Yes The Sweet were always something of a schizo band with a much heavier side below the (often written for them by Chinn & Chapman) pop singles. They could be almost Deep Purple-esque at their rockiest. If you see a cheap copy pick up the 'Hard Centres' compilation for some less commercial stuff.
2. Always thought 'Gaye Bykers On Acid' smacked of trying a bit too hard.
3. Some nice basslines on that first Rainbow album, still not sure if he's on the final released version of Heaven & Hell though. RIP
4.
Free falling Tom Petty and the heart breakers.... please end now ... before i die of boredom .. I suggested swapping it to good enough because at least that interesting Looks of horror from the rest of the group.
Petty's another of those artists that despite having a healthy back catalog of really giggable songs you tend to hear just one or two done by nearly every band that approaches his stuff. I'd quite like to have a go at American Girl some time but I doubt the others would be up for it.
5. Used to gig just a US Jazz, last couple of years it's been a US P. I thought about getting the Ric out of early retirement for the new project but the singer can't stand the sound of them apparently so I guess I'll be sticking with the P. If we play a pub with enough floor space I might bring the jazz out as backup, not taken a 2nd bass to a gig for years.
6. TBH I thought the OP clip sounded like a P from the off and it didn't surprise me to see there were P type pickups on the bass, albeit 2 sets! I sometime wonder if we get fooled by style of play as much as anything - Jon Camp played in a very similar way to Squire, Squire played a Ric a lot and your brain starts filling in the blanks.
7. Yes he sat down when I saw him too, may have been late 90's or very early 2000's. Outdoor gig at De Montfort Hall in Leicester in case anyone else here went?
8. My playing isn't really 'professional' enough for me to get away with anything resembling pretentiousness so I think I'm OK.
9. And let's not forget a lot of those old blues guys have an affinity with the UK because there was a time when their music was all but shunned on their home turf and they struggled to get gigs. Bands like the Stones and others of their ilk gave exposure to the old US blues men here and gave their careers a new lease of life.
10. There was a good BBC doc on him a few years back, grew up dirt poor like so many blues men of his generation. Given shed loads of money back to the needy in the area where he came from (I think there is some sort of formal foundation started by him but he doesn't make a song and dance of it). Came across as very likable indeed. The recent program doesn't seem to be available on BBC site but there's this from the archive, 1972: http://www.bbc.co.uk...ing-out-bb-king
11.
as can Glenn Hughes (k*ob that he is) and Mr Coverdale
Hughes perhaps but Coverdale? Much as I like classic Whitesnake I think DC's voice is all but shot these days for live work. You can paper over the cracks to some extent in the studio but I noticed a few years back when WS did the support slot on a Def Leppard tour how much his voice had deteriorated, the backing band are singing as much of the material as Dave these days. A shame but we're all human. Saw UFO the other night and time has finally caught up with Phil Mogg too (though he did have a cold to be fair).
12. I virtually fast forwarded through the whole of last week's show and tomorrow night's line up doesn't particularly inspire me either. I had a similarly poor run from the last series too but there were a few highlights.
13. Went down well with the punters and didn't annoy the LL? You've sold out mate.
14. Darn, saw this too late. Hopefully catch your next local gig if I can.
15. Plant actually sang a lot better than I was expecting him to at last year's gig in Wolverhampton.
16. Plant absolutely bang on with why he didn't want to do Zep all over again IMO, went up a notch or three in my estmation. Evidently not shared by some others on here but that's life.
17. In the previous band I found I was enjoying playing Suspicious Minds more than I expected to do. I can't 'do a Scheff' but I threw in a few little random fills at the end to spice things up.
18. The one I'm enjoying getting to grips with for the new project is Echo Beach, probably because I've also had to create a patch for the midi pedals and find a way of playing those at the same time as a (slightly simplified) bassline. It's coming together but the singer's not sure about it which means it'll probably get dropped just as I've mastered it!
19. As with most things it's a matter of moderation. I usually get a pint in after setting up and that lasts until the end of the first set. I tend to go for weaker strength beers when I'm playing anyway (under 4% usually) and maybe a half in the second set, so over the time I'm at the pub 1 to 2 pints by the time I'm cleared away isn't going to affect my playing nor trouble the breathaliser.
20. It's an odd mix in the UK, it is customary to add 10-15% on to the bill if you have a meal in a restaurant (assuming service is not included on the bill) but you wouldn't normally tip for buying a pint. Then again there is usually no table service in most pubs, you go to the bar and order and pick up your own drinks. It was fascinating going to House of Blues in New Orleans and seeing the waitresses squeezing between punters with big trays full of drinks even while the bands were on.
21. I died a bit inside when I saw Dakota on the set list of the band I've recently joined, this must be the 3rd or 4th act in a row I've had to do it with. I'll be voting for it to get quietly dropped once we've done a few gigs and can start expanding the set list.
22. I don't think bands look down on tips it's just unusual (though certainly not unheard of) here to get any extra over the pre agreed fee, we are still not a tipping culture in the UK. Probably more likely to get a bit extra at a private party or wedding than a standard bar/pub gig but it does happen occasionally. Glad you had a good gig, though even with tips your band has had to play for 4 hours for the equivalent of about £100 per player. Some guys here might be prepared to play that long but a lot wouldn't.
23. Unfortunately never saw them at their peak and there are no tour dates close enough to me to get to see this year either. Ah well...
24. Smiths, Blur to name two. Though come to think of it I wasn't that bothered about the music either but the vocals just put the final nail in the coffin.
25. Yes, I've only been once and it was a sell-out gig by Winery Dogs. One of the sweatiest venues I've been to, at least on that particular night.
