1.
That might be the tone you want, but is it the tone you need for the band to sound good when you're all playing together. IME they are two different things.
This is a very good point and commonly overlooked. Get the band together for a long jam session and make it clear you are going to be doing a lot of tone adjustments so you might not be playing all way through most songs. Make sure you have a long lead or go wireless so you can get far enough away to take the whole band sound in context of the adjustments you are making. My guess is you will probably be surprised at how severe an adjustment you make before it becomes really obvious in the 'final mix' compared with relatively subtle adjustment in the confines of your private practice space when you only have the bass itself to listen to.
2. Yes, saw DP on their last tour with Jon and it did get a bit emotional. I also went to the Albert Hall when they revisited the Concerto for Group and Orchestra, can't believe it was 14 years ago!
3. Most band members are too spineless to sack people face to face, usually seems to be text or email these days so a proper meeting may just be to see how you are getting on with the set.
4. BBC iPlayer; http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03794g3/Jon_Lord_Its_All_Music/
5.
The Ric Resource Forum isn't the official Ric site (despite what many think), so that's probably a bit pointless. Overpainting isn't an issue; Fender used to do it all the time. However the peeling off is, although if they were sold as such then there is indeed not much in the way of story really.
Thanks but I am aware that RR isn't an official manufaturers site, just it seems on of the quickest way to bring something to J Hall's attention is that site. Also knew of the Fender overpainting, partic duff sunbursts, for some time. It's just that the overpaint tends to actually stay on with those.
6. I think it looks like a screw onto the top of a mic stand type fitting, might make my side of the stage a bit more cluttered but will give it a go.
7. After a poor gig on Friday normal service was duly resumed last night. Outdoors under a tarpaulin and scoffolding erected stage to a crowd of people celebrating an amateur football clubs half century. We needed to move out a bit of unnecessary DJ gear from the back of the stage so we could fit in. Was a bit snug but no worse than some of the pokey areas we have played in. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the organiser got up to do a song with us. He seemed well happy after the gig and would have us back for future events. We were also on fairly early so even though we played two full sets I was all packed up and home by midnight, job done. I don't usually blow my own trumpet but I thought last night me and the drummer really started to gel and generally held the thing together pretty tightly.
8.
majelectronic.co.uk perhaps?
How weird, tried a few google searches and that never came up! Nice to see they are still going in some form, he sounds a bit of a 'character'. I get the impression that the monitors I have are well built and have had no issues with them and at £100 for the powered + slave matched pair were probably a good deal Cheers
9. Cheers Ray, nice to meet you. I didn't get to look at BRX's thread where you said you were coming down until today. Nice of you to hang around, we weren't firing on all cylinders but the hot sweaty conditions didn't help, I dread to think what it would have been like with a big crowd in - or maybe they would have just actually turned the air con ON! Will try to post future gigs a bit more regularly. Def should be on at H2O bar in Hucknall on Aug 6th. We are fairly busy but in July/Aug it seems a lot of them are private party types so not general public access gigs.
10. Having got some useful recommendations about a small vocal monitor it got me thinking about the wedges I already have. I bought them s/h as a pair, one powered and the other a slave to run off it so they could be used as a small scale PA in an emergency. They run at 75W on one 8ohm or paired at about 150W 4ohm. They work fine but I've never seen another one nor anything else by the same manufacturer. I'm sure I read somewhere that MAJ were based in w midlands and the M and J stood for the initials of the bloke who started it and his wife. Anyone know anything else about them? 11. It really needs to be, it's a 50th anniversary celebration for an amateur football club so a bit more high profile than usual pub gig. Outdoors which will be nice (I'm insisting on taking my monitors though so I can hear my bv's). If there's a decent crowd we'll work better as a band and respond and I'll be more switched on, I don't think any of us were 100% last night so it wasn't just me.
12. Well I've gone for it, got one from Thomann for £133 delivered. The only problem will be the archaic and rudimentary PA it will have to work with, just a 4 channel mixer amp which has 'slave outs' for monitoring so I don't think I'll get a dedicated out just for my vocal. I'm hoping I can put my mic directly into this monitor and then send that signal out from the back of it into the PA so I can just have my vox through it. If I end up using midi pedals as well I'll just have to do the same for that and mix the two on the monitor, looks like it has 3 potential inputsso doable. It would be nice to have other vox through my monitor too but without a proper mixing desk on the PA with more sophisticated mon outs I can't see a way round it. My biggest gripe at the mo is I can barely hear what I'm singing at all as I'm behind the PA and the Behringer should do the job to address this. I'm hoping the equally archaic PA speakers pack in and we persuade the band leader to buy some powered speakers and then I can dust off my 16 channel mixer and loan it to him to have a far more versatile PA set up but I can tell he's one of those people that will do anything to avoid any sort of change in his set up which is the most simple thing imaginable but really inflexible.
