1.
They did that on the "Magnification" tour when they had the orchestra with them - it sounded pretty fantastic.
Yeah, that was the one. It was a good gig anyway but it would have made it special for me if they'd done 'Gates'. They had been playing it ealier in the tour but it was a fairly long one and by the time the UK shows came up they were dropping it on some nights and I was unlucky.
2. They did a tour which featured most of Fragile (though not done as a single 'front to back' performance) when Anderson and Wakeman were in the lineup, maybe 10 yrs back or so?. Never heard them do Gates of Delerium, they did it on a tour I saw but missed it out on the night I was there!
3.
Quite, although I would stretch it to GFTO. Tormato was the start of the slide, ending in the drivel that was Drama. I went to see them when they toured Drama and, my God, they were awful. That was it for me, bar 90125.
Even though some of it may be recycled Buggles, I rather enjoy Drama when I give it a spin. Squire's on particularly good form on that one IMHO.
4. I've not seen them with Davison but saw them twice with the last guy, Benoit David on separate tours. I think Davison has been picked up from another Yes tribute band, much like Journey did. Still worth seeing but you get the impression they are almost a tribute of themselves these days. Some of the stuff on the last tour seemed to be noticeably slower than the original versions, but then they are all getting on a bit! I might go to the Leicester gig.
5. Anyone here old enough recall seeing this on the TV? I sat there mesmerised by his technique. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-l-IukRxxs
6.
1988 was a nightmare - far too many people there for it to be safe. The crush even a way back from the front was pretty frightening, god knows what it must have been like where the two lads died. I didn't even get to see Maiden - some arsehole threw a vodka bottle at me & I ended up spending quite a long time getting my badly cut left hand patched up. I was so fed up by then I left just as Kiss were coming on & spent the rest of the day in the pub.
Me and a mate were reasonably close to the front when GnR played so we couldn't have been that far from the tragedy though we didn't see anything ourselves, we could see it was getting worse though so as more and more people moved forward we did the opposite and got further back. The crowds were so big and unruly that by the time Maiden came on we were way back close to the Dunlop bridge! We saw the whole show though, in fact iirc I've never seen Maiden play since. I don't think I saw any of the acts that were on again after that day apart from Dave Lee Roth. Edit - more photos etc from the 1988 festival here; http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/donington-1988-vftmud.html
7. If I'd played on something and my track subsequently got removed and replaced by someone else's playing I'd want that person to be credited, not me. Why should they miss out? As has been said before it happens all the time though.
8. Whatever it was, it wasn't mine. Belonged to the headline act we were supporting who kindly let us just turn up with minimal gear and blast out a set. I even travelled to the gig by bus which was probably a first for me!
9. I was there in '88 and still spare a thought for the families of those two lads that didn't live to see the end of the day's acts. RIP and stay safe to those that are gong this year. I live about 30mins drive from Donington but I'll be heading North tomorrow and stay out of the way.
10. Was it a question of deal or no deal?
11. Henley comes across as very lucid and reasonably normal but then there's a steely glint in his eyes that makes me think he's not the sort of bloke you'd want to cross. I can understand Felder's position to some degree but he didn't do himself any favours after the reunion despite clearly not being on Frey's xmas card list during the final years of his original involvement.
12.
Do they ask for double bubble?
They probably do but no one is daft enough to pay it!
13. Yep, as others have said the two are not mutually exclusive. Have a DF set and go out as a full trib but then have a more varied set for other gigs. There's a bunch of guys do the rounds where I am that go out under 2 totally different names and wear different gear doing either a 60's nostagia set or a commercial classic rock set but the band members are the same. At xmas or new year they often appear as both bands and effectively become their own support act!
14. Really makes you appreciate the effort that they put into Gabriel's Sledgehammer video
15. Another bassworld refugee here though I didn't post much, must have been there for maybe the last couple of years before it folded. I have no idea how I found the original bassworld, may have been googling for something bassy for sale secondhand. Would be interested if someone can post the dates of which site was active from when, I lose track how long I've been in here looking for the exit
16. At last Warwick have a shot at producing a half decent looking bass and then....ah well. There have been 'sliders' before though haven't there? Gibson, Dan Armstrong?
17. Rob goes beardless! Mind you with the latest allegations regarding Rolf it's probably just as well... Hope it all goes swimmingly and that a collection of irate jazz singers don't come down to scat-heckle you.
18. Better technique obviously produces a better 'sound' in relation to those things that technique can influence. Give a quality pro player a really cheap nasty horrible set up and he'll get a better 'sound' from it than someone of my ability playing through the same gear. But would he prefer to play through this cheap as chips rig or his own costing thousands? would he chuff.
19. The Squier P/J is a perfectly serviceable instrument at the low price end too, pick them up for little money on eBay. The PU's are a bit low output but as a playable instrument they are fine, had one for a year or so until I got the US deluxe. 20. I didn't even look at the ticket prices this time. He played in Nottingham a few years back and it was £50 a throw even then and I put my foot down. Saw him in Sheffield some years back and although I enjoyed it I kind of ticked him off my list of artists that I'd previously not seen but probably wouldn't be making a habit of catching every tour, same with Clapton. Mind you EC was charging £50 a ticket as far back as 2004 which seemed a lot of money at the time. Glad he's still doing it his way, a genuine maverick in an increasingly homogenised world of music. Not surprised it was a long show, there are some very long tunes on the psychedelic pill album!
21.
the original name for my first band was the Dead Presleys, some local Teds made it pretty plain there might be a bit of disruption at any future gigs unless we changed it, we did
Should have gone for the 'Rotting Cochrans', sounds more hardcore...
22.
I would contend that you are actually far more likely to have your amp fail on you than most basses , but very few non - pros have a back -up amp .
And just as well the pro's do. Went to see The Animals with Steve Cropper early this year and the bass players main amp went up in a very impressive looking haze of blue smoke. Roadie hastily sent back to the dressing room for a spare!
23. A week or two back doing a quick support slot for a mate's band. Just turned up with a bass and a tone pedal and off we went... 24.
If you want a P sound get a P. If you want a J sound get a J. A PJ is at best a compromise and at worst is the deformed spawn of Satan. Say a few prayers and be thankful you saw the light before it was too late.
There is some truth in this, though I wouldn't call mine the spawn of satan exactly. I have a US P, a US J (both passive) and a US P deluxe which is active and has P on the neck and double J on the bridge, all 3 were made less than 4 years apart from each other. Now obviously the active electronics make a big difference so it is not a genuine like for like comparison but I'd still agree that I can't get a really genuine P or J sound out of the hybrid, it has a character all of its own which I'm fine with but if I was to move on any of the 3 at the moment it would probably be the P/J. 25. They were probably getting a bit twitchy at Glasto in case they needed to find another headliner at short notice. Looks like that won't be needed, hope the lad's back in the groove asap.
