personally i rather like his stuff - his solo album stuff is ok and his jazz big band arrangements are great but for me personally the Joni Mitchell and Weather Report stuff is imho the best of the Jaco catalogue and i would suggest that this was down to the chemistry between the individuals in those groups ( and PM's Bright Size Life too) In the JM band he was playing alongside Pat Metheny and Milke Brecker and backing the lyrics or arguably one of the finest songwriters in modern music. In Weather Report he was playing alongside the immense playing and compositional skills of Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter. Yet in both line-ups he manages to consistently produce bass lines which are so indescribably unique but they never seem to compete with the tune but always enhance it which is a major factor in why both of these bands the sum of the individual parts was far greater than the whole. It has already been mentioned on another Jaco thread several months ago and worth searching but check out the video interview of Joni Mitchell describing Jaco and his contribution to her music
No I wasn't. Ask a cross section of joe public to name a bass player and I'm pretty sure he'd be way down the list after, for example, Paul McCartney, Sting, Phil Linnot, Chris Wolstenholme, and probably after John Entwhistle as well. Most people have never heard of him.
no mark king??? FTW
Oh god, I'd forgotten about those whinging dullards...which kind of proves JTUK's point!
But to be fair Keane are good in that they make Coldsore sound interesting
Went to see Retox last night at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club. They were good (hardcore screamers playing at breakneck speed) but the 2 supports were pretty unusual. First Cattle - a bassist, 2 drummers and a singer. The bass was distorted as hell but sounded immense. Reeling from that, the next up were Zeus - 2 piece Italian bassist and drummer. Again, all sorts of effects and distortions but strangely compelling. Really tight and bloody loud. Who needs a guitarist eh?
\ not knowing much about what is exactly yhe best bass for metal and all that.... i do observe from all the threads i read here that metallurgists do seem to be very fond of this downtuning malarky does this herald the way for some not too distant utopia where all guitars will have big chunky strings and long scale lengths?

i do admire your optimism with your OP but alas i fear you would have better chance of an answer by asking what is the best bass metal to convert to gold
That stuff seems almost too good to be true. Makes you wonder why it is not more widely known.
delightful Leave it to Jimmy Johnson to come up with a magic potion for cleaning the skank off my basses. I'm one of those guys who sweats through at least four bass changes a night. I also insist on new strings nightly but you can imagine what's left underneath...... a ton of gunk on the frets. Every few songs I need a new horse. Now I play frets that are as smooth as an Orangutan's butt. sounds like regular micromesh cloth and snake oil to me ???
Ultimately we're all looking at this from a bass player's perspective. Ask any singer/songwriter about it and they will wax lyrical about Joni's brilliance, with maybe a nod towards the sax; I wouldn't expect them to even really notice the bass player, no matter who it was. It is our lot to appreciate/critique each other and for others not to notice/care about us, but it is our choice of instrument and we knew about the "Who's that body at the back with the big guitar?" going in. Big up to whoever got the JM gig, she's not exactly known for her inability to choose jaw dropping musos
who else has had the likes of jaco and pat metheny and michael brecker as their backing band? - few band leaders other than JM and zappa could assemble this sort of line up and as you say to get chosen would be just about the pinnacle of any musos career imo ergo ... PP is one of the chosen few -
I just had the feeling that nothing "happened".. the song had my attention in the beginning but then it dropped. Not that I expect frantic bass-lines but I missed a bit of personality.. especially on fretless Pino has loads of that but I wasn't carried away by this. He copies some lines from Jaco but didn't add a lot of his own..
does something 'have' to happen - this song is all about the lyrics and the ethereal feel created by JM's strumming and open tuning - the clarinet and bass (nice as it is) is just the icing on the cake i think PP is great on this even if you do draw comparisons with JP - and as ezbass said above what bassist in their right mind would be brave or stupid enough to even want to attempt this -
they both must be good im not hearing any complaints about volume
When I saw that for the first time I wasn't floored and I'm still not convinced... Pino does some nice interventions but throughout the whole song he plays it rather safely and seems to be intimidated by the "weight" of the original bass-part. Not that I expect him to be Jaco but at least Pastorius made a statement and Pino doesn't succeed in making this iconic piece his own. He's one of my favourite bass players but I missed something in this version..
i disagree as much as i like jaco he hardly ever played it the same twice and the only ones most of us are familiar with are the original studio and the shadows and light version - its not like PP had to copy the studio version note for note - importantly it maintains the structure and the feel perfectly and adds to the song without making the overt statement that jacos lines often did - the lyrics and JM's delivery and wayne shorters soloing are more than enough to make it a great song even disregarding the bass line -
No no, I'm not being asked to do this. I'm just curious as to why someone might say, sell a jazz 4 string because his band says he needs a 5 string. Or maybe someone is joing a tour and is told he needs to play a 5 or 6 string. My situation is fine. Why would someone other than the bass player tell him what to play? Is that clearer?
is this person writing songs where loads of sub E notes are being used frequently? if the compositions are sounds and musically they 'work' then a 5 or an octave pedal on a 4 would be suitable why am i getting vibes of metal and downtuning? is the low E to B thing just being used as a compositional gimmick or does it actually add value to the harmonic structure? personally i think the whole low tuning things is more for effect than harmonic substance - in a heavy or busy arrangement most punters cant actually discern the pitch correctly much below low D and the main important reason for playing the correct note is imho mainly to avoid unwanted dissonance