13. That sounds like a really rewarding gig, really pleased for ya Debs. Had a shocker last night, just one of those things. I've got to know when I'm in the zone or not before I even turn up for a gig and last night was one of those. It was like playing in a haze all night feeling oddly detached from what I was supposed to be doing.Working all week and being up since 6am made me realise why I just don't do many Friday gigs any more. What made it worse was that despite a really low audience one of them was a fellow Bc'er and ex member of the band! Made more mistakes in first set alone than in previous half dozen full gigs. Back out again tonight so it'll be soon forgotten though.
14. Cheers, probably should have done a search before starting the thread. Looks like it'll be around the £150 mark so may pick one up if they really are up to the job. I don't hold with all Behringer gear self destructing within 6 months of purchase
15. Our singer stands out front so he can interact with the women...err, audience. This means he gets to hear what he sings plus the mix from the backline pretty well. All good for him, the rest of us backing singers mostly can't hear what we are doing at all. I have a nice powered monitor (1X12 wedge by MAJ) but he won't entertain it coming anywhere near him and we play such pokey stage areas that there just isn't room for it and his ego despite it being a reasonably compact enclosure for a 1X12 wedge. So I'm asking for recommendations for a monitor that will primarily be for vox but might also be used for midi keyboard pedals too in future. Would a 1X8 give enough frequency range? The main thing is to keep the overall external dimensions down and a reasonably punchy clear output (my current monitor is 75W at 8ohm and is plenty loud enough). Also preferably one that is avaialble as a non powered slave version too in case I need to run another one to the drummer.
16. If I'd bought it I'd be posting the pics to the Ric Resources site straight off asking how that sort of deterioration in a couple of years could happen and what Ric were going to do about it. Didn't realise the wood was that dark underneath, I thought they'd all look 'mapleglo' without the top coat.
17. Still not found anything that suits me better than a Jim Dunlop nylon 1mm. They only ever seem to come in black though which makes them a magnet for getting lost on dark stages.
18.
Didnt Django Rheinhardt not play with just two fingers after an accident?
He did two fingered solos but still used the injured 3rd and 4th fingers for making some chord shapes.
19.
We did She Sells Sanctuary for the first time.
Which presumably is now referred to as 'Seashell's Sanctuary'
20. Probably mentioned before 'shell, if your band wants a change of scenery you are all welcome to pitch up at the Greyhound in Beeston on a Sunday afternoon and do a slot. It gets pretty quiet over the summer months so would be no problem getting on stage. Can you remind me where your jam nights are? Dudley maybe? I keep meaning to drive down one month when work's not so frantic.
21. I get the impression that a lot of relic'd instruments end up in the hands of people who know full well they aren't going to either live long enough or gig the instrument long enough to naturally produce the amount of wear that is being artificially produced if they bought one unblemished from the start.
22.
He's very quiet about his band isn't he. There are a few people on here whose bands I'm intrigued by but who are very quiet about them.
I got the impression it was some sort of top end functions band doing lots of corporate gigs so I guess the name probably wouldn't mean much to most of us anyway. I forgot to add mine. Currently playing for a guy called Nathan Wall who imaginitavely calls his set-up 'The Nathan Wall Band' Nothing very fancy, mostly pub gigs, a few functions and weddings too. Fairly steady if undemanding work. There's at least one other BC'er who is an ex band member. No point pointing links at facebook page, the band has no control over them as they were set up by now ex band members. Nathan is currently in process of setting up a basic 'official' non facebook web site.
23. Apart from the man himself, does anyone know who JTUK plays for? I've seen lots of posts from him about various gigs but not the name of the band and I don't think there's a link on his sig.
24. Would have looked in out of curiosity as I've still never seen them live but I'm treading the boards at some pub or other on Friday night myself.
25. Not familiar with them but from what I gather there is a CD/DVD compilation available called 'Heathenology' which sounds a sensible place to start.
