1.
Hi folks, I'm a novice bassist who happens to be without a bass guitar but have the will (and some cash) to buy one, so I'm here to ask for your recommendations. I mostly like to play metal, mainly 80ies stuff, maiden, judas priest, ozzy etc. My budget is at most 1000£ (don't have to spend it till the last penny I checked the Fender Steve Harris Precision Bass and Fender American Deluxe P Bass but I couldn't made up my mind yet, so I'm asking your opinion, what do you recommend? Thanks in advance
Welcome and lets see if we can help..... 1st off there's some good comments above....... all valid..... Buut my opininon FWIW.... Get something like this - http://www.thomann.de/gb/roland_cube_100_bass.htm http://www.thomann.de/gb/ampeg_ba115hp_basscombo.htm Then at least you can turn up and play with your mates and keep up (no they are not top end rigs but they will get you going and will just keep up with a drum kit) plus these are OK for practising. 2nd off that leaves you about £600 for the bass - dont go mad with your first one as its quite unlikely that this will be the bass that you are known for and 'does your thing' but it will be a good step.... Aim for something along these lines.... http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_highway_one_pbass_rw_fb.htm http://www.thomann.de/gb/fender_highway_one_jbass_rw_fb.htm The secret here is that you really need to try both a P and J to work out what kind of neck you prefer to play, there REALLY is a difference although it seems such a small amount on spec sheets you will end up preferring one over the other. Sure some folks say that you can play a narrower neck quicker but that depends on your hands. I have big hands and really dont like narrow necks but even that is hit and miss as advice. I'm suggesting those bits above as they will retain a good portion of thier value and be very sellable if you dont wish to keep them. The other really sensible thing to do is to look at the for sale threads on here as that is where you can get some really good stuff way cheaper than new - however bear in mind, there will be a lot of stuff on there that may just confuse you!
2. There is something definately a bit fishy about these scales.......
3. DAMN unt blast.... If that neck had been 4mm wider at the nut I'dve had that to fill in until HG Thor defret one of my PRSs.... That is so PRS like without actually being one - its very very very nice!
4. If I hadnt just upgraded my Mini I'd had this off you like a flash - However now I'm running with the dual core processor...... WOW....
5. Whilst I'm sure its beatifully made and great quality and probably even good VFM, I'm afraid I dont find it appealling in the same way I dont Ritters.....
6. V.nice but it should be in porn section....
7.
thanks for the advice v helpful
You're welcome.
8. You are in more danger of the lead wearing the finish away than you are of it reacting with the nitro.... Gig it hard, get a few dinks in and you wont worry a jot about your lead......
9. Thread has been editted due to a complaint - Please keep it about basses in here.... Off topics should stay there.
10. Rob, has that neck been epoxied....? Bob.
11. Sadly they are bit like 2ndhand Porsche's..... Theres cheap ones and there are good ones, but there are no cheap good ones.... try 2ndhand on the 'bay or new cheap ones off there.....
12. I use one on my Hack PRS and it does what its say on the tin. You can either set the E string slightly flat and it will pop into D and back, or set it spot on in E and it will go to D but require a nudge to go back to E when you go back up. Its no biggy really once you are used to it. Its a small thing to do for the comfort of playing the same bass. Use a larger guage of string to get the best out of the Low D, I went from 100 to 105 and it sounds like Gods throat rumbling now.....
13.
Is it not like "Trigger's Broom" then? All that's original is the body... And consider this; Manufacturer "X" gets his bridges, Tuners, Nuts, etc.etc. far cheaper than you can @ retail prices. They can make a whole bass for less than you can buy the bits! Unless you have a serious sentimental attachment to a given bit of timber, it probably isn't worth it. Whatever the results.
Alex, I can see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure I can agree with you there..... As always it depends upon what you start with and how much you spend...... No one on here denied my H1 P bass wasn't worth doing, and it lit Voxpop's fuse when he initially liberated it from me. Even something as simple and inexpensive as a Squier or Mex Fender can be made into a quality playing instrument IF the wood bits are really good to start with and some of them are that good!
14. Porn.......
15. Oooooeeeew big subject that one... Fors:- 1. you will have a bass everyone wil instantly recognise (not just other bass players) 2. if its reliced you wont have to worry about getting the odd dink 3. any sound tech will know how to approach it 4. you will blend in (visually) with any band 5. if the tone isnt up to what you want is mega easy pimping them Againsts:- 1. you may not like it as much as your Sadowskys 2. other bassplayers will just look at is as a reliced J.... (is that a bad thing..? I dont know...!) 3. some bands may look down their noses at you because you dont play a Fender 4. sound techs may raise thier eyebrows at you when you get a Sadowsky out the bag.... 5. tonally the std J bass may not be a flexible as your Sad. but see 5 above. As to advice to which one to get, my advice would be just dont jump at the first one you see, as there are loads around and some are f***in' amazin', some are very average, and it doesn't matter where they are made, what year they are, or how much they cost - that applies to all of them.
16.
Am I the only one who thinks it looks utterly hideous?
Wayne, its clearly an '80's hairspray rock' thing..... I haven't seen one Gibson I'd consider buying until this one.... Dont get me wrong they are VERY capable basses but just never floated my boat..... But then I have a huge soft spot for Fender HM basses, so what do I know....
17. Oh bugger, thats nice. Schaller bridge and tuners too.....
18. I've settled out on on D'add chromes and GHS.... Tried most of the others they suit me best.
19.
I am looking to maybe oflfoad my 78 jazz and get a more versitile bass.
Are you looking for more varied or versatile sound, or are you just bored.....? If you wanna have more adapatabilty but otherwis the 78 J is your thing, get a decent pre-amp, pups and bridge and keep the same J. Who's to say just because it cost £1k that it will make the sound your after? You will be gobsmacked how much pimping gear you could get for that grand......? Maybe even a rig update as well as bass pimping..... Just my contribution FWIW....
20.
Thanks for the advice, that RBX 260 is quite tempting... Another question (if you don't mind!): Would it be worth getting the RBX260 or something similar and then upgrading in a few months time or going straight for the BB414 for a little more cash? Again, any input is appreciated!
Sensible reply alert.......! Bhav, at the price rance your looking at its a matter of image and style. All Yams can be set up play very well (my first bass was a budget Yam...... ) and after about 6 months I got the pimping bug. It was easy to set up, played well, sounded great (with new pups) and was dead easy to upgrade..... The differing Yam models have quite closely related neck diemensions, but the BB have 4 aside a tuners and the RBX series have 2 a side tuners..... If you can live with either then play a few until you find one you cant put down, and buy it..... If its gotta look like a fender then it can only be the BB...... Enjoy....
21. You know what.....? I say a big up to the fella that made that.... No its not to everyones taste, Yes it may look odd to some, But I think the chap (or chapess) that went to that much trouble to create it got exactly what they wanted.... I bet they love playing it too.... I just wish they'd put a bit more thought into wher ethey took teh pic.... Oh and why P-rick when there could have been SOooooooo many different anagrams of Rickenbacker and Fender Precision bass.... Come on folks, open season (but try to keep it fairly clean... ) I'll start...... Rickender, Ricks ion ass Frickinbacker Ferskinbender.....
22. Width of the neck at the nut please...? (and string spacing at that end of the neck ) seems like a bit of a bargin to mee!
23. G'day mate.... Herbie's J is a bit of a relic..... but boy can he play it....! BTW 'should have Roto nylons on it!
24.
Nice one... they're beautiful things.
+ the 1 from me.... mine certainly is!
