Here's one you won't find on a best of compilation but I've always liked it (warning, ric content!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L44iHlbemwo

Not just this track, there are quite a few WA tracks I'd like to have accurate bass transcriptions of but there just don't seem to be publications available. I read somewhere that Martin Turner was considering doing a book of WA material at one time but it never happened.

Been listening to a lot of genesis at the moment
Undertow from and then there were three is also a powerful old tune
I saw the Italian band 'The Watch' a year or two back. They exist as an originals band (admittedly always sounding like early genesis) and also do genesis tribute shows. The last time I saw them they did mostly Gabriel era stuff but occasionally did Collins era material but sung as if Gabriel never left, one of which was Undertow. Put an additional interesting slant on it. -
I saw Steve Hackett and band at the Hammersmith Odeon earlier this year. Tribute band ReGenesis weren't taking part though
Sorry got my wires crossed, Hackett called his tour revisited rather than regenesis. My mistake -

Never quite got into Genesis in the same way I got into Yes but they have grown on me a bit more in recent years. I might go to see one of the Hackett 'Regenesis' shows in October, I've seen some very positive reviews. I quite like 'And then there were three' as I came to it without listening to earlier albums and just accepted it for what it was. Never really got 'Supper's Ready', still think it's overrated as a song sequence. Prefer Gabriel's solo stuff over any of the latter day Genesis output and even over some of the stuff he did in classic era days with them too. -
Wilko Johnson at Wickham Festival (Yesterday)

I stumbled upon WJ playing with NW-R and some drummer I can't recall in a little club on a wet Wednesday night in Nottingham in the mid-80's. Not that many people there iirc. As I was at a 'barely beginning to teach myself bass from library books' point I was blown away by Norman nedless to say. Wilko was a bit manic and slightly scary as you'd expect. Don't recall any of the set list at all, didn't know much Feelgood beyond Milk and Alcohol in those days and he didn't play on it anyway. -
Did it affect the flavour of the cola though?

Not managed to fill my Nissan Note yet and still no major service replacemets required after four years. I'm not a high mileage driver these days though, especially after switching to cycling to work.

Your first Recording equipment and the journey.

I had a Zoom MRS that you could write the finished tracks straight to an onboard CD writer for a while but never fully mastered it, sold on eBay and they don't make them any more. Took a while to get the hang of but it seemed to do a job. A lot of buttons on it though from what I recall... -
Easy cover songs for singing bass player in 3 piece...
KevB replied to Sean's topic in General Discussion
I've done lead on a few through the years, in addition to already mentioned if your wedding guests like some Stereophonics then both Dakota and Have A Nice Day are simple for bass/vox combined. Kinks All Day and All of the Night easy too (though I think I sing it a bit more like the Stranglers cover!) and if you want to get more laid back I found that Cat Stevens' Wild World isn't too difficult either, even managed to slip in the guitar fill as the guy i was jamming it with wasn't sure of that bit. Dr Dave from this site fronts a rock/blues trio but i think he's on holiday at the moment, his band will have ahuge list as they have been going a long time. -
I don't go anywhere near my ric in this type of weather, it has the stickiest finish on the back of the neck of any of the basses I own. No problem with any of the Fenders, think they are all satin finishes.

Sat night's gig was one of those typical hit and miss wedding affairs. We aren't really a wedding band but sometimes we are specifically approached to do one and if we can do it we try to please. I think the link from us to the wedding was a bit vague for Sat's gig so I don't think they really knew what they were getting, hence a pretty quiet dance floor for large portions of the set. Lack of decent air con didn't really help either, I wouldn't have danced in that temp either and the DJ booked was also struggling to get people going with even the usual guaranteed floor fillers. It wasn't that well paid so we didn't feel obliged to do a great deal. Bit of a downer at the end in that my mobile went missing and the venue hasn't had it handed in, probably have to get another one. Was only a cheapo pay as you go so didn't owe me anything, just inconvenience of getting a new number etc unless the company can arrange for me to keep the existing one somehow.

Is there anything you can't play after a certain age?
KevB replied to seashell's topic in General Discussion
That one's out of the question for me anyway, cos I could never manage the bass solo!
Can't really do the bass solo either but it's still in the set of practically every gig we do I don't think the singer really has much of an idea of what the basslines actually do or what it takes to pull them off (fnar fnar). Typically I turn up cold for a gig having not had much time to put practice in during the week and he'll call out Going Underground and My Generation as the first two songs. -
One of those basslines I'd like to crack for a bit if fun one day but I'll never work it out by ear. Saw a reasonable tab of it once but that pre-chorus bit looks a handful and watching Camp do it on the TOTP clips doesn't make it look any easier!

Sounds like a plan, I was in Cyprus when I turned 40 (in fact IIRC I was actually in Nicosia on the day itself) so maybe I should take a trip somewhere for the next big 'un... a few of my mates are all 50 at various points during next year so some of us might have a joint trip away somewhere anyway.

Only a matter of months away before it'll be my turn - did it hurt much?
+1 for Greenslade (although they did allow a 6 stringer in on Spyglass Guest and Time & Tide ) Can i also suggest The Bad Plus
Yeah I know they slipped in a bit of guitar later on but felt obliged as Tony Reeves is or has been a BC member

Anne's still got some pipes on her but I wish she'd have taken her coat off, looked like she had a bus to catch or something On another note, is it just me or is Plant starting to look a bit like the bloke who was Hitler in 'Downfall' ? -
Some of their more recent albums have been a real return to form IMHO and I'm not a particularly blinkered Quo fan. There are some tracks on Heavy Traffic, Quid Pro Quo and even the current movie soundtrack album that wouldn't be out of place on classic 70's Quo albums, they have gone back to some richer, darker material in places after a lot of years of frothy so so stuff in the80's and 90's. As for live they are still a slick hard working outfit and I still think that Rossi is a better guitarist than a lot would think, he just doesn't make a big thing of it.

Not particularly a fan but I liked the mix on the bass, makes it sit upfront enough to notice it yet it doesn't overpower the vocal.
-
I hope they cut you in on the money if you were supporting so many different guests. Seems like the house band bassist got an easy night out of it!

For the outdoor gig last Sat I wore a pair of very thin black cotton trousers I usually reserve for foreign hols only and went commando. I found it quite a liberating experience. I think the fan at the back of the stage blowing cool air across to the drummer and me helped too though...
