What do you ask when advertising for a vocalist?
steve-bbb replied to xgsjx's topic in General Discussion
Ask for some evidence of their ability via youtube clips, soundcloud, mp3s etc. And ask what their previous experience in other bands is. No demo = no audition.
ask other local muso friends - you may be lucky enough to find a noob who has no previous experience/exposure of music scene (therefore no demo clips) but has a good voice and pitch etc etc and said muso friends might recommend them to you as worth offering an audition -
often it's the simplest parts that are the most fun
my previous function band we use to do mavericks dance the night away - this is a good example of this - very simple line but a moderate challenge to play it fluidly and once the crowd are up shaking their booty on the dance floor you cannot help get caught up in the enjoyment of the whole thing
Shock news!!! Most punters don't give a f*** what the bassist is doing!!
thats because their ears are being assaulted by the cheesewire strummers
Is this the Robbie Williams one ? im a bit old and dont get out much these days but is this some new(?) fad of posting up things for a laugh on ebay ?? there is a shedload on facespace at the moment about people taking pics of their product and 'accidentally' capturing themselves in the nip on the same photo and 'accidentally' posting it up on the ebay sale page

and ... just because you think its boring , the rest of your band and all the punters in the audience might like it!!! theres not accoungting for taste dontchaknow i think i may be on the verge of persuading our band to cover N.O. Regret - its a great tune and goes down well and many a basschatter would argue the merits of it's iconic bassline BUT .... imho the bassline is a bit pedestrian and boring to play BUT i like the song so much as a whole it overrides everything i think about it being boring and i actually enjoying playing it at the same time as finding it boring NURSE ... the screens....
May I suggest you try to enjoy the whole song and appreciate the part you play in it, rather than doing what too many people do and only focus on yourself? The clue is that you hadn't even realised how simple the bass line is, THAT my friend is REAL music. You've been tricked by movement and harmony. I very much doubt that you are playing the part well enough to get your mojo on, so concentrate on nuanced playing and how you fit in the song. Just because you don't have 16th note triplet arpeggios to play does not mean the bass line is simple or unmusical. So many of us are trying to learn stuff that means nothing on the bass unless it's in a virtuoso context. There is far too much emphasis on chops and f*** all on MUSIC. If you can truly learn to love simplicity, you will be a much better and more useful musician for it.
yes definitely this we have a few P!nk things (ooer missus) in our set and Get This Party Started is one of them It only has two notes all the way through - B natural and F sharp it makes a nice change to switch totally on to auto pilot and listen to the whole thing going on as opposed to the trickier numbers where you need to focus and concentrate on your own part more and that in itself can help create a bit more dynamic to the set as a whole imho
I'd have thought that bassists should have an advantage when it comes to being heard because they've almost got their very own sonic space to work within. Yes, a kick drum will overlap our main frequency region, but singers won't and nor will guitarists usually.
except when you have a keyboard player who insists on doubling the bass line

I don't have "a sound". Is something wrong with me?
steve-bbb replied to thepurpleblob's topic in General Discussion
I read a lot of threads on here and there's a lot of chat about finding "your sound". I don't have one. Am I ok? I turn up at a gig, set everything in sight flat. I have a listen. If there are any odd resonances or other oddness in the room I try to dial it out then off to get a diet coke. That's it. I'm weird aren't I
not at all i do pretty much the same but with full fat coke -
Getting to the point of applying the finish to my scratch built bass. I'm using water based satin laquer for the body and neck but am not sure what to use on the wenge fretboard to give a nice finish. Any suggestions for a nice natural finish? Cheers Jez
Hi Jez just found this thread - is this using the slab of elm by any chance?

What Have You Picked Up From The Pros?
steve-bbb replied to Pete Academy's topic in General Discussion
i used to be guilty of this in my mispent youth - first it used to be emulating the crunch of chris squire and geddy lee - then later when i got into jazz and fusion stuff it was the tone and licks of victor bailey in his weather report days then i stopped playing bass for about 15 years and only took it up again last year and i dropped all those previous lazy habits now i just play straight down the line - if there is any style developing these days i havent a clue who it sounds like codger stylee perhaps -
yay for the squier J

You don't realise how loud you are until..............
steve-bbb replied to barneyg42's topic in General Discussion
i need to do this too - i only have a 250w hartke head but it is ample for average pubs and clubs - at a gig last summer i had the 410 and the 115 hooked up to it thinking i would need the extra oomph - standing on top of it you can only just hear it - friends over the far side of the pub told me it was shaking the windows and everything -
i got a blockage once and nipped down to our company medical centre to get ear syringed and a chunk of orangey brown wax about size of a large pea came out

why overdrive - why not try an octave pedal and mix in a small amount of lower octave to give the tone a bit more beef
