1. I recall Mick Fleetwood saying he thought one of the reasons he worked well with McVie was because one of them played slightly ahead and the other slightly behind and it complemented each other.
2. Having heard the track just now on youtube I have some sympathy with the OP. I used to get stuck with a lot of this kind of stuff in one band I was in, the band leader had a bit of an obsession with Jeff Healy. Tidy player and all that but lots of those modern blues guys seem to plow a fairly narrow furrow musically but I guess that goes with the territory. Needless to say it was shortest tenure I've ever been in a gigging band.
3. Assuming the band haven't just picked it at randome, could they put you in touch with the previous bass player so you could see how he played it or is it a brand new band from scratch?
4. Been away so only just caught up with this, very sorry to hear of his passing, particularly enjoy his work on the Clear Air Turbulence and Scarabus albums with Gillan Band, would loved to have seen that lineup like Urban did. RIP Gus...
5. I recently upgraded my version of iTunes but no automatic upload of the album. However I'd already downloaded from the iTunes store for nothing so I assume the system already knew i had it and didn't bother downloading it again. Only listened to it once on the plane going to Cyprus and have a load of other stuff to listen to before i give it another whirl so can't comment on whether I like it or not. I imagine I will end up including one or two tracks (probably whichever singles are released) on the playlist for my iPod associated with the band. I'm still sticking with my 'thick phone' for the moment so no possibility of an automatic download - it doesn't even have a camera on it ffs!
6.
was with him all the way to "change your strings more than once every three years".
Obviously never worked with Jamerson then. Although with that hairstyle I think we could have guessed that.
7. As long as you play it professionally and don't dick them around (ie give decent notice to quit if something more interesting comes along) then from a band newbie point of view there's plenty to be learned here, even if it is ultimately to recognise what you don't want from the next band! It's always interesting to see how others apply themselves to gigging/practice/preparation. One thing is probably true though, if you are new to it then don't expect others with a lot of experience to take any notice of what you have to say for a while, whether you have a valid point or not.
8. Sorry I couldn't make this Chris, especially as I know Paul (gtr) who I saw on Thurs, he would have been playing with Mick Rutherford (hell how old is he now!?) on the day. Doing a bit of pre holiday shopping then had a gig myself in evening. Glad you had a decent gig in the end.
9. Aluminium Camera/toolcase job from Maplins, pick them up when they are on their half price offer. Very solid, if you rotinely overfill them and strain the catches they will fail eventually but used sensible they last years.
10. Unfortunately NM had left by the time I first saw them in 1981, along with Bernie Marsden. Makes you realise what a relative.y short period they were in the 'classic' lineup. However Colin Hodgkinson was no mug on bass so it was still a strong lineup, Cozy Powell on drums! Oddly enough I saw Murray & Powell years later as part of Peter Green's backing band when he started touring again after being very quiet for years. Now I think of it I also saw NM play with the Japanese rock band Vow Wow and I think he was in the 'almost tribute' band 'Company of Snakes' when I saw them (along with Marsden). Speaking of Marsden, if you haven't heard his latest album 'Shine' it's worth a listen, there's a rerecorded vs of Trouble on it feat. Coverdale.
11. Unfortuantely I'm out of the country when they play nearest gig to me, would have liked to go along even though I'm not much of a blues officianado.
12. Saw him playing with Winery Dogs in Wolverhampton. Enjoyable gig, never seen a player sweat as much as Sheehan did that night!

