Welcome Squidman! Remember, Fender is emphatically not the only make of bass you can look at
Squier all the way!!!
... and pretty ones at that, both cat (it seems) and avatar.
where are the whiskers?

Welcome to basschat and thank you for your enquiry your custom is very much valued to us. The answer to your question is J Thank You oh btw you need a picture of a cat in your avatar its the rules apparently i heard it was something to do with Ped intending to register the domain name of basscat.co.uk but a slip of the fingers and it ended up as basschat or something like that

all of the above plus...... from your questions would i be correct in guessing you have not played on status necks? if so you might want to try one out before taking the plunge - they are mechanically and sonically extremely responsive (and without wishing to sound like im casting judgement on your playing skill and technique please dont take this the wrong way) they can be very unforgiving/illuminating!! edit - to specifically answer the OP
the fretboard looks plastic is it ? does it feel ok to play on ? does the back of the neck get sticky ? and what difference in the sound ? and are they easy to fit ?
phenolic - imagine hard lacquered ebony - mine had not so much a grain effect more a mottled colouration which was quite pleasing to the eye - beautiful feel to play - the back of the neck is very hard gloss finish - think harder than a superhard maple neck with ultra hard lacquer no - only your hands might get sticky bright with extra added brightness - very consistent powerful tones and no dead spots yes very easy - just send it over to the status factory
I use dunlop nylon black 1mm picks, nice grippy bit on them
ive tried playing with a pick recently and just cant seem to manage it anymore however from my skinny neck cheese wire strumming days i thoroughly concur with everybody before me selecting 1mm black dunlops

Bass player by choice, or relegated guitarist?
steve-bbb replied to Tuono's topic in General Discussion
Ditto. Whenever I pick up a guitar (which is normally only to move it out of my way at a gig) I have no idea what to do with it. They are too small, cramped and with closely spaced cheese-wire running from nut to bridge.
exactly this they make good fire wood i understand! -
our gig went fine tonight to be honest i was totally distracted (food again) we were playing in a gastro pub out in a kent village and the menu card was the first distraction but even whilst setting up i was completely and utterly distracted by the venison spitroast out in the front garden guitarists can be useful it turns out - one of ours (we have two) had pigged out at macdees on the way and so he gave his own freebie ticket for the roast to me its only fair because we were playing in an area the size of a shoebox (drums kybds 2 guitars bass and vocalisit a space about 4m x 3m' !) i even allowed said guitairist to stack his deluxe line6 combo on top of the hallowed hydrive cab all future pub gigs WILL be accompanied by a rider that a venison spitroast must be included in the evenings entertainments (wild boar hog roast will be an acceptable substitute) anybody in west kent area - THE PLOUGH in IVY HATCH is thoroughly recommended

hi thanks yes that is all there too and made sure it was connected well when swapped the bridge over i was thinking of copper foiling the cavities out to see if the hum lessens a bit - its not too bad with both pickups on but on the rare occasions when i want bridge only there is a fair bit of hum - im guessing also any copper foil lining the cavities also needs to be connected to the ground??

ok dumb elec noob question here ive just unscrewed the cover of my J to see if any loose wires as ive had my amp checked over and it seems ok so i thought maybe an earth problem with the instrument i only see one wire connection to the jack is the earth connected via the casing of the three volume and tone pots connecting to the chrome plate? i can see all the black wires going to the pots from the pups and the bridge but no black from any one of them the the jack thanks
Sigh The trouble is they have too much invested in their Marshall stacks both emotionally and financially to change easily. They've dreamed since they were little boys about standing in front of these things with their guitars singing and this is living the dream.
yes very much this and how VERY DARE YOU even contemplate sullying their beautiful luxurious tones with your woolly old bass

Just arrange for some female fans to approach them after gig and tell them it's ok and size doesn't really matter etc
