Pedal power

I like the diago power station with a daisy chain cable, then for any dodgy digital pedals getting one of those isolator adaptors. I get a fairly minimal amount of noise even when using stupid amounts of compression and stacking 2-3 drive pedals
2. Basically all the major modes, then depending on if you want to mess about a bit, harmonic/melodic major/minor, and experimenting with adding random notes here and there to watch the guitarist wince
3. Welcome! Straight jackets are hanging up to your left, next to the tea and coffee making facilities. BYOB(iscuits)
4. You could easily get away with going DI as usual, then plugging into your combo and putting it on stage at ear level, if you didn't want to spend more money
5. Bargain! I got mine without the box for £110 I think. It's worth that for the tuner and compressors alone!
6. I've got 3 basses where you can string wither through the body or bridge only, it definitely makes a difference to the compliance of the strings, so they 'feel' tighter. I can't say for certain if it affects tone or sustain, bit I imagine it would have a positive (if negligible) effect since the string doesn't rattle around as much. You could probably get away with a lighter gauge and/or lower action this way with less fret Buzz.
7.
Do you need a two octave bass ? I have always felt that shorter basses have more growl on the bottom frets where you need it.
I've heard this too, but I've got a couple of 35" scale basses with mega growly B strings
8. Hairspray and spandex tights. Oh, and an xlr cable might not hurt.
9. PJ configuration is awesome, but I do love humbuckers... It's weird that there aren't more basses with this setup!
10.
Thing about the Lomenzo video you've linked to there is that he's running an Aphex Exciter pedal, Aphex Compressor pedal and it's all run in to an Ashdown pre amp so it's very hard to get that sound from it. I know you'll think i'm stupid for saying this but I just got given a Boss SD-1 (yes, the guitar pedal) for christmas by a friend and it's what i've been searching for for years tonally. It adds a nice crackle to the string sound and doesn't make your bass sound fuzzy. You can pick them up for around £20 too! I've got one for my bass board and one for my guitar board. That's my recommendation any way. It's worth checking it out, especially to get that sort of tone you linked in the first video.
I love the Marshall jackhammer on bass and that's a guitar pedal!
11. Interested... Are they nickel or stainless steel?
12.
So once again thanks to everyone for the advice and recommendations! For the time being I've gone for a BDI21 (I was sold by the DI functionality) which should be arriving either Monday or Tuesday! Thanks again.
Excellent choice! First pedal with any sort of drive function I actually liked was the sansamp which is pretty much exactly what the BDI21 is! You can't go too crazy on the drive because it's more of an amp sim than a distortion... Try pairing it with a lomenzo hyperdrive, you can pick them up for about £50 on here. Seriously offensive sounds to be made!
13. Diago pedalboards rock, proper solid construction!!
14.
The cover you did of man in the bos sounds ace? Did you use the combo of pedals on that?
Yep! That BC Relay Baton had a bloody good tone didn't it?
15.
Or buy a better amp
Haha! Yes but why do things properly? That's not fun!! To be fair though I don't think I'd get such a cutting sound if I didn't play through markbass amps. My weird combination of budget passive basses, lots of pedals and yellow amps gives me a result I'm more than happy with.... ...until GAS strikes again!!
16.
chrismuzz, which do you prefer with the sansamp?
The difference isn't going to be noticeable to non bass players but I prefer the b3k definitely. It's less noisy, less artificial sounding / metallic but still sounds evil! But I prefer alll three together... If you're gonna fork out for a b3k and sansamp you might as well get the lomenzo as well I posted some bedroom bass covers on here a year ago using sansamp/lomenzo/Marshall jackhammer, and that's nowhere near how good those pedals COULD sound together so that might give you a fair idea. Please note I cut a lot of lows for my bass tone so if you think it's lacking in that area, it doesn't have to be!
17. I love the combination of sansamp + b3k, or sansamp + hyperdrive. I've used all 3 together as well and it sounds ridiculous, like hitting a chainsaw with a sledgehammer. Love it!!
18. I'd buy a Peavey T40 cause I've wanted one forever!
19. Don't forget those true temperament frets!
20.
There's a way of doing that... http://ashbass.com/AshBassGuitar/Zoom/
Yeah I saw that before, looks like a great mod! Though what I meant was the ability to go from, for example, A1 to C3 by just touching one switch rather than cycling through. I realise I'm expecting far too much for a £140 pedal though!
21.
(i like the sound of the string hitting the neck a bit)
Mmm me too Should get on very well then. Enjoy!!
22. As above, personal preference is king! I used to put the tuner first so it gets the cleanest signal for better tracking... But I now have a Zoom B3 at the end of my chain, after 4 drive pedals and it still tracks beautifully! So it's probably best to have the tuner last, so any noisy pedals are silenced. So nowadays I think I'd go comp > chorus > tuner.
23.
sadly doesnt string through the body has a good quality bridge so will see if i need to grab a 135 no biggy andy
To be fair the 130 might be perfect for you, and different branded strings have a different feel anyway... I just replaced some D'Addario nickels with Warwick EMPs. The .130 feels a little looser on the new ones, and .005 lfighter gauges on the top 3 strings makes a world of difference. I thought the D'Addarios were a little too heavy but I might have gone too far the other way now
24.
if it had an additional fx loop for other pedals, it would be pure win.
Yep! The one thing I really want would be a footswitch so you can easily select a specific patch on the fly.
25. I watched some of that. Such a shame that nobody ever got to experience the real live show, would have been a night to remember! And yeah, Alex Al is incredible. Loved the way he played Beat It. I'm glad his bass was so prominent in the mix
