far enough from Bass Direct to make a casual trip to try a bass out prohibitive. It's saved me a fortune . Hopefully see you at Nelsonica 13?
18.
I haven't seen Thin Lizzy play live since the Thunder & Lightning Tour. I'm tempted to go see them this coming week, when they play in Birmingham. Does anyone know if they play any new material from the forthcoming new album? Oh yes, Marco is a wicked bass player
No, it's a strictly geatest hits event and a great event it is too. Go live and you'll hear MM. Apparently they have a new album ready to release but will be putting it out under another name. TBH I think that Scott Gorham and Brian Downey have realised that that they have become the world's biggest tribute act and TL will continue to play live but not release new material. The Liverpool Academy was sold out and of all the gigs I've been to at that venue I've never seen it so full - absolutely rammed.
19. Went to see Thin Lizzy in Liverpool last night. Great night was had by all. Marco Mendoza does make me laugh though; classic rock posturing but his "dancing" put me in mind of Gollum dancing on hot sand. And what's with the clit tickler on his bottom lip? Nice Yamaha BB though
20.
Hi Dave! ...let's not forget his nifty Basswork with the legend that is Bill Nelson.... http://bigplansforev...tures-from.html
+1 for this. The last few Nelsonicas have been great for watching Dave at work both with the Gentlemen Rocketeers and Orchestra Futura. Unfortunately I couldn't get to the Gong gig in Liverpool. Vigier Passion fretless Delta Metal for sale in Bass Direct if you've a spare £1500 http://www.bassdirec...sion_fless.html Oh and a really great guy to talk to
21. How about a bit of Be Bop Deluxe - Axe Victim, 3rd Floor Heaven?
22. We (OH, 19yo daughter and 17yo son) had a great laugh after tea this evening. Mum and I were picking our best and worse songs from NOW That's what I call christmas. 17yo was disappointed there was no folk/viking metal christmas songs. The closest was (according to him) In Dulce Jubilo. OH was adamant that The Cranberries sang a christmas song about cranberries (until we demonstrated that the reference to cranberries was one phrase in Christmas Rapping by The Waitresses). Time was - write a Christmas hit or have a Christmas No.1 and you'd be made for life - Slade, Mud, Pogues (god I hate that song), Jonah Lewie - best Christmas song ever )
