I'm happy to play the difficult stuff easier if I can ..eg Who stuff where I'll not be able to play like the Ox after 9 months obviously.
as your own skills improve you might be pleasantly surprised to find that the Ox stuff isnt as difficult to play as you might at first think (stands back and dodges the flying bottles and heavy glass ashtrays from the ox fanboys)
Incredible output really, although I do wonder how much of case of quantity over quality it is. Some of his work is just beautiful, the melodic stuff on side one of Lumpy Gravy for instance, but he could certainly get a bit self indulgent. Can't complain though, considering all the good stuff he made.
but even the self indulgent stuff was usually done tongue in cheek and often at some point he would place the most stunning section from nowhere straight into the middle of one of the satire songs - outro to yo mama and outro of jesus thinks youre a jerk for example -

what is this finger stretching everyone is talking of? you are allowed to moved your whole hand at the same time as wiggling your fingers dontchaknow i have a 35 (bright active and modern) and a 34 (nice soft passive dull thump) and use them more according to the sonic needs of the song rather than any personal preference (except when my back is really aching then i'll just dump the big beast in favour of the lighter one) in response to the OP imho the main difference is really in the immediate feel and response of how they play string tension general wobbliness of strings etc etc and depending on your playing style and repertoire some things might 'feel' easier to negotiate on a 34 compared to a 35 - i do tend to practice a bit more on the 35 than the 34 for that reason - if you can nail something fiddly on the 35 it does make it feel a bit easier when you try it on the 34 edit- taking it to the extreme... i dug my old 6 string acoustic out of the cupboard a little while back and found it difficult to the point of appearing like a fumbling noobie trying to finger even the most basic chord shapes on its teenie weenie 24 inch scale and puny thin strings
....their necks probably wouldn't be anywhere near as a good as a Sandberg or a Lakland. I've had my mitts on most of the classic range of rock n roll basses - I'm not meaning some of the high high end stuff I could never afford - but 'Rays, Fender jazz and P's, Ibanez, Yamaha, Gibsons, and so on, and I think Sandberg and Lakland beat them all hands down for sheer class, comfort and construction. The 'Bergs in particular are amazing and I think very underrated. Thus ends the Sunday sermon.
err you forgot STATUS

is fine by me means that when decent bands need a good experienced bass player there is more chance of them coming looking for miserable old gits like me
-
you could try it but there is a health and safety warning... tuning the low end B down three semitones it might just flap about enough to recoil and slap you in the face
You're right. No one notices the bass player, until he's not there. Getting yourself noticed as a bassplayer is either standing up front doing slapfest
yes and no - i disagree re the slapfest - i just play whats needed and rely on the fact that those who will be impressed with real simple accurate spot on groove playing are the ones i want to impress with a view to more potential work/gigs - as for the rest ... if theyre impressed its a bonus ... if not ... its their loss and i couldnt give a toss frankly
Hmm.. Nah! I like the TRB 6 with humbuckers. P/J for me should be stuck on a passive Fender.
well the bridge pup on any trb has usually got more growl than a big growly thing -
I got into them in 1975 when Physical Graffiti came out and then sought out the previous albums and became a huge fan. By the the time I saw them at Knebworth in 1979 I was pretty much over all that (oh, fickle teenager) and dug Todd Rundgren's set a lot more than Zep's. These days, I think that all the albums through to Physical Graffiti (with the possible exclusion of Houses of the Holy) stand up very well and the 2003 DVD release made amends for the shortcomings of The Song Remains The Same.
+1 i was there in 79 too - page was without a doubt the most sloppy live performance ive ever seen (possibly something to do witt he fact that he had a giant rizla hanging out the side of his gob for the entire set) - bonham and jpj on the other hand ... in 33 years since then ive still yet to see a drummer and bass player outperform them +1 also regarding todd rundgren - in hindsight he really should have been the headline act would be curious to see LZ now and see how different they would be with jp sober - the o2 dome gig from what ive seen of it looked a way better live show than knebworth

not only is the slapping great but he's flapping his legs about like a good un and those stockings are actually staying up with no suspenders