NUTZ

I was 50 this year so my mate would have worked with 'Sak' around 1980, think it was an engineering firm but could be wrong. I think they worked reasonably closely so next time you see him the guy was called Andrew Smart ('Smarty' as we called him) but long since lost touch with him, last I heard he was living in Scotland. Another odd coincidence is that about 10 years ago I went with a mate to see Letz Zep and got matey for a while with their singer Billy Kulke. Billy was the bass player in Jagged Edge when Rob Armitage was in that band after he left BT!

peteb - I just looked at the 'Balls To The Wall' page and noticed Neil Saxton is in it. An old schoolmate of mine left at 16 (I stayed on for A levels) and one of his earliest jobs was working in the same place as Neil in Cleckheaton where we grew up, probably around the time he was getting Baby Tuckoo together. I did eventually see BT but not until mid 80's after I'd moved to Nottingham. Small world.
15. Infrequently and inefficiently. Mostly songs are learned independently as individuals once we've decided on a key/version to work with (covers band) then we give it a go at the next gig. Ive done 4 rehearsals in 16 months (gigging on average 3 times per month) of which 2 were to bring ex members up to speed who came back to cover regulars who were away and one other was to try out a potential new dep but he wasn't up to the job so it was good we gave him a try out in advance rather than just chuck him into a gig. We finally got a proper rehearsal of 'regulars' together to try a few new songs a few weeks back. Drummer went to wrong rehearsal room so was late and the singer hadn't sorted any of the lyrics, spent half the night trying to get a signal on his phone to access them via the web on the fly. And he wonders why I maintain I'm still open to offers from other bands if something better comes along
16. Do they still own Fopp? Can get some good deals in there.

My brother had a copy of their live album 'Nutz live Cutz' which wasn't bad for that genre. I think the nucleus of the band reinvented themselves as 'Rage' in the 80's. I saw the singer doing backing vocals when Ian Gillan was promoting his 'Naked Thunder' album at Central TV studios in Nottm around 1990, there's a DVD of it knocking around. I might be wrong but I think the bass player from Nutz might have been in one of the later Groundhogs lineups.
18. If you want to keep the string thru option then have a look around for a badass III, these allow both conventional and string-thru arrangement whilst also providing the heavier bridge. I have one on mine though I'm not sure if they may be discontinued now?
19.
I've always been a Jazz fan, and I've replaced the neck pickup volume control with a pull switch pot in the electronics on the so that when you pull it out it puts the two pickups on together in series giving you a big P bass sound. Two in one, as it were - excellent. http://www.guitar-mo...ng/j_series.gif
I have an S1 jazz, does the same thing. Neat little spring loaded button in the middle of the neck PU vol pot.
20. +1 for the Ed Friedland book in the Hal Leonard series, had it a while and bought for exactly same reason as OP.
21.
Yes I did think about including 'shoegaze' along with 'stoner...' etc, but I think I'd made my point by then! In 2002 Mrs Axe and I went to see Suede (again). Second on the bill were Razorlight, in whom the star quality was clearly evident. Bottom of the bill were a band whose name I don't recall (surprise!) - they never engaged with the audience, and sank without trace. And that is the problem with shoegazing...
Worst band I've seen in recent memory for lack of engagement live was Athlete. Coincidentally they were supporting Alanis Morissette.
22. Pisser. Rather underrated, knew his way round the fretboard and a tone/style that suited the band at that time perfectly. Occasionally ame across on the DVD documentaries as still being slightly miffed at being dispensed with but that was very much how IA operated, many more would follow. Otherwise seemed a decent bloke. Didn't he go to Australia and do something completely different from music?
23. Cheers, might have a look if I get there early enough. Won't be time after the game. I won't bother taking my P deluxe down though, somehow don't think they'd give me what I want for it!
24. It's not really the 'big hits' aspect though, she's doing running up that hill, hounds of love, cloudbusting which were decent hits. Plenty of interesting non hit material from the first 4 albums but none of these albums are represented at all. No one has the same voice in their mid 50's that they had in their early 20's and she did at least cover some of this way back in '79 live so it's understandable I suppose. Her gig, her choice at the end of the day. Personally I'm quietly relieved I didn't push it for a ticket.
25. One born every minute I guess. Well, one Kiss fan with a ten grand hole in their pocket that is. If they'll pay it then he'll charge it.
