Found it
Ah, it says the video is private. Thanks though man!
Yup, I agree with that too. I can get some really nice fat distortion tones with the B3 by using more than one 'slot' - that wouldn't be a problem if Zoom release an update for the B3 so we can have six effects at once, like our skinny stringed bretherin's G3!! I'm holding out for the MS-50B should it ever materialise - there's pre-release pics of it all over the net, so hopefully it will appear. 6 effects at once in a single pedal sized casing.. If it has a dry blend like the B3 i will be very very happy!
I'm sure it took about a year for 6 effects to be released for the G3... I'm crossing my fingers that they announce a "B3X" at NAMM along with a firmware update for the B3 soon after! I saw the Bluetoothy MS50 thing advertised as 'released today in the UK', so the MS50B might be coming soon!
Agree..very clean string but not ultra zingey...so therefore they seem to last quite a while. Normally I am changing DR's every 3 and a bit weeks... but Newtones last far longer for me.
I have had a custom stainless steel set on my 6 string for about 2 years They're dead now, but I only noticed a significant change in sound after a few months!
Hi This is the latest layout in my pedalboard:
That's no board, that's a tablet! Love it, great selection of pedals

It sounds like you are into the bright sound of stainless steels, like me These would be my suggestions: Elites - Very affordable, great sound, nowhere near as rough on the hands as rotosounds, but don't last much longer before the brightness wears off. Newtones - Really nice and smooth on the hands, fairly long lasting, high quality handmade strings. D'Addario Prosteels - Affordable, 'snappier' tone than Elites or Rotos with a more controlled low end, and last a bit longer. Rough on the hands, but after a while playing they do smooth over. If money is tight these are the ones I would always go for. Elixir Stainless Steel - The best of the bunch in all honesty. They have the bright tone that I crave (I've even rolled down the tone on a few gigs!), and the coating ensures that it stays for a long time! I've done a fair few sweaty gigs and they've shown no sign of letting up. And best of all, the coating makes the strings feel smooth, and your hands glide over them with ease. No need to use string cleaners like fast fret either! In my humble opinion they are well worth paying over £30 for. Hope that helps!
Ha ha ha! Well, it's hard to explain really! It's also down to the type of distortion too. The drive I go for in this particular case is a really fine distortion, more akin to that of the rasp of bowing a cello than adding aggression. Lots of sustain and very smooth. It takes a bit of sculpting with my gear - and I wanna find a way of doing it with just a single pedal - but amazingly, my options had been turned down by a few builders!
Reading all that has really made me want to hear it! Have you got any samples? Or examples of other bass players who have a similar thing going on?
-
No, sorry, I was referring to the Zoom B3. Since you and Dood own the B3, I was wondering if the B3 was capable to get near the sound of the modded ODB3.
Ahh my bad I haven't fiddled around with the drive settings all that much on it to be honest, as I wasn't too impressed with them. I imagine there will be some good possibilities if you mixed one of them with an EQ, since they have a clean blend, but that would take up two slots.

To be fair it did derail WELL quicker than usual. Perhaps that's a sign that we need more ladies in the community! Read that in the least "I've been single for like 3 months please kill me now" way possible
-
Sorry But what did you expect? On topic, the majority of female bass players I've seen have always played Fenders or Ibanez basses. Didn't think to ask why though!

Bass tone - Mostly the player isn't it?
It's these subtleties and your phrasing that make the music
True.
they won't change from one instrument to another.
Not necessarily true however. The basses that I play respond very well to my style of playing, whereas I have played on basses worth 10x as much where no matter how I played or where I set the knobs I didn't sound the way I wanted to. I couldn't possibly knock the equipment as it sounds phenomenal in other peoples hands. To me, it's not about having the 'best' gear, it's about having the gear that compliments what you do. This is proably why there are hundreds of instrument manufacturers who all have their fans, rather than just everybody playing a Fender Precision and saying it's the only bass worth having. Very interesting topic this -
Those of you who play in covers bands on the pub scene help!

I usually do a 1 hour set followed by a 90 minute set (including encores if they're wanted). Have done 3 hours of music in one night some nights though! I'm using an 8 ohm 4x10 and i've never been left needing more volume... I'd still like a taller stack for some venues where the stage area is so small that you're standing right in front of your amp, and the sound travels right past your knees! Can't say I know much about using heavy basses on long gigs though! I guess try it out and see, and take a spare just in case you feel yourself getting fatigued -
Now that's true metal! Nice to see a Markbass head in use there

Christ... Women are getting their own threads and everything nowadays... They'll be wanting to vote next!

Is no band better than just any old band?
chrismuzz replied to 4-string-thing's topic in General Discussion
Depends of if you like music or not.
Haha, all these detailed responses when we could have just said this -
the Darkglass B3/B7 is the closest in a single pedal to do that, but lacks the amount of drive I need sometimes.
Just how distorted do you go?
-
I'm in a 5 piece metal cover band, and we've been paid anything from £50 to £400 for around 2 - 3 hours of music. If we're not offered a fee then we usually ask for at least £200, but then we do it for fun so anything's cool
Personally, I would rather be in any band than no band... I just love to play with other musicians, and to play live It's a good way of getting your face out there too, as when I was regularly gigging with Malacite I was constantly being approached by other bands looking for a bass player.
Come to think of it, I was only approached about joining my current cover band because the drummer remembered me from a band i was in about 3 years ago! I only joined because I was desperate to get out there and play again, I didn't think it was going to be anything amazing... But boy was I mistaken! -
I also love the Karnivool bassist's tone too and as I understand it he used an ODB-3 stock and a Tech 21 XXL pedal. - Yes, I'd love the B7k, but should I pull my finger out, I kinda like the fun that a bit of modding may bring - especially if it turns out a killer tone. I *think* the ODB-3 will sound like it has more gain when modded. Though I can't say for certain.
I've got to say, the modded ODB-3 did sound amazing in those clips! I think what I want to do is try going "Comp > Sansamp > B3k" ... I have a sneaking suspicion that part of the magic of the B3k is in the mids though so depending on the results I might have to reconsider the Sansamp!
Nice mod. But wouldn't the B3 be capable to sound like this?
If you mean the Darkglass B3K, then yes definitely! I know which would be cheaper though Saying that, I'd personally prefer the B3K!
You may have understood. Lifetime guarantees are for the life of the product. When it breaks, that's the end of its life . . . . and the guarantee.
If I saw that in the small print I'd find it so hilariously cheeky that I'd let it go

This is mildly on-topic... But my band was recently supported by a metal outfit with 1 bass, 1 guitar, drums and 1 vocalist. The bassist used an Ibanez SR505 through my Markbass rig... The only pedal he used was a Boss ODB-3. No mods. I can honestly say he had one of the best live bass sounds I've ever heard! It sat in the mix perfectly and sounded really natural and organic!
-
I started properly using effects about 2 and a half years ago, then a few months later I was looking for information on how to get a decent valvey grind, and I stumbled across Basschat! Now I don't think I could do a gig without my pedalboard!
-
The amount of features you get on that thing is incredible! i'd never find a use for BOTH fx loops so might be a bit overkill for me but I would love to see just what it's capable of! I'm sure you'll enjoy it

I bought a set of the stainless ones recently and yeah, they're amazing! I don't think I'll ever buy another brand now. They do need greater variety in the gauges though, especially the steels which are severely limited.
