1.
An oxymoron, surely?
.
2. It's a bit of a walk from South Kensington tube but it is the nearest. Covent Garden is very nice if a bit touristy in the courtyard area on the lower ground floor you often get artists singing some of the classic popular operatic pieces. The natural reverb of the area adds to the vocal experience. Sit and have a coffee or something stronger and relax for a while.
3. Museums definitely. I never tire of visiting the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum. For slightly off the wall tourist things we took our kids up the Monument - at over 300 steps it's a stiff climb but great views of the city. Tower of London and Greenwich Observatory were also great attractions
4. Dunno about music shops but definitely take a trip on the Eye. If the weather's good the views are spectacular. A riverboat ride from Westminster to Greenwich is also a nice way to spend an hour or so.
5. Not my first bass, which was a Kay P-bass copy but I regretted selling my BB1100S to my best mate when times were tough. However, I got it back for my 50th birthday last year.
6. Yep time flies. Saw his last Liverpool gig just a few short months before he died. Great guitarist.
7. As leftyhook says try a few in the middle of the spot. No need to make wholesale changes but just introduce changes gradually. You never know it may only take 2 or 3 songs to make the whole set feel alive again.
8. Hagar is quoted as saying that Aronoff is better to play with live than Chad Smith simply because Chad is likely to go off his trolley during the gig.
9. I haven't got an answer but I do know that The Duke of Cumberland in North Ferriby was where Be Bop Deluxe played their early gigs
10.
Yes, thats a good point. Someone said at a gig recently that the band was very "efficient" It made me think that the songs were predictable.
Maybe it's the songs and not the band or the way you play them? What kinds of covers band is it? For example take the Classic Rock covers band; everyone plays the standards (e.g. all right now, black night etc...) and so no matter how well they are played there is nothing surprising. So out of all the thousands of classic rocks songs pick some of the less well known "standards". I think this approach can apply to any genre of covers sets. The only thing I can say therefore is to review your set list and inject something less predictable.
11. Well it looks like we'll be hearing some "new" stuff later this year http://www.planetrock.com/news/rock-news/massive-haul-of-unreleased-thin-lizzy-found-3135/
12.
You enjoy it whatever he played mate He did Kiss Like Judas and Still Too You To Remember on Monday, they were superb! As were all of the songs. What was your band and where did you play with them?
The ban was/is The Quest. We did about 6 or 7 dates on the first part of the tour. Exact venues are a bit hazy but I distinctly remember Rooftops in Glasgow coz it was a bugger of a get in (lift to 3rd floor and then walk up one further story). Also gigged with them in Northampton, Redcar and a few other places (if I could find my scrapbook I'd be able to be more exact). Sadly our drummer decided to get all ill with glandular fever and we had to pull out on the eve of our hometown gig in Liverpool
13.
Was at a Dunnery house concert last night. He's a funny bugger, but him and Dorie work magic together. Take That are seriously good. I saw some of the concert on the TV the other day. Very impressive and some really good songwriting, and a great show.
Frank is an odd one, I've always fancied one of his house gigs though. Problem is I'd keep wanting to hear Old Man and the Angel or Once Around the World. Small claim to fame, my band supported It Bites on part of their Once Around the World UK tour; happy days Sorry a bit OT there
14. Back in Early 1988 I bought a BB1100S. About 10 years later the band had split up and I was financially strapped so I sold the BB1100S to my mate. Bad news, no bass, good news I still had visiting rights whenever I went to his place (he's a guitarist). Fast forward to 2011 and in March I turned the ripe old age of 50. I got my BB1100S back as a birthday present . It remains one of the sweetest guitars I've ever played.
15. I watched It Bites featuring Lee Pomeroy the other week in Manchester. Always been a fan of the band but was mightly impressed with Lee and his unusual setup.
16. Mr. Pomeroy on bass? Got to admit I didn't watch it.
17. I think at this early stage he's not a total convert to the low side plus the plan was to use it for rehearsals as well as gigs so it needs to be portable as well as flexible. Thanks for the suggestions to date, I'll pass 'em on
18. pm sent but as an alternative try to get it (Guy Pratt's book) from your local lending library.
19. Simple anagram but good to note the recognition. The Everyman is one of the easier cryptic crosswords. Being a Grauniad man then anything by Auracaria tends to fox me
20. Agreed. I don't know his budget but I'd reckon on around £200. Will have a more detailed scan in the for sale section.
21. My mate's son has started playing bass and done a few gigs. He's been using a guitar combo and so dad has decided he needs a proper bass combo. So what does he get? I have a GK backline combo for practising at home and I thought something similar would be suitable for rehearsals and the small bars that they are currently playing. I'd appreciate some recommendations from the knowledgeable people on here.
22. There have been loads but in no particular order: Supporting It Bites on their Once Around The World Tour Playing in the Band Explosion Festival at The Budokan, 1987 Winning the Battle of The Bands competition that enabled us to go To Japan and meeting Bruce Dickinson Getting back with the guys after 15 years and immediately falling in to the groove with the drummer Playing a rock covers set and my daughter was singing
23. And the drummer is doing rather well in Strictly Come Dancing. So a successful year for McFly
24. If I could afford it and not miss the money then I'd probably buy an Alembic or Vigier tomorrow. They won't make me a better bass player but they'd be nice in the collection. Spending £2K and upwards won't make anyone a better bass player - its in the fingers, brain oh and practice, practice, practice.
25. I beg to differ but there you go
